USC Morning Buzz: Nothing Like A National Title Trophy Sold Off

I usually get irritated when I look at sports auctions for two reasons: I always find something USC-related that has no business being sold andĀ I wonder how it ever left the athletic dept.?

Let’s look at the below items. A national championship trophy from 1974 and the 1974 MacArthur Bowl Trophy. Neither of these things should ever have left Heritage Hall. They were part of the Newport Sports Museum Collection. The museum used to be in Newport Beach. Heaven forbid the museum simply donate it back to USC instead of selling it off.

USC.AUCTION

This is hardly unique. When Heritage Hall was renovated, trophies were stored just about anywhere, including in unsecuredĀ storage areas where people could sneak off with them if they wanted it bad enough.

  1. Scott was this under Garrett or Haden or both? Look we realize power goes to the head esp. of these two but , at a minimum, that is/was their job – safeguarding the awards.

Good riddance to the two of them for their indifference to the theft of USC.

Again – that was their job.

  2. Don’t give the Bruins any ideas… sneaking off with the USC trophies might be the only way they get a pair.

  3. I’m not sure who the AD was at the time of the thefts, but I’m glad the LA Times revealed Pat Haden for the person who he really is, and I hope he continues to hide or stay out of the spotlight, which ever you want to call it.

    • Amen Fred – I too am wondering just when is there going to be a follow-up to Pat’s sweet squeeze for his daughter and sister-in-law and most importantly himself.

I guess that plan to mosey on back to NBC for ‘the Princess’ broadcasts is ” …in the gloaming.”

    • Not sure if Pat Haden was AD at the time, but he was the starting QB for the 1974 season when they won the MacArthur Bowl Trophy.

  4. The school should be getting these back unless they are duplicates or something given to each player. The trophies belong to the school and should be returned.
Be a good alumnus and buy them for us Scott.

    • Excellent point, Old Trojan. Scottie may have to get a second and third job to bid on a trophy.,

  5. I’ve been wary of the real pat Haden for the last few years. A few years ago, the television camera caught pat Haden going ballistic on the sidelines, after a call that went against USC. The thing is there really wasn’t anything bad about the call. This wasn’t against Stanford, it was another game. So obviously pat Haden has a certain amount of entitlement.

    • In fairness that was as much on the incompetent cowardly Sarkisian as it was on Haden i.e. ‘Sark’ knew ‘Pat’ had his back and cried for it.

      • How many other head coaches, have asked their bosses to complain to the officials for them. It was extreme incompetence by both Sarkisian, and Haden!

    • Gt22 you’ve seen it from upclose, because you are on the sidelines in close vincinty of him. Do you have any stories?

  6. If they wanted them back, with all the money the university has, they could have gone to the auctions.

    • Well on Haden’s watch he just had all those other foundations and committees he had to attend – how’s it goin’ Pat? Any idea when we’re going to be told on just when you intend to pay back to the Mayr Foundation?

What’s that? Too busy with your ‘scale model’ of the Coliseum? Boy I’d bet you move if ‘The Princess’ called huh?

      • It may be too much Boonesfarm Strawberry Hill but I find myself agreeing with Al on this issue.
        Weird.

  7. I understand all proceeds from the auction are going to the Josh Shaw School of Water Safety.

  8. All UCLA gymnastics, softball, water polo, ping pong, pocket pool, and tic-tac-toe National Championship Titles were thrown on the curb. Not a single human being cared about them.

    • Sam,
You should come by Pauley some time. You’ve never seen so many National Championship banners in one place.
Of course, there isn’t anywhere else you can see that many.

      • Must be they stole a whole bunch of people banners then, they sure didn’t win any. HAWR HAWR

      • FACT…..

USC HAS MORE MEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

You can have as many women’s NC’S as you want.

  9. thanks, wolfman, this story really illustrates how WORTHLESS the pre-BCS/Playoff Nattys were! not even worthy of keeping on a shelf!! i mean, who cares about the Kellog’s Pop Tart Champeenship, except trOXans with massive inferiority complexes???

sounds like Southern Cal could barely GIVE these junk trophies away!!

  10. USC Morning Buzz: Nothing Like A National Title Trophy Sold Off,,,

Have to agree (finally!) with the wolfman.

    1. How the hell did these private entities get USC property trophy ?
    2. How can they sell these off without USC approval ?
    3. The Newport collection should be investigated for sale of stolen goods unless they can prove legal ownership
