      who’s the interim coach??

      #Clancy??

      • Paul

Maybe the third time is a charm with Ogre

      • Billy Jean

        Wolfman!

        #cantbeanyworse

  • junjunm3

Adjustments anyone? That’s one long scoring drive after one long scoring drive. They got carved up like Thanksgiving turkey.

  • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

Darnold is a stud, the coaches are a dud

    • Pac12 fan

If Darnold grows yes. Right now still learning

      • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

        Darnols was very good

        • Pac12 fan

He was good . But needs time to grow. Lime most usc Qbs they have tons of skilled guys around him .

          • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

Uh, he was miles better than Browne will ever be

          • Pac12 fan

Great! We are 1-3 . He wasnt great though. Got beat by a Washington retreact rthat went to Santa Montica and then went to Utah

          • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

            You are clueless

          • Pac12 fan

You are starting to sound like a guy that hired Clay Helton! The best choice right there in front of us after an extensive search!

          • Pac12 fan

Seriously? Great we are not even a good team with the best recruits in the Pac 12

  • BearBryant3

1-6 and the only team more talented then them is alabama.

  • Pac12 fan

Besides having the best talent in the conference we are 1-3 .

    • junjunm3

We will be hearing “most talented 1-3 team” til our ears bleed all week. Too bad that talent is under the guidance of a ten cent coaching staff.

      • marvgoux1

ESPN will be merciless next week.

    • JustOwns

      LOL

  • Mr. Flores

This proves class recruiting ranking dont mean $#!t. Sc coaches are sorry.

    • 88 Straight

Alabama continually has the top recruiting classes. They do pretty well because they have a head coach and a team so deep he can dump the miscrrants.

  • JBKayak

I love Darnold, to bad coach didn’t have faith and punted

  • Bucket Owns Ted

We don’t have best talent in pac 12 but did find a QB. Now to find a coach.

    • CardinalnGold

We had the best high school talent. Unfortunately this inept coaching staff failed to develop them into college studs. Other teams are making diamonds out of coal.

    • marvgoux1

      What are you talking about?

    • BearBryant3

Every team in the pac has holes on their team if usc isn’t the most talented, it’s number 2.

    • Arturo

The talent is fine. Some of these players on O need to be moved over to play D.

  • JustOwns

Hey bozos, I got home just in time for Utah’s 2nd 4 and 1 conversion and watched as Utah scored the winning TD.

bozo u does it again – snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

    #bozou 1 – 3; 0 – 2 in conference.

    • BearBryant3

Were more insulted by the 1-3 start then any comment you can make

      • JustOwns

        If you say so.

  • Pac12 fan

Darnold still learning . I wouldnt say he is a stud but certainly has room to progress

    • CardinalnGold

I like how decisive he is….Except for that last play.

      • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

The last play didn’t have a chance from the start

      • Pac12 fan

Why has USC accepted mediocrity over the last 10 years? We have so much talent and can recruit the best?

        • Alvarado

Pat Haden is the reason – now he’s wondering where his midas touch vanished to after his preceding 40 years of ‘magic’.

        • Arturo

They don’t recruit enough D and OL.

  • UCLA Dynasty

Wow, you guys suck. Tell me I’m wrong. So soft. You just escorted Utah down the field.

    • ANDYISWINNNNNING!!!!

Go play with your truck and small peas….

  • Pac12 fan

    Defense sucks

    • marvgoux1

Looked good in the first half.

  • junjunm3

If Lynn Swann needs a lift to LAX right now I’ll give him one lol.

  • CardinalnGold

Can somebody please show Biggie Marshall to the bench!? The kid makes a huge mistake game in & game out!

We’re in the dark days of USC football.

    • marvgoux1

Then 710 AM interviews him after the game.

      • CardinalnGold

Ugh, glad I wasn’t listening to that broadcast.

        • marvgoux1

Now I’m glad they cancelled Trojan Brunch on Sunday mornings.

          • CardinalnGold

The Trojans are under the curse of ESPN radio. They’ve disappointed ever since they moved over from 570. The Lakers are under the same curse.

    • JustOwns

Wait minute, Biggie has another “I’m a FB star” coming out real soon.

    • Jon Cassidy

That was a garbage PI call. He played well.

      • CardinalnGold

He was mugging the receiver 10 yards down the field. The call was legitimate. That Mama ineligible player down field was a little questionable though.

        • Jon Cassidy

Check the replay. Just a tight shadow. Mama call looked bad to me, too. He might’ve got a step two past three yards downfield, but I saw a half-whiffed fire block, which counts as engaged, IMO.

  • JL

Punted again on 4th and 1 in Utah territory.. .Heltons gotta go.. .smh

    • Clay Russell

      It was 4th and 3

      • JL

With a moblie QB playing the way Darnold was playing..U gotta go for it.. .poor clock managment.. poor coaching decisions.. .

