Lou Holtz Doesn’t Like Soccer?

HOLTZ.CONVENTIONFormer Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz is in the headlines today for his controversial anti-immigrant comments at the Republican National Coalition for Life luncheon.

“I don’t want to become you,” Holtz said. “I don’t want to speak your language, I don’t want to celebrate your holidays, I sure as hell don’t want to cheer for your soccer team!”

After hearing Holtz’s incoherent comments before USC-Notre Dame rallies, I’d rather cheer for Germany or Spain at the Euro championships than Notre Dame.

  1. Holtz was a great college coach. He owned USC like no other. SW can’t even write. Go to Europe SW and cover soccer, please.

    • Holtz…well he’s ND.SW, well he’s SW.Both stuck in a weird world… For me , ND is always the team I hope we destroy the most. As much as we took apart the Bru babies last year, the complete destruction of ND in 14 delighted me the most.

      • He defeated us from his arrival until the last year (1996). Holtz has always reminded me of TX and their BCS CG in 2006 (1988)

        • During Holtz tenure, USC was an “average” team !

And didn’t “UCLA” win like 10 in a row at the same time ?

          Time references matter !!!

          Try that now !

          • You are 100% right – it began with Robinson bailing out for the Rams just as sanctions were in-bound on a cheating/paper writing scandal. Then Tollner (1982-1986) then Smith (1987-1991) and then Robo II (1992-1997).

Dark time and self-inflicted but it began with John Robinson splitting for the Rams.

          • We could blame some of it on Todd Marinovich because he single-handedly drove Larry Smith crazy and eventually out of USC. Smith was a pretty good coach until Todd made him a paranoid mess.

Todd also architected the most exciting victory over ucla I’ve ever seen when he outslung Tommy Maddox 45-42 in the Rose Bowl. If you look at that final TD he hurled to Johnny Morton in the corner of the end zone, he actually had no business even getting the throw off. One of the greatest throws ever by a Trojan!

          • Really? I think Smith himself drove his own self out of USC. In 1988 he bluntly stated why was it USC had to play UCLA and Notre Dame back-to-back every other year. Smith had issues. McGee told him (Smith) he was gone just before that loss against Fresno St. (Dec. 1991) because he (McGee) was just told to ‘git’

          • I was being facetious. Smith was an adult. Marinovich was a kid – but a very loaded kid who knew a lot more about playing QB than Smith could ever hope to. Smith couldn’t handle him and it was the beginning of his bitter downfall.

          • My bad – I had to wonder what’d you’d been sniffin’ when I first perused your post.

Smith had Rodney Peete too – two great qb’s. He came out of AZ and before that Tulane. When he left USC he bellyached all the way to his next gig @ MO. That didn’t work out too well either. Poor guy passed away.

          • He was so bitter after leaving SC, he always insisted on calling the Trojans Southern Cal because he thought we hated that. A small man in a lot of ways and I tell ya, Marinovich got into his head, he couldn’t handle it, and he started going downhill. He was treated to the world’s easiest QB to coach, Peete, and got pickled by Todd.

Truth is, Todd just exposed Smith’s flaws. He was a paranoid man (a lot like Bob Toledo actually) who didn’t do well on the big stage and knew he was over-matched in L.A.

          • I recall his wife was an equal screamer of how they’d put ‘Larry’ into the grave – he never yelled about MO or AZ funny how it is that when one gets a chance at real success and it implodes, ‘somehow’ it’s not their fault.

          • You know I respect your opinion, Jack —-but allow me to say a few NICE words about the late Coach Smith. From his remarks at his introduction to the L.A. press corps, to his tearful goodbyes after a dismal last season —-it was clear he cared about coaching with every fiber of his being. I remember the smile on his face as he knelt on the sidelines watching USC come from behind to beat the Bruins in his inaugural year —– because Larry himself was an old fashioned guy who, more than anything else, wanted to see his team fight and “play smash mouth” football (a phrase he often drew on when interviewed at half time). Lest we forget, Larry had solid won/loss records at both Arizona and USC —and he damn near knocked off a couple of outstanding Nebraska teams while at Missouri. (And the only reason he and Todd didn’t beat Notre Dame and Holtz back in South Bend was the appalling officiating —- I believe Larry said something like “I really don’t know how those officials can look themselves in the mirror”). I think we ought give the guy his due.

          • Good points but then he should have moved on a lot more gracefully than the anger and bile he came out with.

          • I hear you. I was at that ND/SC game in South Bend when Marinovich couldn’t get the ball in the end zone at the end. We could’ve won it. It was right there for us, despite the bad calls and spots. Smith had USC really ready for that game. Not his fault we lost.

