USC Picture Of The Day

HELLER.1963Halfback Ron Heller gains 5 yards as No. 1-ranked USC faced No. 3-ranked Oklahoma in on Sept. 28, 1963 at the Coliseum. The Sooners won, 17-12. But the real surprise was the attendance: 39.345. For the Nos. 1 and 3 ranked teams in the nation?

  1. I know this game well.OU’s George Jarman kicked the field goal that put it out
of reach.George is one of my dearest friends. He ended up on cover of TV guide,
Which then was huge . I met George and his wife in Dallas 40 years ago, each year we have a standing dinner bet on who’s team has better record.(I’ve been buying lately). However national champ game bet was much greater and humbling for Dr. J last decade.
But here’s a few facts SW left out the temp outside was 107 at game time, the game was Nationaly televised ,and was on local TV also.during the game both fans and players alike were treated for heat stroke…..the surprise was not the attendance.

    • I may be off, but 1963. the Baldwin Hills dam broke, Dodgers won the WS and the aerospace industry was starting to take a hold in the SFV.. Families were just starting out. Lol..Lawrence of Arabia was a box office hit to and the Lakers đŸ™‚

      • “…hit to…” Too is correct. I know 55, it’s the dreaded dictionary enquish butt I no your a strickler for the Korrect.

    • USC had arguably one of the hardest nonconference schedules in the history of college football that season of ’63.They began the season at Colorado, then hosted #3 Oklahoma and Michigan State then travelled to Notre Dame* and then hosted #4 Ohio State. In conference play they also had to play UW at Seattle.

      • Thank you… Life friendships connected by sport are truly great…Dr. George has provided me with many great ones including when we picked up Barry Switzer in an old pick up truck and delivered to back door of Cowboys old offices for negotiations… Barry was nice but gave me a lot of …..

        • That’s really cool too, Peter. Funny I picked Ed Herby at those Cowboys offices when he was playing for them.

That’s what I like the most about this blog. I like the comments of posters like yourself, Sam Bam, troy22, fred, 86, and a few others. Real SC fans realistic and knowledgeable, not the rah rahs and frat boys the other SC site’s.

          • So true my friend, sport for the love of it.upholding pride with character, and calling it the way that it is.
            Tradition with respect

  2. 39.345 is an awfully low attendance. Who was that .345 of a fan in attendance and which 2/3 of his body was missing?