        • Clay Russell

I understand, but it wasn’t an outrageous decision. I think as the team settles in we’ll go for some of those.

          • gotroy22

It was after Helton had SC punt in the Stanford game late in the 4th quarter.

          • Clay Russell

I understand that, but I’m just not willing to hang him for the punt last night. My issue is with the play proceeding the 4th down. The punt decision just covers up the fact that you needed a better play call from your OC in that 3rd down situation. It should’ve never come to that.

      • FIGHTONtoVICTORY

Helton knew the defense couldnt stop Utah. Shouldve never punted that ball. It’s the sign of a coach with no balls.

        • Jack B

Helton’s way too conservative. Remember that old show Fear Factor? Gomer should be the new host.

          • DMH63

Thank god his contract has a $2.3 mil dol buyout instead of a full five guaranteed.

        • Clay Russell

I would’ve liked to see him go for it, but he appears to be very conservative. Had Darnold been making his 2nd start you might be more comfortable going for it there. I Just think my instincts would’ve said give the game to Sam instead of the defense. That’s the choice you had at that moment and he chose the defense.

          • gotroy22

What did he have to lose? SC was already eliminated from the national championship playoff last week.

          • Clay Russell

Pete Carroll had the same decision to make at the end of the title game against Texas. Pete decided to go for it, failed, left a short field and the rest is history. I don’t think last night was as obvious a call as people are making it out to be. By pure theory I think he was right, but when you add in the trends that the game was following and the human stuff, it was probably the wrong call. You should be able to expect to pin a team inside the 10 and the worse case scenario is that they drive for a field goal and you go to overtime. Maybe now he knows that the defense will not be our strength and we need to keep the ball in the hands of our offense in those situations. Considering he comes from the offensive side, it’s a little surprising that he tends to put it in the hands of the defense so often.

          • Clay Russell

McKay and Robinson probably punt there too.

        • CardinalnGold

I agree, go for it & it shows your team you’re playing to win. Shows you have faith in them to convert.

        • marvgoux1

He should have known they were gassed from that 1st half.

        • GT

You guys are all idiots. He goes for it and doesn’t get it and you are saying why did he go for it. The team played great in a rain soaked hostile environment. A questionable call for a lineman downfield cost a sure score. Utah’s quarterback played great. It was a tough loss. 95% of college football would be 1-3 at this point. I am proud to be a Trojan and always will be. You guys aren’t happy about anything. And if we won, you would still be complaining just like wolfe. IDIOTS!!!

          • Arturo

You are probably right. Most of us are just venting.

          • Steve B.

You are the idiot with all those dumb statements. Who the F are you? You have no knowledge of college football. The team didn’t play anywhere near great. Utah’s QB is ordinary. 4 Tds and 4 Ints. coming into this game. There was no pressure on him the entire game. Trojans fumbled three times on consecutive drives in the 1st half. Adoree Jackson has one touch on offense, are you serious. Where was Justin Davis in the 4th qtr.? Play calling too conservative once again.

          • marvgoux1

It’s sad when SC fans start rationalizing a choke of a 2 touchdown lead in the 4th quarter and a 1-3 start to the season.

          • GT

You don’t even know who I am Steve B. How do you know I have no knowledge. Lol. If you only knew. Calm down Steve. They really played quite well. You don’t think something may have been wrong with Davis? Like I said, you people will never be happy!

          • Pac12 fan

Agreed Troy Williams transferred because he would be the third string QB at Washington this year!

          • Pete

Yup. Lot of plays that could have gone one way or the other. I thought this was their best game. They were underdogs, had lot of turnovers and they were still in it. Darnold reminds me in some ways like Ben Roethlisberger. Not afraid to run and kinda of a gunslinger.

          • GT

Yes, Pete, I think that kid will be something special when it isall ssaid and done. Played great in an extremely tough situation.

          • Jack B

SC might end up being underdogs a lot this year. Hopefully, turnovers and penalties won’t be our weekly excuse. It’s already gotten old.

Bottom line is USC had this game in the bag. You’ve gotta be really special to throw away a game like this. The Utah QB had so much time to throw, he must have been laughing to himself.

It’s not often I feel sorry for USC. I did tonight. Poor guys. They must wonder what it takes to actually win a game against a real opponent. Utah will lose a minimum of 2-3 games from here on out. It’s not like they’re some juggernaut.

          • Pete

Tell me how someone can predicate the future. Utah was No. 3 last year and they lost. Did they throw the game away to Cameron Smith or did he make the plays. Depends what side your on. Here some stats for you. Utah has one of the best defensive lines in the nation and had not allowed a 100-yard rusher in more than two years. But USC dominated the line of scrimmage on offense and the Trojans ran for 213 yards on 33 carries, led by Justin Davis’ 126 yards. Tell me how did that happen?

