Alabama Down To Two QBs

Of course Nick Saban doesn’t announce who starts before the season opener. Instead, he said the Crimson Tide are down to Cooper Bateman and Blake Barnett of Corona. There has been speculation in Alabama that true freshman Jalen Hurts was challenging to start.

In some ways, Alabama seems to be similar to USC. Bateman’s the veteran. Barnett is the same class as USC QB Sam Darnold. Saban might play both the first game.

    • I’m with you on this one, Yolo—–and we’re BOTH with Sporting News [which predicts that Alabama’s Saban and Kiffin will go with the safest choice for quarterback, a conservative game plan…. and LOSE 38 to 33].

        • We’ll beat Alabama —-but I can’t promise it’ll be 38-33. We may beat them a lot worse.

        • If we get ahead, they’ll have to open up their offense. And that could go either way for them. But if things go south, watch Saban and Kiffin explode into tiny pieces (probably on each other)……

  1. Anybody can play quarterback for Alabama, and they will beat you, because they win games by controlling the line of scrimmage. They don’t try to fool you , and there’s no secret in what they do, they run the ball down your throat, then tell you about it after the game. USC use to dominate the exact same way, until the administration decided to hire coaches that thought they were smarter than everyone else. Remember when former coach, Larry Smith said you can’t beat teams like that anymore ? Hilarious. …lmao . Only a handful of school’s can load up on linemen, and dominant the line of scrimmage year after year, and SC is one of them .

    • Fred—even though Larry Smith couldn’t beat Notre Dame, he beat everybody else at some point or another (UCLA, Michigan, etc). And he did it with power football.

      • Larry Smith was a good coach, until he ran out of Ted Tollner’s players, because he’s couldn’t keep the recruiting momentum going with his uptight attitude

        • Solid observation, Fred. But he did great with OTHER people’s players —at Arizona, USC and Missouri….

          • He was a bust at MO save for 1998 – a bust and sadly the way he spewed out hsi anger after justifiably getting sacked was his own fault. Whining about playing bel-air tech and ‘The Princess’ back-to-back was the worst.

  2. ESPN reported last week that Hurts won over the team and was gonna be the starter. Bama fans were terrified because Blake Barnett was and I quote an “interception machine” during practice. Bateman and Cooper must’ve played better during the week and edged out the opportunity. From what I hear Bateman is similar to Max Browne and Barnett is similar to Sam Darnold so at least our defense will have prepared for both QB’s.

    • If you are recruiting top QBs, it is hard to imagine planning to play a true FR in this particular game, in Texas, against USC.

Pendergast would probably like the idea, given his pressure style of D. Saban would probably not like the idea, given Pendergast’s pressure style of D.

If would seem to require an injury. Or very poor performance by the AL offense, which seems kind of unlikely, given the line talent and the skill players.

Nick Saban: riverboat gambler. Great story, for a man in his 60s. But, unlikely.

Meantime, how much will loss of Wheeler hurt? It may take some pressure off Saban regarding which QB to start.

      • Chuma Edoga got a lot of work last year starting when Wheeler was out, and has been the started the whole month of camp. Wheeler has been inconsistent during his career, but his experience is also very important. The play of our LT will be magnified in this game. Alabama’s Defense is going to bring it. Edoga will have to stand tough and stay poised.

  3. What no “and Kiffin is involved” barb?
this is vintage Kiffin make everyone guess until the last second….only it didn’t work and the team had to adjust to the stupidity.

  4. ‘If’ we win it implodes the entire 2016 season for the SEC and they could very well be the conference on the outside looking in esp. if be-air tech takes down TX A&M, Clemson takes down Auburn, WI over LSU, and highly unlikely but the same per NC vs. GA all on the 3rd
