As expected, Clay Helton named Max Browne the starting quarterback this afternoon. This is the safe choice. It eliminates idea of Browne transferring. Is it the best move? I think Browne is a great guy. I also think Sam Darnold is special.

We had a tough, but good problem with two quality QB in Sam and Max. In 2003 we had Matt Cassell, Matt Leinart and John David Booty all competing for the spot. It all worked out in the end. I’m sure we’ll see Sam this year.
Matt Cassell was the sleeper, he like his brother is a great athlete.. Matt could have played pro baseball.

I think we’re gonna have to outscore some teams – and we will. But it all starts up front and while I really like Pendergast and many of our defensive players, I still don’t see a superior DL. Hope we’ve got what it takes there. Everyone gets worn down and can’t play their best coverages trying to compensate for a mediocre DL. We shall see.

The player’s respect Max, leadership will go far, the O will play for him and protect him.

We’ll have to blitz to get pressure and Bama probably won’t have to do that. If they do blitz, I’m not sure where are backs are with their pass protection. Last year they were not good especially Rojo. Hopefully he has worked on his hands too because we’re going to need outlets.

A key WR for Alabama last season was a graduate transfer, and they have another one this season.
Darnold saying, “he has no desire to leave USC” will be the topic for our next poll from sw. I think Sam will play on some red zone and possibly short yardage situations. If our O and D-lines perform, the qb position will play out fine. FIGHT ON!
I hope Sam comes in situationally and not to replace Max because of performance or lack thereof.
Part of being a team player is realizing your place on the team. Sam is kid of the future ready for today.
Truth be told if the line doesn’t like Browne he won’t last a whole game. The line in NY hated Sanchez and he didn’t make it out of preseason. The quarterback may make decisions but the line pays the bills.
Excellent !! I would not hesitate to start Sam and play him for 4 quarters against Utah State at Home. It would be First Game Experience Learned for Sam, very handy if he must fill in for an injured Max Browne. Max would get an extra week to prepare for the Tribe before moving on to Beat the H^ll out of the Same.

Be careful what you ask for…. magnifying glasses will now be on Browne and every mistake he makes on the field will follow with “put Darnold in” shouts. If Darnold wasn’t so promising (or special?), this wouldn’t add to the pressure.
It will help if the O-line supports Browne in him not having to scramble for his life every other play. It will further help if the Offense isn’t 2 to 3 touchdowns down after the 1st quarter. 2-weeks before Alabama, the expectations on the players & the coaching staff starts to rev up!
You know Helton made the right choice when Wolf continues to say he thinks Sam is “special”. Do the opposite of the guy who has never played any competitive sport in his life on any level.

SC got a commitment today from texas DT/DE James Lynch. 3* who just decommitted from TCU. Wondering if we should be alarmed by the ranking, but in the end we’ll take the best in the class. Long time til signing day.
Happy for Browne and think he will do a fine job. However, I still think it would have been better if Helton selected Darnold because he would be the cornerstone to turn the past several years around. Now, we have to wait and who knows what will happen. Disappointed but am giving Browne my full support. Go Max!

I’m not sure that he actually won the job but I’d like to see what he can do. He came out of high school the #1 rated QB in the country and so far he’s never had the chance to show what he can do. I’d like to see him get a chance. If he doesn’t work out, they can always switch to Darnold somewhere down the line.
This decision reminds me of when Pete selected John David Booty to be QB over Mark Sanchez after Matt Leinart left. That didn’t turn out all that bad. I think the same may happen here with Browne.