          • Jack B

Not sure what you’re point is. Under Gomer as the permanent HC, USC is 1-5, having only beat Utah St and lost every big game, most by wide or huge margins. That’s the only stat that matters and if you don’t believe so, just ask UTAH, STAN, ALA and WIS.

USC ran very well tonight, but when it counted, Gomer felt he was forced to punt the ball because he didn’t think he could make three yards either through the air or on the ground. Very telling, regardless of what you think the percentage play was.

USC had looked miserable on D on UTAH’s previous drive, yet Gomer wanted to rely on his wavering D again. We have very suspect DBs across the board except for Adoree and true to form Biggee committed a flagrant PI that enabled Utah to move forward. Biggee gets beat all the time so that shouldn’t have been hard to predict. He’s a S playing out of position at CB which is why Utah picked on him for that crucial play. They knew they wouldn’t even have to complete the pass. Smart.

If you think Utah is so great, that’s your privilege. We made them look better than they are because we couldn’t put any pressure on their QB, our DL is very average and often downright porous, and he tore USC apart for 5 straight minutes and 95 yds to end the game, beating our best DB at the end to do it. Utah’s play-calling is vastly superior to USC’s. More gutsy and confident.

It was a great game. One of the best I’ve seen this year. While Utah was easily beatable, the downtrodden Trojans choked. At least we didn’t get utterly humiliated (ALA) or manhandled (STAN). I don’t know about you but I could feel this all coming in the 4th Q. Slant after slant after slant. It was a drive of amazing beauty.

I don’t believe our coaching is very good. You do? Fine. Time will tell. Also our talent is very spotty and we tend to commit a lot of untimely penalties (big penalties) which is why we deserve to be 1-3.

In the meantime, when you rush for over 200 yds behind a brilliant young QB with some superior WRs and Adoree Jackson, one of the greatest kick returners in the history of USC – and you still lose when you let a team drive 95 yds in the rain on you, that’s pathetic. Utah’s supposed weakness coming into this game was their offense. Not anymore. We made them look like the NE Patriots.

We’re a .500 team in the end. That’s okay. Gomer probably thinks we only lost because Adoree lost his shoe. If you think we’re gonna somehow win out and beat teams like ND and UW that now know you can just run it down our throats at will, or pick on our DBs (take your pick), more power to you.

As I said, it was a great game and the better team won as usual. USC gave it a great fight, which is way more than I can say for some of USC’s other recent losses. To quote Gomer, “We’re a work in progress and I wouldn’t do anything different.”

Next comes ASU, another unranked team. I figure it’s a toss up. Fight On!

          • Pete

Was it CH who fumbled three times in the first quarter. Was it CH who got beat on the winning TD. Was CH who threw late to a wide open JU JU for a TD and had the pass almost intercepted?

          • JBKayak

How long ago was it when USC lost a game when leading by 10+ points?

          • Pete

Sept. 23rd 2016 USC vs Utah

          • Jack B

This has absolutely nothing to do with pride. This has to do with complete acceptance of just who USC is on the field. The team tried hard and battled to the end. Somebody’s gotta lose and this season, it will often be the Trojans. No biggee. But no sense pretending SC is any good.

Hopefully, in 2017 we will have improved a lot. Darnold’s gonna be great and a QB to remember at SC if he doesn’t get hurt.

If you want Gomer, good for you. I’m glad he’s got some support because he’s a very nice man.

          • Ray

Coaching football isn’t about being nice, its about results, and USC isn’t getting results.

          • Pac12 fan

Arent we USC ? Do we now accept 1-3 with the best recruits in the Conference.

          • GT

No of course not, but those were 3 extremely tough games and the team is improving. We should have won tonight. Things are not going our way. But, we will be back. Sometimes it is darkest before the dawn!

          • gotroy22

Extremely tough? Utah barely beat crummy BYU.

          • FIGHTONtoVICTORY

If you’re okay with mediocrity then I envy you. If Helton played to win it wouldnt be as bad but he has not shown than he’s any different than Sark or Kiffin. He pulled Justin Davis from the game for apparently no reason when he was averaging 8 yds per carry.

          • jim

It’s Rice-Eccles stadium. You are get those questionable late calls in favor of the Utes down there.

          • Jon Cassidy

No. There is enough historical data, that the question of when to go for it isn’t usually a matter of opinion. There are close calls, calls that depend on the flow of the game, but Helton’s call was at the opposite extreme – objectively, mathematically, completely and totally wrong. You don’t have to understand that, but he should if he wants to coach football.

          • JBKayak

Play for the win in the road. A football commandment

  • Pac12 fan

We arent building a program? We are just adjusting to criticism

  • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

    PUNT ON !!

  • Jack B

Poor Gomer. He just doesn’t have what it takes – though if he wins a couple in a row, I’m sure some will say we’re on track!

