USC Sunday Buzz: Phil Steele Does Not Predict USC In Top 10

CAM.SMITH.COLO.2College football analyst Phil Steele annually predicts the Associated Press preseason Top 10. These are not his top 10 teams but who he thinks the voters will select. And Steele does not include USC. It is not shocking that USC is not a top 10 team. But I wonder how close Steele considers the Trojans to being top 10 material. Last year he ranked USC No. 3 in his own preseason poll.

  1. Per 2015 pre-season picks then it would seem Mr. Steele is not a very good analyst.

    USC? # 3?

  2. I still predict that SC will be 8-4. They’ll have a good team but that schedule is brutal.

    • I see a loss against AL and @ Stanford – ‘but’ I sense October is not a difficult (road @ AZ) rest home, AZ St., CO and CA.

OR is rebuilding and major historic opponents (UCLA and Notre Dame) are winnable – the question is @ WA.

I love to see a September 3 – 1 and if that happens then ‘full speed ahead’ – one learns through mistakes – not sure how much Helton has learned from last year’s losses esp. the bowl loss to WI – see how clear his choice is for starting ‘qb’.

      • With SC’s young defensive line, I worry about the teams that run right at you and play smashmouth football. That would be Alabama, Stanford, Utah and Nortre Dame. I’m more concerned about Bama, Stanford and Utah because they play them early in the season. I’m less concerned about the Irish even though ND will have one of the best offensive lines that they have had in years because they play them at the end of the year and by that time the trojan D-line will have 11 games under their belt. But I would agree with you…..if they can go 3-1 in September, they might be off to the races.

        • Jim, Notre Dame aka ‘The Princess’ has only one truly tough road game and it’s not TX – it’s USC. They play a weak road schedule with their two toughest opponents at home (Stanford and MI St.) Advantage USC regardless of how well or badly they’ve played prior to 26th November

September will be the making of Helton regardless of the record – he’ll either be what no one ever though he could be or realize he has a lot of changes to make.

          • September will be a big month. If they are going to win big this year, they need to win early. If they can go 3-1 in that month, much of the rest of the season will be against teams that they match up better against and after going 3-1, the players will have the confidence that this coaching staff is the real deal.

          • Well time shall truly tell – love to see a great weekend from Texas – victory over AL, bel-air tech does a half-gainer into an empty cement pond at College Station and ‘The Princess’ knowing their season is already finished Sunday evening with Pat Forde crying

          • People tell me that SC doesn’t have the talent to beat Bama. Rubbish! SC is loaded with talent. They’re inexperienced at QB but so is the Tide. They have everything that they need to beat Bama. Will they? I’ll believe it when I see it.

          • Can you imagine the national embarrassment to AL and in particular, Lane Kiffin, should USC wins that game?

          • It would be an enormous embarrassment, especially down there where football is a religion and where they look at west coast football teams as surfers playing football. I think Clancy is much more familiar with Lane’s offense than Lane is with Clancy’s defense since Lane was only the coach for 5 games that year but SC ran that offense all year.

          • You, you, you, you, you, vile little dung beetle, bruin hating, whiny, pissamistic alky.

    • September 3rd !

After September 3 we will find out just what this team is made of and any predictions before hand are to early !!

      September 3rd !!!

      • I’m not trying to sound like the Nostre Damus of college football and if they can go 3-1 in september, I’ll probably change those predictions. The only reason that i am going with 8-4 is that brutal schedule.

  3. #3??? get out, wolfman..wait, seriously???

If I racall correctly, and I always do, YOU ranked the trOXans #13 and the Kool Aid Crew nearly wet their pantalones!!!!

  4. Off topic to the ‘ruin trolls on this site. Your baseball team got shutout three straight games at OSU to finish the season next to last in the Pac 12. A losing record of 25 – 31 on the year when they were highly rated preseason. Glad Savage declined Haden’s ridiculous offer of $1 million to come over to the Trojans to be head coach.

      • Right now maybe he does too. ucla is one of the worst teams in the conference/country and has nothing.

USC is beating ASU 23-2 (not a misprint) in the 4th to take the final series and will finish .500. No good, but at least mid-pack while the downsliding bruins are putrid. Can’t hit or pitch.

        • Harriet, Mushy’s spitting and about to go ballistic, get his straitjacket and his medications ready.

    • What your point?

On topic, why has bozo u baseball SUCC’d big time since 1978?

  5. Phil must of had a concussion when he picked SC #3. Or he had drunk the Sark kool-aid. Or maybe not Kool-Aid.

  6. “Last year he ranked USC No. 3 in his own preseason poll” ?

Which is why this guy is far more “Copper” than Steel !

So if this guy is consistently “wrong”, what makes this year any different ???

As a true and through die-hard USC “Football” fan who has been so for many many Moons, there was no way that the Trojans were a Top-10 team last year until they “proved” it !!

Cody Kessler was a loyal and some what good Quarterback, Cody had no Championship quality in him, and the “D” was not great therefore Top-20 yes !

    Top-3 ???

    No !!!

This year Top-10, maybe comin at #10, with a Veteran D-Line, #7, if Mad Max lives up to His billing, Top-5…

Lots of if & buts ?

It is truly amazing that people can get paid for being consistently wrong !!!!!

  7. I know I’m a day late here, but does anyone think if USC runs the table, Scott and Petros will complain that the table was weak?
