Pac-12 Meets With Houston University

The Pac-12 confirmed today that it held an “introductory meeting” with the University of Houston last month in San Francisco. I can’t see how the conference really holds any interest in Houston. Cast aside the athletic interests. Does Houston meet the academic profile the Pac-12 presidents prefer for members? And for athletics, how would it look to not get Oklahoma and Texas but to land Houston?

    • Trying to get a more widespread interest in the conference and make some necessary inroads into the SEC hold on the State of Texas.

Scott better not mess this up – he’s screwed up the Pac-12 network deal he better not foul this up

      • I understand that, but hold out for something better than Houston. Also, don’t you need to add at least 2 teams for balance? Is Fresno State next? How low are we willing to stoop?

        • You don’t want any school that has a ‘city’ on the front and the word ‘state’ in the middle ever.

I suggested they offer it to Rice and BYU or Rice and TCU – two goals met – expand the Pac-12 to the Pac-14 and 2. depth charge the Big 12.

          • I think some of the schools in the conference have a problem with the religious stuff around BYU. I say make another run at Tex and OU if you really need to expand. If you got UT you would have eyeballs watching in all the Texas markets. If LS insist on expanding just for the sake of expanding, it’s just another reason for ‘SC to look at other options.

          • That is a fact per Stanford – they have in the past blocked serious consideration of BYU. Numbers is what succeeds over all concerns.

Grabbing TX would implode the Big 12 which is why that won’t happen nor does OK leaving make sense as they are the sole team in that conference as a legitimate historic top 10 program. Being central time is another issue and why it isn’t for HOU is because HOU would die to get into a Top 5 conference as would any of them

BYU has a plus because of it’s worldwide tv network. BYU could also go to the Big 12 and match-up with Cincinnati.

          • None of those considerations were deal breakers when they first looked at raiding the Big 12. Texas felt they were special and should get a better deal rather than adopt a socialist ethic like Usc and Ucla have. I really think the LA schools should be throwing their weight around more than they do

          • There was talk way back in the early 80’s to form a super conference and it has popped up periodically as recently as 09.

USC and UCLA have a great leverage over the conference ‘but’ calmer heads are the reason any ‘blow it up’ hasn’t happened. As to TX – well everything is overblown in the Lone Star State i.e. three NC’s (63′ 69, and 05′) in 100 years is NOT a top 10 program

but they have a huge fan base that is tied to the same fans for the Cowboys.

‘The Princess’ also has their own tv deal then again they’re approaching their 29th year of irrelevance and the animus by the other 128 programs is not going to benefit ‘The Princess’ any serious consideration when they’ll need it because ‘The Princess’ doesn’t have to play a CCG.

HOU makes sense I just wish it was Rice instead.

          • I won’t belabor the point, but you gotta consider adding schools in pairs. If UT and OU were on the board last time, they can be again. Who comes along with Houston? Adding Hou means you’re just settling and while the conference may have to settle, USC doesn’t.

With regard to the Longhorn Network, they seem to pretty much run the 2005 Natty game and “Trojan War” on a loop. Its like watching the world trade towers going down again. I can’t watch film of any of those things to this day without getting sick to my stomach.

          • Uh best leave the ‘in state preferred initials of their schools’ with the schools – far easier to use the USPS postal codes for states – UT is Utah NOT Texas and where OU means OK to anyone outside of OK is beyond me.

Look HOU is a big plus – – – try to understand, 7 of the nations top 50 incorporated cities are in the state of Texas: Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Austin, San Antonio and El Paso In fact 30 of the USA’s top 50 cities are all west of the Mississippi – i.e. the future is Texas in terms of gaining interest by them and the only way that is going to happen is to get a school in Texas!

BTW what you mentioned about the endless replaying of the January 2006 game does not surprise me at all.

That’s all they have and it’s all the yahoos down there will bore anyone with from now until the Second Coming – it is all they have.

          • I agree with adding some Texas exposure, but don’t add the 5th or 6th best program in the state. Holdout for the flagship school or at least something close to it.

          • The Pac- 16 sounds good. I would have no problem with SD St. and Fresno St joining the Pac conf. Texas and BYU would also be welcome.