Congrats to Utah! Great comeback victory. They just feasted on USC’s soft, rudderless D. This time USC just got driven silly and it wasn’t the big plays. A new way to lose.

Darnold is gonna be fantastic! What an effort. Love that guy. But our O and D coords suck and our HC is well, Gomer!

It was a good try and we had ’em, ’till we folded like a wet tent in the 4th. 1- 3. Fight On!

    • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

Darnold is in the same boat as Carson Palmer was

      • Ray

Wow. I think you are right. I never thought about that. And Browne just got pushed overboard.

      • marvgoux1

With better coaching Darnold is Heisman material.

        • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

          He sure is

          • Pac12 fan

Unfortunately, losing has become acceptable for USC football fans! We have become irrelevant on the National scene .

  • Billy Jean

    When does hockey season start?

    • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

      October 8th I think

  • John Cracker

USC will be lucky if it wins four games this year.

    • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

4-5,Darnold may win a couple more in spite of this coaching staff

    • marvgoux1

This team will beat f uuucla. Darnold is already better than Rosen.

      • SucKiffin

Maybe next year. Not at RoseBowl by then SC will be waving white flag hell by next week

        • marvgoux1

I hope the team doesn’t collapse now.

          • Clay Russell

That’s not what I saw, Marv. This is one to build on and I’m as confident as I’ve been in some time. I have a feeling that things are going to flip and the defense is going to start putting the offense under pressure instead of the other way around.

          • marvgoux1

I still can’t believe we lost. Things seemed so positive and then it all slipped away in the 4th quarter.

          • JustOwns

            It’s Hillary’s fault.

          • Clay Russell

Our last drive shouldn’t have started with a pass. Once again we were able to get what we wanted on the ground and on a crucial, game salting drive, we threw on first down.

      • https://www.facebook.com/charles.bucket.3 Charlie Bucket

i have to say, the wolfman was right on about Darnold, after seeing him play, it’s boggling Hell-TON din’t start him in game one. he’s got a super quick release and quick feet. Hell-TON is a Dummy.

        • JustOwns

          To bad Browne was loyal.

          • marvgoux1

Yes he was a sap. 4 years ago he was rated better than Goff and now he’s a career bench warmer.

        • marvgoux1

Rosen needs to watch Darnold and step up his game.

          • https://www.facebook.com/charles.bucket.3 Charlie Bucket

            (off the record, i agree)

            #OnTheRecordRosenIsHeismanMaterial

          • JBKayak

Darnold is a football Animal. Does he play drums too

  • John Cracker

    Go Dodgers!!!!

  • marvgoux1

I am in shock we blew a sure win.

    • USCFOOTBALLISDEAD

      Shock?

      • marvgoux1

Yes I thought we would shut them down once we took the lead.

        • Saul Goodman

And what could have made you think our D was going to stop anything?

          • marvgoux1

            Memories of days past….

        • Jack B

Dark days. Gomerville sucks. Our team knows it doesn’t have staying power.

We can’t stop anyone decent unless it’s in spurts. The Utah game is textbook for any school to use to beat us. Wear us out. Be balanced. Adjust. Pick on Biggie. Run it up the gut. USC DBs are average. Only Adoree’s a stud and he can’t do it all. The rest of SC’s D is totally mid-major.

          • marvgoux1

I kept worrying that when Utah had the ball for 12 minutes in the first quarter they would wear our defense down. Then when we took that lead I thought the defense would be pumped up and dominate them. But no….

    • JustOwns

Not that sure by the final score. Blame it on Hillary.

      • docskip

Loss of Noah Jefferson has been huge. It’s killed our rush defense and pass rush. Hopefully he will be back

        • JustOwns

Sounds like an excuses, excuses, excuse routine.

  • Jack B

USC should make an exception for loyal soldier Browne and let him transfer tonight because he’ll never see the field again for USC unless it’s total garbage time.

    • USC jojo

Unfortunately, garbage time means USC is getting blown out. Urgh!

    • BearBryant3

And they would have to be ahead for that to happen.

    • 88 Straight

Except Darnold is going to take some hits running the ball. Could get hurt. Had a nice game. Thought Rodgers and Mitchell were both better than Juju. Two big penalties cost you. The one by Mama that you mentioned and the PI on Marshall on Utah’s last drive on 3rd and 10 from their own 6. SC couldn’t finish.

Will probably be our turn tomorrow. Stanford has owned us and it hasn’t been close.

      • marvgoux1

He took quite a hit on that TD run. He apparently hasn’t been coached on how to slide either.

        • JustOwns

Goux, in HS Darnold ran over a lot of tacklers. He loved contact.

      • Jack B

All QBs who can run take hits. Most stay healthy. Darnold’s gonna be a god one. I feel bad for Browne because Gomer should have been straight with him and started Darnold right off, giving Browne the shot to be somewhere else.