I agree that Smith was a good coach. But at USC you have to be better than good because that’s just the way it is. He finished bad and made the unforgettable “logos don’t win championships” declaration. Sad.

          • Man, do I ever know exactly what you mean by ‘bad spots’ —-beginning of the second half USC clearly runs for a first down and the official spots the ball 2 yards behind the point where our guy went down.
I think that call broke Smith’s heart.

          • You know your football, gt! Lots of fans don’t get that a single bad spot or bad call at a critical juncture of a close game can make all the difference. USC was starting the second half just the way they started the first half —driving. One bad official decided to save the day for Notre Dame.

          • Michael, we were all watching that game at my friends house that had a bar especially dedicated to SC football, and I’ll never forget the expletives that flew at that moment when the ND ref stole the game from us. I remember Todd Marinovich was quite animated about the spot too.

          • Yeah, it kind of surprises me what comes out of my mouth at times like that too, gt.
Its too bad that the purity of athletic contests can be tainted by corrupt officiating, refereeing and judging —the athletes deserve better (i.e, it would be nice if the honor and integrity of the officials matched that of the participants).

          • A demonstration of utter bad faith is always a bit of a surprise….

          • I will always remember the fantastic rapport between Larry and Rodney. They seemed ‘as one’.
Than came that fateful Fresno St. bowl game. Never have I ever seen such unanimous desire on the part of coach, players, and fans…to disdain the match-up.
Me too, even tho both my parents were Bulldogs…Dad was an SAE and mom a Theta and valedictorian of her graduating class.

          • Rarely do you see a coach spiral downward like that with everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

          • Larry Smith was a pretty good coach until he ran out of Ted Tollner ‘s recruits, then he couldn’t fend for himself.

          • Way too uptight of a guy. Not really likeable and more cynical than confident.

I agree, Tollner teed him up. I still say Todd rocked him back and made him wonder what the heck was going on! It wasn’t supposed to be this hard, but he found out L.A. and USC are a different animal.

For instance, Neuheisel looked promising at CU and UW. He should have killed it at ucla. But he couldn’t handle USC and L.A.: too easy-going and a lightweight on the big stage. Smith was too wound and not smart or creative enough.

      • I hated that time period when Holtz would somehow manage to beat USC every year. He had some great players like Tony Tice, Jerome Bettis, the Rocket, Tim Brown, etc. Thank God we beat the Irish in ’96 in overtime with the help of Sammy Knight. I was there and it was fantastic even though we only had a 6-6 team.

    • Even the Europeans won’t allow him in, and they’re taking anyone these days

    • Langley was arrested at UCLA… Trespassing is the official charge. But according to sources, he was a drunken buffon, acting a fool like he was at a southern cal party. Langly was asked to leave but continued to behave like the southern cal trogie and was arrested. He was heard shouting “It’s not like I double murdered anyone”

      #youcangetatrOJanoutofSouthernCalbutyoucantgetSouthernCaloutofatrOJan

      • I hear he was having relations with a female bruin student, some fraternity members were angry, they called the cops saying he was trespassing. He was shouting, but he was shouting “I’m not Tom Bradley, it was a grown women!”.

        #WeDontTouchChildren

        • Now you are just making stuff up… But if you going to make a story up why would you talk about Langley having relationship with a woman? Don’t you fools learn from OJ, Dixon and Shaw? Double murder, carjacking, armed robbery and jumping balconies had it’s genesis from hooking up with women!

P.S. Raping white women and double murdering them isn’t that great either…

          #southerncalfoolsneverlearn

        • Man the gift that keeps on giving i.e. Mora needs any talent he can get thus Bradley ain’t goin’ anywhere ‘but’ next year (2017) the lovers of wooddie’ have to go to Palo Alto and I’m betting more and more of this whole coverup is going to leak out

          • How did this fly under the radar, but UCLA plays Coastal Carolina in football in 2023. And they say we play cupcakes.

          • That was announced late last week – Coastal Carolina is starting a Div 1 program set to start play in 2018. Games all played at the Rose Bowl for the scratch.
I think they’ll be in the Sun Belt Conference.

          • This game fits right into Thug U’s thinking, play teams that are equal to us in talent and history in football. If we play some one stronger like Fresno St., then we will lose our recruits to them.

          • Not at all. Right now true freshman Jackie Jones looks like the first CB off the bench, and he’ll get playing time this year. Jonathan Lockett and Langley are competing to be the fourth CB. Iman Marshall and Adoree Jackson are the starting CB’s.