          • Not that we have a lead, but trying to hold a lead with that kind of bullpen is a recipe for disaster.

    • He went halfway with CO and Utah and then fell on his face and now is trying to finish his grand plan of a super conference.

      • His act is wearing kind of thin to me. I wonder what his standing is amongst other conference commissioners.

  1. U. of Houston would bring a level of humidity that’s really lacking in the Pac-12 right now.

    • Hey lunchie isn’t that the same reason ‘Jimmah’ cut back goin’ out to Cal State San Berdo’? Howl Cody the Coyote howl it be hot and sticky up in Verdemont.

      • Keeping a close eye on Mora, eh, tovarish? A wise strategy — why not learn from the best?

        • Ack droge….spasebo…..look reenacting ‘The Junction Boys’ only works when you have the talent and brains to replicate it. Mora is steadily declining and worse that mess with Bradley isn’t going away…..

  2. Wish Rice was bigger – academics outstanding decent basketball and baseball. and grab BYU.

  3. His goal since day one was to expand the conference.. He has said that several times.. Houston and Oklahoma have been on the Pac12 radar for 3 years.

    • Finebaum said last week Oklahoma will most likely join the SEC with Oklahoma St. Personally I don’t want anymore teams in our conference.

      • I rather keep it at 10, but .. When was it that Fresno State was showing interest in joing the conference..

Houston and Fresno .. I dont know.. It devalues the conference.

        • You know 55, I thought the very same thing when Fresno St. rammed the ball down bozo u’s throat in F. St’s 24 – 7, 1992 Freedom Bowl victory.

          • Squattter, we all know that Thug U aka ugly will never play anyone tougher than Prarie View St. Will that be a home and home series I wonder? You Clowns make me laugh.

          • Pedophile Protector U hooked up with A&M only after the Aggies took themselves off USC’s schedule because they wanted a piece of the little gutties. And now they have the little gutties’ OC. Nice. He knows all about how the Pedophile Protector operates.

        • Cow Poly is avaliable, CowPolyFan3.0. Maybe they can bring UCSB along with them and keep you Blue-Green Soccer Rivalry intact.

    • No harm in anyone listening. Info is always good. Expansion is still in the works and Houston can drive up the price and affect other schools. What’s so hard to see that we’re using Houston for our own purposes? I don’t get all the sturm and drang.

  4. Wait I thought Cal State LA was on inside track here. Or was it Peperdine?

  5. How about the city of Houston which would give the pac 12 the fourth largest TV market. Along with the second, Hello Direct TV. BYU won’t play on Sundays. Making them non viable for most sporting events outside of football. Also Texas is great recruiting ground. The Univeristy is on the rise. But also getting into the conference would allow them to grow and expand facilities.

    • Those are good points, but I don’t feel like Houston is a very aspirational choice. I guess it could be that they asked for a meeting and LS is just listening and being polite.

  6. U S A 2 day has an article purporting PC is a likely candidate for the LA Lambs head coach position in 2017.

    • Pete Carroll, is God in the state of Washington. There is no way in hell that will happen.

      • Yeah I understand ‘but’ the Petie can’t get LA out of his mind….he’ll come sure as crack cocaine grabs a hold of the fool…..’Gottsta’ have it!”

  7. I’m sure all the USC alums are super excited for those possible future trips to Houston, the most beautiful city in the world.

    • Where you from? Some ‘blue state city’? Houston is a powerful city in Texas and making a move into Texas is the necessity to counter the SEC

      • You are literally the first person I’ve ever heard even imply something positive about Houston.

        • I have friends that moved there and are happy – it is ‘LA’ w.o. any mountains – boom all over the place. The scariest part is the freeway interchanges – no elevated embankment and up up up you go.

  8. Larry, are you kidding?
    Show some sense, man.
What kind of a road trip is Houston????
Is there a University of Lake Tahoe?

  9. Hawaii? New Mexico? Colorado State? Houston is a low rent high school with ash trays.

  10. This is terrible reporting. What happened, as reported by actual working reporters in Arizona and Houston is that the Houston AD REQUESTED the meeting with the Pac-12. The Pac-12 did not initiate the meeting. BIG DIFFERENCE.