Would just as soon play our 3rd string QB as Browne. He’ such big step down from Darnold, what difference would it make?

  • Pac12 fan

Pendergast hasnt done much better than Wilcox

    • Arturo

He has less to work with.

      • BearBryant3

        BS!

        • Arturo

No D linemen and inexperienced LBs.

          • marvgoux1

            Could have used Masina.

          • Arturo

            Sad, but true.

    • marvgoux1

Did we have 11 out there for extra points?

      • USC jojo

He blitzes. Hutchings blitzed many times then would stop at the line of scrimmage. What the hell is that about? That’s like playing with 10 men.

        • jim

That’s not a blitz when you stop at the LOS.

    • jim

His defense is starting to look like Wilcox’s defense. I thought this was going to be a more attacking defense. It looks a lot like what we had before…….a lot of bull rushing, no stunts or loops. I didn’t see a lot of pressure on that passer tonight.

  • Clay Russell

At least we see what the offense is supposed to look like. Darnold is the real deal and he should’ve been the starter sooner.

Terrible play call on the 3rd and 5 with the pass to Shuster. The play itself looked jumbled and had limited options. Why not try a QB draw with your mobile QB instead of whatever that was? This punt was more justifiable than the one last week, but I don’t think you had any reason to believe you could put the game in the hands of this defense tonight.

Speaking of this defense, if Gustin can develop his hands and feet he could be all world. If he can add some finesse to what he has he’ll be a monster. Love Cam’s instincts and toughness, wish he had more speed. The D-Line gets no pressure whatsoever on the QB and we don’t blitz well either. Hutchings and Nwosu are both liabilities to me and #27 needs a lot of work. We HAVE to start getting some D-Linemen out of Texas and the south.

Disappointing loss, but I’m glad to see the offense and future finally arrive in Sam Darnold. There are at least some really good things we can take from this loss unlike the previous two. I look forward to seeing more improvement next week.

    • Arturo

Nwosu plays well. Hutchings is serviceable

      • Clay Russell

Totally disagree. Neither of them are playmakers and their positions are supposed to make plays in this defense.

        • Arturo

They don’t really have anyone else. Nwosu was a Safety/Linebacker Hybrid and is now playing out of position as a stand up DE.

          • Clay Russell

Maybe that explains why I don’t like what I see from him. If like to see an upgrade.

        • Fight On Forever!!

Nwosu forced the fumble that Adoree picked up and got a sack tonight. He’s a good player.

          • Arturo

First year starting, he’s only gonna get better.

          • Clay Russell

He’s not an instinctual football player (see Cam Smith) and that’s why you rarely hear his name relative to how much he plays.

    • Paul

Good, yes. The guy across town is the real deal.

And that bullshit arm in motion call in the first half was even worse than Tom Brady v. the Raiders. Gifted you a TD…

      • Clay Russell

There wasn’t enough to overturn the call on the field.

    • Larry Harris

If I am not mistaken #27 is LaBonty a walk-on Frosh safety. I gave up on him after his 2nd screw-up in the game (this was his1st appearance in a USC uniform. We can’t be that starved for talent.

      • Clay Russell

Yeah, that guy didn’t seem like he belonged on the field. I’m wondering if Ykili Ross is ever going to play.

  • Trojan1967

Darnold was great. He generally made good decisions, and as noted before, he was decisive. He also looks like he will be a real leader that will inspire his team. Unfortunately, the coaching staff cannot lead and I see no reason to believe they ever will.

  • Xavier Right

Wow just as I said don’t sleep on this kid Troy Williams’s totally shredded our D especially in the LB spots ,My Hat’s off to USC NEW OB First thing they got RT!!!!!¡!

    • CardinalnGold

The kid had time to hard boiled an egg back there in that pocket during the last drive. Of course he shredded us. Those slant passes he threw in traffic were nice though.

      • Xavier Right

Man USC just put him up household name w/Uath fans

    You mean LOSE ON.

We will still beat UCLA. How many NC’s have you won? Oh that’s right ZERO! GOOD LUCK WITH STANFORD. WE WILL SEE YOU IN NOVEMBER!!

      • JustOwns

        bozo u hasn’t won FB NC’s. They were voted NC’s – monopoly $$$ NC’s as it were.

  • Arturo

Two down linemen is killing the D.

    • JustOwns

Utah sure missed what’s his name.

      #where’sbiggie?

  • Jack B

We were really killed by the life-altering Damian Mama penalty. Might have won comfortably if that huge 30+ yd crucial gain hadn’t been erased. SC can’t overcome stuff like that.

    • Arturo

That play really wasn’t his fault though.

      • Clay Russell

He ran down the field and fell down. He didn’t even block anyone.

        • Arturo

It was a run pass option. He missed the block but it wasn’t some bonehead penalty.

