A Contrarian USC View

I’m wondering if USC turns it around this week. Sam Darnold is at quarterback. JuJu Smith-Schuster should be more involved. The running game should be better. Utah should be less imposing than Alabama and Stanford. This should give USC a good chance for a victory.

On the other hand, what is the offensive line going to do in a noisy environment? Will the defense forget to cover anyone? Will the special teams have eight men on the field?

  1. Just got the word from a mate who lives in Utah that the first day of autumn is indeed remarkable up there, with the red leaves competing with yellows and oranges. There is also a slight rain.

And, finally, the Utes are out in force with their college flags attached to their car and the game is a sellout. So expect it to be very wild, and loud, when SC has the ball.

But I for one am excited; it is nice to have a dual threat quarterback. Or do we recall how the SUCLA bum knocked us off 3 straight times before Posin’ Rosen saved SC football?

    • It’s a huge game, John. I hope SC fans can stop crying in their beers before kickoff tomorrow.

    • A rookie, totally inexperienced duel threat QB.

Chances are Darnold will fumble twice and throw at least 2 ints in another bozo u loss. The pressure on Darnold to rescue bozo u’s FB season is unfair and way out of his rookie FB capabilities.

      • Pretty good assessment of Darnold. Similar to how Rosen performed in his first official meeting against USC. I forget the score though, oh yeah 40-21 USC.

      • It’s The University of Southern California, JO. Be that as it may, JO, your assessment “The pressure on Darnold to rescue USC’s FB season is unfair and way out of his “rookie” FB game capabilities” is loaded with credibility, IMO. With Browne under center running the “I” Formation (JO, you might recall the O.J. Simpson “I” Formation. I know I do, fondly) I am convinced our Trojans would send Salt Lake City Utah Ute fans home brow beat and miserable. Doesn’t appear to be in the cards though.

    • They usually sell out, the weather is mild, and yes, the trees are starting to change color, something So Cal people are not familiar with

  2. Optimism is a contrarian view for you, Mr Wolf, but I see it got away from you there in the 2nd paragraph.

Mobile QBs are even harder to block for, but they can get an O-Lineman off the hook with their mobility. Sam may help us put lipstick on a pig if that’s just what we have up front.

  3. This is what we’ve gotten to, pinning our expectations and hopes to defeating middling programs in the PAC 12 South which might be the worst Power 5 division in CFB.

  4. The blogger must have been a fan of the old Batman TV series because he ends most of his posts the same way the shows ended…with a bunch of questions.

  5. “should” playing a particularly important role in Wolfman’s analysis here. Maybe add that SC fans “should” stop thinking we’re living in 2006 still?

      • No basketball fans I know think we’re in 1995. We’re all aware of exactly what our team is and has been.

      • More like 1975, Gollom Wolf. The ruin AD ran off their only winning coach after the 1995 championship.

  6. Would feel better if Darnolds first start was atz home. I think there will be attempts to get the ball to JuJu maybe even too a fault based on the pressure to do so. If the offensive line contunues to have penalties like false starts then their needs to be changes with the offensive line.

  7. It will be a tough game, heros could be in the making at the expense of Max Browne – business is business, and progress is progress.

    FightOn !

Im thinking close victory for Trojans 21-17

  8. Just hope JuJu doesn’t have a fit and give up if he doesn’t get the ball enough. With AJ in and Mitchell, I don’t see any reason to have to throw to JuJu all the time, those other guys can take it to the end zone just as fast.

    • If SC can’t handle that weather then they really are in trouble. And, if it does rain it won’t be a deluge, more like spit

  9. If Sam plays the way he has during his short stint as inserted quarterback, we may see the next great quarterback for USC.
Or we will see the Trojan coaching staff spiral out of control. Crashing burning like a bad play.
Isn’t that gist of the post?
I like to think USC can win with the personnel they have, used in the correct manner with discipline . I hope we see enough of this tomorrow.
