The Coliseum Experience

This is a general and specific observation. I’ve always assumed whatever problems existed over the years at the Coliseum would be solved once USC took over. But here we are a few years in USC being in control and there really is not much difference, other than those surcharges you pay for on your tickets.

The problems reached a peak on Saturday when the new security measures kicked in and fans were left in long lines. It is not an excuse for USC to say we live in a dangerous world and metal detector screenings are a way of life. USC’s job is to make sure the fans do not miss the game because of these measures.

The stadium looked like it had about 50,000 fans Saturday and I’ve received plenty of complaints from fans about waiting 45 minutes to enter the stadium. What happens when USC gets 90,000? I’m shocked the Rams fans did not riot.

  1. Or maybe don’t show up to the game with a giant bag of stuff? Yes, drinks are expensive and that does suck. I see how you’d buy a water. But other than that, this is about complaining and whining because that’s what people love to do.

    • People don’t love waiting in lines to get searched like at LAX. There has to be a way for the six figure salary administrators to earn their money for once and come up with a better way of searching people without ruining the Game Day experience.

      • agreed. but you have to adjust to the new reality. It sucks, don’t get me wrong. But I’ve seen people show up to games with bags of food, drinks, snacks for the kids…as with everything there’s a middle ground. People have to pay attention. I thought the ticket office did a pretty good job of letting season ticket holders know about the new policies.

  2. I have to say this needs to improve before next game. But if you have metal detectors react when something sets it off. If you want clear bags look at them more .
I really think it was overkill for this crowd. I remember when we would carry a cooler with root beer to the games. They were in heavy glass bottles. Nobody cared because we were civilized enough to not throw them.
So my question is whatever happened to Hire’s root beer?

  3. Have to agree with you here, Scottie – at the “23” gate, there were 3 unused metal detectors – seems they have the capacity to deal with the lines, but not the willingness to hire people. Like the rest of the US economy…..

        • Yep.It’s baffling to me why the first instinct of many here like The Dr. Rachel Maddow of Inside USC is always to defend the lazy, stupid, visionless incompetency of mercenary hired help instead of the alumni and students that attend USC games. Their straw man arguments are weak sauce.

  4. Welcome to the world of terrorism.

I can remember bringing in bags of beer at Stanford and then heading over to the local grocery store to load up on more beer at halftime

  5. Last year’s Rose Bowl game was no different. Long lines to get in. Even though people were instructed to use clear bags many people did not, slowing things down even more. It is like the early days of airline TSA security. It will take some time to educate the public on what the can and cannot bring to the stadium.

  6. Thats the world we live in now, people feel the need to take weapons into games, so the University is just taking precautions.

    • 9/11 was 15 years ago. Why are the measures increasing this year and why can’t the time taken to be searched be mitigated with more staff, more gates open earlier etc?

      • With the Rams back in LA, football fans across LA are mixed and emotionally attached to other teams. What was it a few weeks ago when SW posted the video of the fight during the Rams game, He also commented about will this be the norm at USC games. Since they both share the stadium, security measures will be looked at more. College fans are way more better than the nfl fans. I was there on saturday, I was not bothered by them doing this. They could do express lanes and designated lanes for fans carrying bag etc. It will work itself out!

  7. The thing that pissed me off was that the security damn near stripped searched a two year old. It was ridiculous. They checked under his hat, made him take off his shoes, the whole bit. How about exercising some common sense. There is is primarily one group of people who want to cause death and destruction on a grand scale, and infant children and the elderly are not apart of that group.

  8. 1. Having to use metal detectors to protect innocent fans is not an excuse, it is a reality.

    2. Would you arrive to the airport 30 minutes before your scheduled departure and be pissed when the plane left without you?

    3. If there is security screening at the game then you arrive a little bit early – if Maria Riley would have gotten out of bed 10 minutes earlier then she would have made kickoff.

    4. It’s a simple economic fact – if you hire more security personnel then it cost more money and the ticket prices need to be raised higher.

    5. The complaints you received were from people arriving late and who didn’t take into account the extra time needed for security – only one person to blame for that.

  9. I got in with no problem and I also received my Marcus Allen bobble head. The nfl and the ncaa treat you as if you are a criminal. They did the same thing with the rams by having you go through a metal detector, take everything out of your pockets, and glare at you as if you are a criminal. This experience would be fine at all ugly functions because of their past Thug history. The fences are higher and deeper. Then to top it off, if you want to listen to the band on the opposite side of the band, the security will try and kick you out by the third song. I asked the supervisor why is it on the side of the band is playing people are able to stay on my side, I am not. He told me they were students. I said, not all of them are students and who cares if they are students, they are still people. the USC games have the nfl feeling, get you, charge you all of your money and leave. By the way, don’t worry about the product on the field because you are paying for the, “The NFL/NCAA Experience”. The only experience we are getting is being fleeced and shoved.

  10. I realize the world changed 15 years ago yesterday for the worse but yeah why weren’t there more personnel on-hand to ensure there wasn’t a bottleneck around the Coliseum? If Brussels and Paris and well as Istanbul proved anything – a terrorist is no longer after destroying an aircraft or a train – what he is after is a lot of casualties. If that isn’t the concern then why the long drawn out inspection?

Hey Haden what exactly are you doing specific to the Coliseum? Or is studying the ingress and egress something far below your rank and privilege?

  11. It’s like reading complaints about TSA lines! I went to both Rams home games and it went smoothly with little to no lines. Part of that was the larger number of personnel I saw at gates for the Rams game than USC games, even though the Rams games had 25,000 more fans attend. Also, the lines at the USC game were uneven because of where the bulk of tailgating was and where fans were coming in. Gate 23 was slammed and had long lines, but Gate 19 zipped through in seconds. Sometimes, it pays to just walk to the next gate. Also, there was more confusion among USC fans than Rams fans over the bag policy, but that will eventually sort itself out. Had way more elderly and disabled USC fans coming through so that required more time and attention.