          • Clay Russell

I know, he just looked bad on the play and the penalty killed us. If it was a Stanford lineman it wouldn’t have been called.

          • Arturo

            You’re right. Stinks.

        • marvgoux1

Wasn’t that same penalty called in the Alabama game before the roof fell in?

          • Clay Russell

It’s going to happen with this offense if the ref is looking for it.

    • marvgoux1

And the early fumbles when we were going to score.

      • Arturo

Game shouldn’t have been that close.

      • Clay Russell

Just a freak occurrence and you can add the fumble we should’ve recovered in the end zone. We played really well in some respects and I’m encouraged.

    • docskip

Hard to win on road in Pac penalties are always gonna go against you. Helton can’t put game in refs hands on road. Just no excuse to punt. He has to go soon but can’t fire him now. Just a sad situation

    • Fight On Forever!!

Many teams run plays like that and the penalty is never called. Big Ol’ Mama moved faster than I’ve ever seen him and was about 5 yards down field though!

      • Jack B

Still no excuse. Should be coached to not be in the gray area, when it can go against you if the wrong ref is looking. These things happen to crap teams. Bad penalties at crucial times. If SC was good, they would overcome and not allow a 95 yd drive over 5 mins to end it.

Mediocre-to-poor coaching (in all phases) combined with over-rated talent and some pretty big holes is tough to overcome which is why we’ll be lucky to make a bowl. We didn’t give it to UTAH. They flat out drilled us in the 4th.

I just hope Gomer doesn’t come out and spew about how much we improved. I’m sure he will though. He has no alternative. Anyway, the cat’s out of the bag. Gonna lose several more games before things get better. At least the mystery is over. You can drill USC’s D when it counts, both on the ground and with 1,000 slant passes.

Winning teams make the stop when they need it, & winning teams make the yard when they need it. USC has not been able to do either for 3 years. Winning coaches have a feel for the game and their team. Since being named head coach CH has demonstrated neither. I am not in favor of firing coaches wily nily , but even if he improves CH will never be up to the realistic expectations (top 10 program) that a program like USC should aspire to. Regardless of how the rest of the season plays out, LS needs to bring in his own guy–a proven winner . Pains me to say it, but CH doesn’t have what it takes.

    • marvgoux1

This game was in the palm of his hand!

    • Trojan1967

Absolutely right. The best coaches prepare teams to compete, to play as a team, and to be disciplined and to get the best out of their players. This boils down to being able to lead. He is not at that level for a top program.

  • David V. Johnson

Unbelievable mistake by Helton to punt. Jack Jones needs to play and move Biggie to safety where he belongs

        • marvgoux1

          And Cal…

  • Fight On Forever!!

Pendergast adjusted to the run, committing more guys to the box, but he continued to play man to man in the 4th and the Utah OC cleared out the middle linebacker rolling the RB out of the backfield and hitting a slant behind him time and time again.

USC just can’t get pressure with only their D Line. They just don’t have any pass rush moves and just try to bull rush all the time.

Oh and Wolf Helton punted inside the 40 because USC was trying to protect a lead. Pin the opponent deep and hope your doesn’t let them go 90+ yards down the field. Biggie killed that hope with the PI. Penalties once again killed USC.

    • Clay Russell

Some of the D-linemen were just pretending to bull rush, but were actually taking plays off.

      • Arturo

        They were gassed.

        • Clay Russell

Stopped getting gashed and you’ll get a blow.

          • Arturo

True. Still, like to know how many snaps Stevie and Rasheem played. Too many for a DL.

          • Clay Russell

I agree too many snaps. We’ve been so distracted by all the unexpected problems that we’ve forgotten about the problems we did expect like D-Line talent and depth.

          • marvgoux1

Did you see the time of possession in just the first quarter?

          • Clay Russell

Yeah, but the 3 fumbles helped distort the TOP.

  • Isaiahdolan

So what is Helton’s record against ranked teams?

  • http://johnwolcottlaw.com john wolcott

Good ball game. Very entertaining. With Darnold the offense is going to score points. But they will have to with that porous SC defensive line.

Still, a much improved product after the Stanford embarrassment.

    • Sandy Underpants

Uhhhhhhhh… this was a 40 point blow out in USC’s favor, if they didn’t completely stink it up. This was a worse loss than Stanford, at least we can believe that Stanford is good. Utah isn’t.

  • Arturo

Chip Kelley will be available soon as the Niners stink.

    • Sam Bam

He would be a breath of fresh air.
I would welcome Chip Kelly on the Tarmac!

      • Arturo

So would all of the recruits in fertile So Cal. They’d be lining up to sign up.

        • Sam Bam

Yeah they would. Helton has lost EVERY MEANINGFUL GAME AS HEAD COACH…

          Stanford-Loss
          Wisconsin-Loss
          Alabama-Loss
          Stanford-Loss
          Utah-Loss

He is not a head coach

          • Arturo

            Don’t remind me.

