Browne Backlash

With USC scoring one touchdown its two real games, you might think fans would rejoice at a QB change. But I’ve seen and heard a lot of support for Max Browne. The poll below confirms fans believe the change was sloppy. People feel like Browne was treated poorly. He waited 44 months and didn’t even get three full games. That seems to be the fuel of this backlash.

  1. What is fueling this backlash is the fact that Browne is being made the fall guy for the utter, sheer incompetence of Pat Haden, Clay Helton, and Tee Martin.

    Don’t blame Browne because The Capper once again made a crappy hire.
    Don’t blame Browne because Helton is completely over his head as the Head Coach at USC.
    Don’t Blame Browne that Helton/Martin are hell bent on running the pansy a** spread offense, even though the spread is not in his skill set or the offensive line’s skill set.

      • Helton owed it to Browne and the rest of the team to put If together an offensive philosophy that fits Browne’s skill set once he named him the starter. Now if Browne couldn’t get it done if that was done, then I don’t think anyone would have a problem puttin in Darnold.

        • Regardless of the system used, I predict Darnold will run it better. He should have been starting from game one.

          Most predicted here Browne would be replaced because Darnold has the higher upside and impressed more during practices.

          Will be interesting to see how Browne does if he transfers. I don’t remember that last time a USC transfer QB did diddly.

  2. Why would anyone want to belong to the Toejam family after Browne is treated like a peon. bozo u couldn’t have defeated the TIDE using .50 cal machine guns.

    bozo u wasted it’s cupcake season on Kessler instead of preparing for the future. Now the fruits of that horrendous mistake are rotting on the bozo u vine.

    • This will all come to a end soon. USC still has ample time to right the ship with a strong hire. Several CFB teams have gone through worse. USC will find their way out of this mess. When you are the crown jewel of the P12, Everyone is for you or against you.

      • Absolutely, the pattycake, the Clown Jewel of the Pac-12.

        Since when does a Crown Jewel FB program suffer an atrocious, humiliating National TV 52 – 6 loss.

        Since when does a Crown Jewel FB program execute a 40 + yard FG when down 35 points and needing TD’s in hope of tying or winning (LOL) the Alabama game.

        How about that Clown Jewel bozo u FB program.

        Where’s EJ?

        • Im not going to sit here and debate with a fanwagon from outerspace. Just see where your team is at the end of the season. Thinking a Ucla fanwagon. If rooting for a mediocre team like Ucla makes you happy, then hey let it rock your world.

          USC is and always will be the Crown Jewel of the Pac. Once the issues are fixed, all will be fine.

          USC will win many more NC’s in the future. Something Ucla has not seen in decades and may well never will.

          Good luck saturday against the trees . They seem to have Ucla’s number. And for now they have USC’s. That will change, I am sure of it.

          • That’s like saying once you get your 1948 Kaiser running, it will be the best car on the block.

      • Not according to their W/L records.

        UCLA has scored more than 16 total points in competitive FB games. Oh yes, J. Rosen is still the QB.

  3. The fuel that sustains the backlash is the fuel against Helton. Max is imply a log thrown onto a fire he did not start.

    If Helton had a resume of past success, if USC didn’t look sloppy and disorganized and inept, if there were a plausible argument to support the following: “We might have won if not for Browne”, then, yes, maybe the sentiment would be less supportive of Browne.

    And it isn’t like there weren’t questions about Browne during spring and fall. One of the more vigorous arguments happening on the boards was “If Browne is so good, then why, in three years, did we not hear of him making any real push to start, and why is he, after four years, being pushed to the last week of fall camp by a redshirt freshman?”

    Many folks feel that Helton was being cynical in naming Browne starter — that he didn’t want to Browne to transfer because an injury to Darnold would doom the season. You even pushed this line of thought.

      • What about the players? If they are not getting it done how about some time on the pine. Let someone else take a shot.

        • First team is usually your best guys, not sure the 2,3,4.5 guys are ready, if the first team is not getting it done. The depth on the O&D are probably not ready either. I guess we will see on friday night.

        • The deal is a head scratcher. He was not even allowed to ride the bus back to USC to gather his belongings and say good luck moving forward to the team and staff. Its ok he won 52-6. He said goodbye.

  4. I don’t feel sorry for Browne, he never should have been the starter to begin with. He’ll land at a nice FCS school.

  5. If Darnold had performed like Browne after two games against really tough opponents, he would be replaced by Browne, regardless of the numerous reasons for USC’s crappy play, some of which are pure coaching.