  2. Who in the fat cares about Lou Holtz and what he thinks about soccer? Is this Inside USC blogger?

    • Right Kenny, bozo u doesn’t field a Men’s Soccer team. – Wonder why, I guess male Methodist don’t play Soccer.

      #bozoudon’tneednostinkingsoccerteam

      • Squatter, why would USC support soccer? it is such a wuss thing. It is phony and hokey. One player sees another player and they all fall down. Watching grass grow or paint dry is more entertaining than soccer. It is not even a sport. Look in Webster’s Dictionary and they define sport as a hand/eye coordination event.
But, with Thug U aka ugly having a notorious reputation of being a puss school, soccer fits right in there for your boys.

  3. “I’d rather cheer for Germany or Spain” ?

Then migrate/move to Germany or Spain (Or France, Italy…) !

Soccer’s for Wussies, always has been, always will !!!

    WussOn

  4. I can’t believe Lou never went into politics after coaching. That guy would be the perfect politician!

  5. Does anyone remember when Mike Garrett, considered holtz after John Robinson was fired. How weird would that have been is Lou Holtz was the coach of the Trojans?

  6. Lou Holtz has to go down as the most hated coach in the history of college football. The guy bended rules like crazy, and always had that smug look on his face. So many of his former Players, never wanted to see him again after they graduated.

    • I really think Holtz would have been awesome at USC. As you know Garrett went after him. He really knew how to handle star players, USC’s wheelhouse. And he knew how to win.

Before the famous Catholics vs Convicts game against Miami, when he told his team how to beat the Hurricanes and then simply said, “Leave Jimmy Johnson to me,” remains one of the greatest single-line pep talks of all time.

  7. Say what u will about Lou as a coach, but he is a staunch Catholic and loves this country. I like him and agree with what he said about soccer, which is a waste of space and time, and foreigners need to learn English. The DMV ‘s rule book is in 20 languages and can take the test in any language but what is so funny is that all the signs are in English only. People who operate in a different language hampers not only themselves but others trying to deal with them

    • Staunch Catholic? Then he took a serious stand against the church with his anti-immigration comments. The man is pimping for more (high paying) speaking engagements and boy is he going to rack them up now.

    • You’re so right about St. Lou, all good Americans and Catholics hate soccer and anybody who comes to this land without prior permission. Well said.

  8. The only source for incoherent commentary on this board is you, Wolf.

  9. “If you burn your neighbors house down, it doesn’t make your house look any better.”

    – Lou Holtz

  10. So it’s controversial to speak your mind? Libs like sw can always find something to get their panties in a wad

  11. Sweeet Lou may be a xenophobic, race-baiting, nasally, pencil-neck geek, wolfman, but he beat the trOXans UNMERCIFULLY!!!!! 13 outta 14 i believe!!! AND his amazing run ran concurrent with UCLA’s EIGHT YEAR TORTURE of the hapless trOXans!!!! many trOXans were PERMANENTLY SCARRED by this decade of brutality, (some have commented are on this very string!!)

i gotta say, wolfman, that goes a LONG WAY and buys a LOT of FORGIVENESS!!! normally the Cadre would go after this guey like a pack of WOLVES, but it’s a WASH, wolfman!!

    #GoInPeaceSweeeetLou

  12. He not only doesn’t like soccer, he doesn’t like USC. One time he referred to USC as the University of Spoiled Children.

  13. We’re seeing a lot of public faces who, now that they no longer have to worry about their paycheck being affected by their opinion, are coming out and offering some honest feelings that had to be repressed during their time in public life.

We’ll see more of this as the campaign wears on. If Trump gets in, I suspect we’re going to be even “shocked” by the comments we hear from familiar faces.

If Hillary wins, half the country will go ape-sh*t!

  14. Unusual and encouraging move by Helton suspending Isaiah Langley. Previous Socal coaches would have let that slide.
I’m guessing this move by Helton puzzles the new AD who has probably never seen a SoCal football player suspended.
Also stark contrast to Lou Saban’s reaction.
Could SoCal be trying to change their stripes?

  15. I am liking Lou Holtz more every day and liking the wolfman less.

First they were not “controversial anti-immigrant comments” and you can stick your liberal Daily Beast craaaapfest where the sun don’t shine. Lou Holtz loves American unlike like apparently the blogger, well we know he doesn’t like USC…. And really what real red blooded American likes soccer anyway ??? really. Lou wants to Make America Great Again and that means no soccer, no sharia, no terrorism, more jobs, fair trade, national border security – and if you think that’s a problem, get a ticket out.