Sad to admit that he isn’t.

          • Sam Bam

I hope Lynn Swann reminds Clay Helton of that list.

          • Arturo

Maybe, after seeing the list, he will resign.

            Wishful thinking.

          • Sam Bam

That would be the honorable thing to do.

          • marvgoux1

Helton is like Craig Fertig, a nice guy but not a head coach.

          • Sam Bam

            RIP…
But very true. Fresno St, maybe San Jose St or San Diego St, but not USC.

          • gotroy22

Helton needs to Resign With Honor. Long Beach Poly could hire him to fix their offense.

          • Ray

Don’t forget Notre Dame and Oregon. Sure he wasn’t the “official” head coach, but I bet he was the “official” head coach already in Haden’s mind.

          • Sam Bam

            Very true.

          • jim

He beat Utah. UCLA too but they folded at the end of the year.

    • Sandy Underpants

Chip Kelly’s a loser. Don’t you people get it, yet– USC doesn’t need another damn loser.

      • Sam Bam

Is he a loser in college?
        College…Where he ruled the Pac12.

        • Sandy Underpants

He ruled the Pac-12?!?!? What a god-like immortal. The vaunted Pac-12 / conference of national champions!!! How many bowl wins did he have? One-Pete Rose Bowl championship over the mighty Badgers who ruled the Big-12 and a Siesta Bowl over K-State. Big winnah (sarcasm).

          • Sam Bam

He won a Rose Bowl, played for another, and was a field goal away from winning the National Championship game against Auburn. I couldn’t stand the SOB, BUT right about now he looks like steak to our TV dinner.

That spells proven winner in college.

          • Sam Bam

He never played KSTATE. And he beat a tough Russell Wilson led Wisconsin. Just sayin.

          • Sandy Underpants

On his Wiki page it says Oregon beat Kstate at the Siesta Bowl in 2013 and Chip was head coach. I don’t know. I just know Chip didn’t win anything and everyone thinks he was dynastic. 200 regular season wins in 4 years is impressive, but nothing to show for it but post season losses. Close losses, but nothing can change the L.

          • Sam Bam

I believe u. I just don’t remember that. But not only did Oregon put up points, they hit teams in the mouth with a physical style of play. The other teams knew the run was coming and still couldnt stop it. Give him Southern California’s and/or the West to recruit and he’ll have USC on track.

          • Sandy Underpants

As much as I want to see SC win again, I don’t want to see them sell their soul to a gimmick offense, and the innovator of icon sign board sideline play calling, and never winning the big ones. Being the perennial bridesmaid in big games, is worse than being a bad team. At least no one notices bad teams. Everybody still laughs at the old Buffalo Bills 4-Pete superbowl loss run.

          • Sam Bam

You have to realize that he did all of that at Oregon, not USC or Ohio St. He deserves some credit and the kids that all seen him do that at Oregon will want to play for him. He took Oregon to the next level and left the Mike Bellotti Era in the dust. Hardly resembles the Buffalo Bills. USC would give him unlimited resources. He’s not my first choice, but I would be very fine considering the state of the program.

  • Paul

What happens is…you still lose! Lol.

  • Fight On Forever!!

I thought Pendergast ran a 5-2 defense? Where the hell were the 5 down lineman on all those 4th and 1’s Utah converted?!

The linebackers weren’t even within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage most of the time! If the D Line can’t hold up then they gotta cut the OL at the legs and create a pile.

Supposedly this was supposed to be a gap penetrating defense but there was always a gap for the RB to squeeze through!

    • marvgoux1

He flipped it to a 2-5.

    • Arturo

      Say that.

  • Old Trojans never die

Well call me a sunshine pumper and a homer, but that was a dirty loss. Watching the refs mark the ball became a sport in cheating. Calling interference on a ball that wasn’t catchable and the receiver fell down was unfair and gave the home team an unearned first down.
Uncalled holding is always something, but an obvious illegal block in the back has to be called. Too many gift spots from the refs moved the ball up field without merit.
However the defense had several chances to stop the run and didn’t.

    • Independent_George

      You’re a pumper.

Refs did not lose this game. It was lost when Clay Helton accepted the head coaching job.

      • Sam Bam

        No defense
        4 fumbles

        And…..no defense.

        • Arturo

          Not enough DL.

          • Sam Bam

Even with Noah Jefferson in the lineup we would’ve had no pass rush. That QB had all day to throw. I think he was doing his taxes during one play.

          • Arturo

            and he got audited.

          • Sam Bam

            Yeah!

  • Independent_George

Clancy is amid-level DC. No better than Wilcox. No worse. Glad USC refused to give him the three year contract he offered.

Clay is a nice guy, probably a wonderful father and husband and citizen. But as a football coach he is a loser. You know what Lombardi said about nice guys and football.

