John Wayne Turns 100 . . . 109

WAYNE

Today is John Wayne’s 100th birthday. I like this picture, where he received an honorary degree from USC at the 1968 graduation ceremony. The commencement address was delivered by Rev. Theodore Hesburgh (left), who served for 35 years as president at the University of Notre Dame.

UPDATED: In my haste, I read the date wrong. Today is Wayne’s 109th birthday.

    • Searchers, Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Quiet Man, Sands of Iwa Jima, Red River, True Grit, Stage Coach, The Shootist, Green Berets, The Alamo, Greatest Story Ever Told, Sons of Katy Elder, Chisom and The Longest Day. I am sure I am missing about another 100 awesome films.
      God Bless John Wayne.

      • I give props to Wayne for the “Man who shot Liberty Valance.” It’s is the best acting he ever did and the best movie he made.

It’s funny and a true story, John Ford, the director, James Stewart, and Lee Marvin were bona fide WW II vets that participated in heavy combat action.

Ford rode Wayne relentlessly during the LV shoot for avoiding WW II duty. According to Marvin, Wayne took it w/o argument, but it was best to stay away from Wayne after one of Ford’s tirades on Wayne’s decision to sit out the war in So. California.

Wayne was protecting the SoCa lifestyle during the war.

        • Woody Strouthets who played Pompei, went to ucla. He was good. Strouthets was in absolute great shape. Check out the Wuiet Man. It is a little lighter but a great movie especially the fight scene

          • Gee no kidding. That’s the reason Wayne didn’t beat Ford senseless. WS was always around when Ford did a number on Wayne.

          • Strouthets was in Sparticus, and another cowboy movie. He could actually act

  1. this raises the issue of why State Legislators buh-BAMMED!! a proposal for John Wayne Day earlier this month….evidently Marion had some issues with Native Americans:

“Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival,” (Wayne) told Playboy. “There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.”

    • Too bad they didn’t think of the casino gig back in the day. We would all be speaking Navajo, watching Indian & Cowboy movies and be rich as hell.

    • Charile,
The good that John Wayne did for this country outweighs the small issues that surrounded him. They should have a John Wayne Day. He helpled this country through WWII with the movies and support that he made and gave. I am sure we could find state legislators that have said or done things that they would not be proud of. They need to reflect this, but knowing the state legislator, they will give Mao, Stalin, Ho Che Min, and Jane Fonda their “DAY”.

      • Absolutely, while real WW II soldiers in the European and Pacific theaters were actually fighting and dying, Johnny “the big bozo u” Wayne was staring in make believe war movies on a Hollywood and Vine set.

Johnny in several phony war movies, defeated whole japanese divisions with just three bullets and a dud grenade. WW II historians have lost count of the number of toy Japanese Zeros Johnny and Ronnie Reagan shot down from movie sound stages.

Lee Marvin actually crawled up the Guadalcanal beach under heavy Japanese fire while Johnny boy was screwdrivers.

        • Like I said Squatter, he made movies to keep the boys spirits up. Wayne was in his 30’s when the war broke out. The military were taking boys as young as 16 years old. Wayne was too old, bonehead. Speaking of students that helped in WW II, how did Tokyo Rose do for the US? Didn’t she sell out by being a propagandist on the Nippon side? U bet she did

          • BS you halfwit. John Ford had 20 years on Wayne and he served with distinction, Clark Gable had at least 10 years on Wayne and he served with distinction.

A Bob Hope belch did more for the US war effort then Wayne did the hole war.

Wayne was CS – No doubt about it.

    • Then they should not honor Cesar Chavez who referred to illegal aliens as “wetbacks” .

      #libhypocrisy

      • The difference 22 is CC helped those wetbacks.

Johnny Wayne made cheap “Remember the Alamo,” flicks; the story of bunch of jerks defending a indefensible position with absolutely no strategic value.

Had those Alamo volunteers retreated, they would have fought at the Battle of San Jacinto, and been victorious in a decisive defeat of Gen. Santa Ana and the Mexican Army.

        • No he didn’t help those wetbacks. He realized that the growers with the backing of the Chamber of Corruption were importing illegal aliens who would work for peanuts. He demonstrated at the Mexican Border to bring attention to this.

      • OH NO YOU JUST DINT, GOO-GOO!!!

pero no preocupes, Chavez had ultimate street cred, he could get away with it…just like Black Rappers and Comedians can use the term N****** with out fear of reprisal!!!

it’s ALL in the STREET CRED, Goo-Goo, that’s what i’ve been trying to TELL you gueys in here!!

        #MoralInequivalence

        • Chavez was an American who saw how the Chamber of Corruption backed growers were importing illegal aliens who would work for cheap, undercutting the American memeber of the United Farmer Workers.

        • No he was an American who was born in Yuma. He opposed the Open Borders policy of One Big Party the last 50 years that has resulted in California becoming Reconquista.

  2. John Wayne …classic American; all these idiots on here who have done nothing they complain Wayne at 35 and married didn’t do,plus who knows his medical condition;lots of Hollywood did serve;few were Waynes age and few were in combat on the ground. They were media serving, which was fine. What a bunch of losers…
