Morning Buzz: Is USC Physical Enough To Compete With Big Boys?

USC wants to be more physical than last season. But will it be? Here is my analysis on whether the Trojans are better prepared to face teams like Alabama and Stanford.

Excerpt: Trojans coach Clay Helton’s made physical play a focal point for this season, which is wise when Alabama and the Cardinal are two of the first three games.

But is USC any more prepared today for a physical team?

“You never know until the first game,” Helton said Monday night. “Until you step on the field, then we’ll be able to address where we are.”

  1. First of all Wolf, you don’t have any analysis whatsoever. This is another half baked opinion piece with no facts to back up whatever you are spewing, other than to inspire your group of UCLA trolls.

  2. They will be ready to throw leather with the big boyz. Bank on it. The practices have been physical.

  3. One of the most pedestrian, meaningless so-called articles ever published on Trojan football. Don’t waste a minute in this.

  4. My nephew and brother in law have been to several practices in the past few months and they were there yesterday.. USC will be just fine.. This group is more tslented than most” observers” think.. When I get back next week, I hope to see for myself.. Sounds like people are worried more about USC and not them.

  5. USC has the offense line ,they can be very good and push people around ,and have solid depth. On the other side, the defense very young and inexperienced, but are very talented there in minimal experience, a good D line has depth and rotates players in and out, keeping them fresh it’s all about getting pressure on that QB

  6. Everyone in the recruiting world from Greg Biggins to GMARTITEZ said to watch our for Chris Brown two years ago. Now they look like they were right all along because Brown is really coming into his own and just might be a a starter or co-star co-starter with Damien Mama. I like the depth on the OLINE.

  7. PS. I really hate the new format because I am a person who really needs to be able to edit and correct his own comments.

    • Just about 4 weeks to go.. I have my tickets for the game, USC football will be fine.. 10 win season is very possible with a bowl game included with the “10”.

  8. I wouldn’t say it is too late to do anything about it. If USC lacks physical ability they can always find ways to work around it. It should begin in the second half with the adjustments made at halftime. Isn’t that why we screamed for a new coach?
I remember the days when USC used to blow people away and their strength and conditioning coach was making monsters. A few years ago the team started getting faster and strength wasn’t emphasized.
I haven’t yet figured out why they stopped blending the two.

    • USC wins close to 100 games since 2005 and is in the top 5 in wins during that same period nationally, USC is the BIG BOY.. #fighton

  9. Worthless, pedestrian article that SW is famous for. Good for a laugh. Bad if you want info of any sort.

  10. What happens when you change from a rush first team (under PC) to a passing team (under both Kiffin & Sarkisian), is your linemen on offense cannot open holes against the better teams. but they can protect the passer (most of the time). Kiffin was not that interested in defense nor Sarkisian (even though he said he was) just by their recruitment patterns. Helton didn’t show any change in this pattern this last February. But of course, you see 12-plus WRs, 5-plus QBs and attention towards the skill areas. I too am waiting to see what this off-season brings in physicality in line play. Lord knows we’ll need it the first 2-games..

  11. Physical play is all about coaching, which is why USC never played that kind of football over the last 5 years. Tim Drevno got his offensive linemen to play physical ball, but he left after one year because of Steven Sarkisian philosophy, and in comes Bob Connolly. …lmao need I say more?
