New athletic director Lynn Swann is supposed to be a good businessman. Well, he is good at sitting on boards at least. But when Swann takes over in July, he can deal with UCLA signing what is believed to be the biggest apparel deal in college history with Under Armour ($280 million, 15 years). Because USC is a private school, its deal with Nike is not public. But it’s not considered to be one of the best deals and Michigan reportedly has a better deal with Nike. Phil Knight’s been chummy with USC for years (John McKay was on the Nike board) but this is an area where USC is lagging. Maybe that chummy relationship has hurt USC’s apparel deal.