    Browne had his shot. Didn’t look bad but only average at best. He shouldn’t complain. SC needs to big jumpstart, and while unlikely, it wasn’t going to happen under Browne, especially with USC’s OL. Swann understands this which is why he told Gomer to make the switch before the UTAH game.

    • Honest question: has Swann found himself having to take on a role somewhat similar to an NFL general manager at this point?

      • I’d say Swann just wants to give advice to a coach/staff that has shown to be over-matched in many areas. Must be frustrating for him to see things the USC staff hasn’t picked up on. We could still win a lot of our remaining games. But if the staff doesn’t make some key adjustments, SC will end with a losing record. While I don’t believe Swann has confidence in Gomer any longer, he knows Gomer, who’s in a very weak position now, needs a push to get USC retracked.

        Swann’s not a passive guy and he feels more urgency to fix USC football than Haden did. Where Haden was more frustrated, Swann is more directed and understands the money-making sports can’t lag the non-revenue ones – which is where SC excels now.

        Truth is, Swann’s got USC football in the palm of his hand now. He knows this is a critical time and has inserted his thinking directly into the product much sooner than he wanted to. I’d definitely call him a powerful GM who doesn’t like what he sees so far.

  6. Helton was on record in the spring saying Darnold could win the Heisman someday. Given that, why did he go with Browne other than to prevent a transfer of his backup QB?

  7. Sometimes Wolf you remind me of a yo-yo. You are either up or down, it all depends on pulling your string.

  8. Everything is Max Browne’s fault, the offensive line is soft because of him, and he even signals plays to the offensive coordinator, so they can signal them back to him . And guess what? Only eight players lined for PAT’s because of Browne, too.

    • Don’t forget that Browne signaled in the wrong defense to Hawkins on many occasions.

      And everyone heard Browne yell to the punter “fall on it” when he fumbled the snap.

    • I think the OLINE is just SOFT. Sam Darnold will make them look better than what they really are and they will still be in fact SOFT.

        • Helton’s the guy who’s been preaching physical toughness, but Neil Callaway was supposed to be the “guy” with all the experience and was the “legitimate” OLine coach. I think all three are to blame, but Banner and Wheeler are the most overrated OT’S in college. They have 5 years experience in the program and have not shown any kind of big talent that you would think they would show being RS Seniors. It’s a collection of failure, but it’s inexcusable when you factor in the years and experience of Callaway and the OLine.

          • A little like having Reggie on the sideline and it is 4th and 1 vs. Texas with a Natty on the line.

          • Sam Bam, You are exactly right. The reasons for USC’s Offensive Line’s pathetic performances rest with Helton, Callaway, and Martin. is it possible that the shear talent of the Trojans will make for “Competitive ” games against the likes of Utah, UCLA, California, ASU, U of A, and Colorado,?? IMO, our best chance is with Max Browne under center, not Sam Darnold scrambling for his life.. .

      • This is the state of the OL at southern cal

        Banner=SOFT
        Wheeler=CRAZY
        Talamaivao=SCARED
        Mama=FAT
        Falah=NO HEART
        Edoga=MISSES MAMA (not the fat one, his real mama back in Georgia)
        C.Brown=DUMB
        Coach Neil Callaway=NOT QUALIFIED

  9. More drama.
    Goodness, gracious sakes alive!
    Three more years of wasted talent and how many coaches in the last 6 years?
    I’ve lost count.

  10. The biggest disservice to Brownie was having him sit on the bench for 4 years or whatever and lose his edge and game savvy.

  11. The poor start is not Max’s fault. Not playing any real time in the last couple of years did not help him or the team. If you look at the last 3 games he did get better with each game. Just not enough to get the win and still has a lot of work to get to the level he needs to be at to start. His dedication is a plus to USC. I am hoping he sticks around if Sam goes down he can step in. i understand the need for Sam to take over but they had better keep Max in the loop and continue to bring him along.
    FIGHT ON

  12. What you mean, SW Dummy, two real games ??. Picking Darnold before allowing Browne to compete against beatable teams like Utah and Arizona State, after beating the snot out of beatable Utah State, was completely without justification. Because a worthy class act member of the “team” was smeared by you print, you would be sent out to the Field with your cap in your hand.where the Bit is Turning South.

  13. Lol. Yall need to stop lying to yourselfs. Browne wouldnt start on any top 20 team in college now period.What the situation is everyone is scared of change and its coming. The days of the stiff non athletic,pocket passer is over. Ask you last 9 NCAA Champions. Isupport Darnold and he should of started way before Browne. Jalen Green should be placed back into the fold and get time also. He was done seriously wrong.
