Morning Buzz: Despite QB Derby, USC Running Game Is Key

BROWNE.DAVISIn this analysis, I look at the importance of USC’s running game to the 2016 season: “Although the quarterback derby swallowed all the oxygen from training camp the past two weeks, it is the running game that carries the offense. This is college football, where running and defense win titles. USC’s got the running game. Defense? Well, let’s see what happens the first month.”

And running backs coach Tommie Robinson talks about facing Lane Kiffin.

“It’s going to be real weird,” Robinson said. “It’s going to be strange for a lot of people. These seniors came (to USC) under Lane Kiffin. Five (assistant) coaches came under Lane Kiffin as head coach.” Full story here

  1. That first paragraph was superb, Flow. Total mic’-dropper. I had to take a break and stop reading.

  3. I was reading your description of Kiffin and kept thinking who does this remind me of “aloof or even hostile”. Then it hit it was the Wolfman minus the successful part.

    • Please stop! ” it’s swallowing all the Oxygen”.
SW becomes more and more reliant on Helium.

    • Ha! [Actually, that could become a pretty funny routine….]

  4. I am curious to see Kiffin’s first play call. Double Reverse? Halfback Option Pass? Kneel down in the Victory Formation? Worse case scenario for Trojan Kiffin Haters….a Bubble Screen that goes for 80 yards.

    • I can PROMISE you this, HADENough—- if our first running play goes for 6 or more yards, we win. If the runner doesn’t get to the line of scrimmage, we lose.

  5. Who would have ever thought we’d need to successfully run the ball on ‘Bama to win? Earth-shattering news, a total shocker!

Another Shocker: Local boy Darnold loves SC and he will never transfer, as he has said many times. SW intends to revisit this every week. It what he calls “investigation.”

  6. Who cares what Kiffin thinks… As for the running game: I expect both defenses to be ahead of their offensive opponent in the 1st game of the season. Could be a low scoring game. Helton Vs. Saban in game management might be the difference.

  7. great analysis wolfman!! the kicker is trOXan coach ADMITTING he is a ‘Bammy fan and that Kiff is in both the players and coaches’ heads!!

Thai, go ahead and up our bets! use the Cadre Training Center in Big Bear for collateral if you have to!!! put it ALL on ‘Bammy!!! this game is a LOCK!!!

    • Just when I thought we had covered everything, you’ve invented a WHOLE NEW reason to root for USC, Charlie….

  8. It’s true that the running game is more important to winning than passing in CFB. The most important aspect of an effective ground game (and the rest of the offense) is a good offensive line.

The success of USC’s offense will be determined by the play of it’s offensive line.

  9. Alabama wins lots of football games with average quarterbacks, and it’s because they control the line of scrimmage, and run the ball. So if USC is productive on the ground, it will give their untested QB’S a chance to develop.
