Power 5 Conferences Change Time Athletes Devote To Sports

The Pac-12 and other power conferences announced athletes would be required to devote less time to sports. I’ve included a chart from the Pac-12 that breaks down the changes. The key will be whether coaches find loopholes. For example, when Henry Bibby coached at USC, there would be “voluntarily” shooting on Sundays. But the coaches were aware of who came and who did not and the players knew it would be in their interests (playing time, etc.) if they were reported as attending the sessions.

Segment Current Rule Proposed Changes
In Season
  • No countable athletically related activities during one calendar day per week
  • Travel day related to athletics participation may be considered a day off

  • Travel days may not count as days off
Academic Year
  • No countable athletically related activities during two calendar days per week outside the season.
  • 14 Additional Days off.  Can be used during or outside the season
Overnight
  • No countable athletically related activities between midnight and 5 a.m.

  • 8-hour block of free time, any time between 9:00pm to 6:00am

    .

oh and wolfman, sorry to inform you that NO Southern Cal coaches made the TOP 50 : ( although i’m sure if a typical homer SC site had done the ratings, Enfield, Kiff and Sark would all be in the TOP 10!!!

but no. no Petey Pom-pom, no ol’ Nike Shoes Mckay, or even Dean Cromwell the Nazi sympathizer who kicked the Jewish gueys off of the ’36 Olympics Team made the cut!!!

    #buh-BAM!

  2. No loophole. It’s the same as summer workouts or player run practices in the regards that the coaches aren’t in attendance, but they definitely know showed and who was absent. It’s called hard work and player dedication.
