USC Morning Buzz: When Playing Two-Sports Was Common

HOLMAN

On this date in 1963, first baseman Gary Holman hit a two-run homer and center fielder Willie Brown went 2 for 3 and scored two runs as USCĀ defeatedĀ Arizona, 5-2, to win the College World Series championship.

These days, it’s a big deal when Adoree Jackson does track and football. But Brown (pictured below) was a star USC football player and the original I-formation tailback who led the Trojans in rushing during their 1962 national championship season. So he won a football and baseball national title in the same school year. And Holman lettered in basketball in 1963, the same season he won the baseball title.

  1. Great summer session this morning by the players. Both QBs looked good. Did not see the blogger there. Guess he slept in after watching OJ story…

    • Last summer SW was no where to be found. Garry P was the only one covering summer workouts.

      • Why report the news when you can post archival photos from 50 years ago and talk about ESPN’s OJ documentary. I think Garry P is one of the “lazy media types” that Wolf is fond of whining about.

  2. Even in high school you don’t see mult-sport stars as much any more.

  3. I’m a little surprised that use this as an opportunity to moan on about how SC turned it’s back on tradition by adding a Trojan logo on the helmet, in place of the players’ number.

I suppose you’ll get to that after you finally post about the two linemen SC landed a few weeks back.

  4. Double-sporting is much harder now for obvious reasons.

Willie Brown was my first Trojan football hero. That dude could really run and catch.

  5. I still remember seeing Willie Brown running for Poly …I think he averaged 15yds/run…when they said play ball he was ready