    • marvgoux1

He’ll make a nice high school coach.

      • Ted

At this point, I’d think Helton’s trOJans would have a hard time beating Narbonne, LA high or Hawkins of Los Angeles city section high school teams…

Utah 5 for 5 on 4th down. WHY ? The Utes ran the same play on 4th and 1 late in the 4th quarter and made two game saving first downs. The Trojan Defensive Coordinator had three down lineman with # 45 standing at attention. The two inside LB”s were standing 5 yards downfield..The rest of the defense was downfield lined up soft. What in the H#ll were you thinking, Pendergast ??? This is 4th and 1, not 4th and 8. Stack the defensive line with Bulls and STUFF THE DAMN OFF LEFT GUARD RUN. The same play Utah ran on the previous 3 4th and short. IMO. you cost the Trojans a victory.

      No stunts
      No beef up front
      No chance.

      • Sam Bam

BKU has Gustin going head up bull rushing every down. That’s terrible coaching.

  • Lajollaboy

Absolutely unacceptable the way SC lost tonight. No excuses for it except we got out coached in the 4th quarter. There is no way that Utah should have won the game but they did.

Doubt that Helton will survive this season let alone make it back for another one. Nikias and the BOT will have to can him for this train wreck of a mess. I’m sure Lynn Swann is getting tons of angry alumni calls tonight.

    • Jack B

Gomer is a lock to survive 2016. Take it to the bank. Doesn’t matter how bad we do. Nothing will be done until after the season, which hopefully ends without a horrible bowl game that the team doesn’t want to play in.

      • Sandy Underpants

He beat UCLA, and that’s good enough for Pat. I mean SC only does that like 90% of the time, this millennium anyway.

      • Sam Bam

Best case scenario=a new head coach (a proven winner)

Worst case scenario=Helton somehow beats 2 out of 3 with Oregon, Notre Dame and UCLA and quiets the darkness. Holding onto his job for until next season.

        • Sandy Underpants

Oregon and Notre Dame are as good or better than the teams SC has already lost to. Sooooooo, can we get this over with and hire Les Miles already!?!?!

          • Sam Bam

If Ed Orgeron and Dave Aranda are part of that package I will sign off on that while on the Tarmac.

  • Jack B

I’m sure Swann salivates at the thought of running routes on our DBs. He could probably do it now, since all you need are two in your repertoire, the slant and the fade.

  • Pac12 fan

We got beat by would have been the Third string QB at Washington this year.

  • Affholter

This team has checked out for the season.

    • Sandy Underpants

…well now. 2017 should be good. No Bama, right?

  • Xavier Right

The Dogers w /o ;’Vince Scully is like USC last 3yrs w/O A Real Coach !!!!!!!!!

    • Sam Bam

      You mean since Pete left?

      #DamnUPete!

      • realtrojan

And that’s probably around the time JO got his dementia. LOL!!!

        • Sam Bam

          Sorry, but JO?

          • realtrojan

That problematic individual’s ID is JustOwns. LOL!!!

          • Sam Bam

Yes sir. My bad. His old name was “UGLY owns Los Angeles”, but he changed that after the 40-21 beat down.

          • realtrojan

            Yep!

    • Sandy Underpants

Where’s the cut-off? I liked Kiffin as much as the next guy, but any coach that loses his team so badly, probably needs to be lumped into the “not a real coach” category for at least a couple seasons.

      • Xavier Right

So true what’s in the dark shall come to light hole staff knew they were Way over the heads &overzealous ???????

  • I’ve HADENough

I’m starting to miss Lane Kiffin

  • jim

Tom Herman would be my #1 choice. Mike Dantonio would be good also, as would Whittingham. Peterson is out of the running. We missed our chance on him.

    • Sam Bam

I would take Herman and Dantonio today no questions asked.

    • jim

My question is can you hire a great coach with this administration. You can’t go to any of the great coaches and say “this is the way we want you to do it”. They won’t come on board with those kind of restrictions. The great coaches are going to come to you and say to your AD “this is the way that I do it……just stay out of my way….you can take it or leave it”. They’ve earned that right to do some dictating and if you’re smart, you’ll get out of their way and let them do their thing. From a business standpoint, it’s the best decision. When your team is challenging for a national championship, you always come out ahead as far as dollars and cents. It’s a good business decision. Unfortunately, too many of these BOT’s are educational elites who have never had a real job in their life. Political correctness(womens sports and other PC policies) are more important to them than plain old good business practices. They really think that PH was a great success because we won a championship in womens beach volleyball.

  • jim

With the administration we have right now, I doubt that they would even talk to Herman. He’s not mediocre enough.

  • steveg

It appeared to me Clancy did make adjustments, the run game for Utah made them pass more. The fact our guys were gassed came into play, and as usual our DB’s got beat at very inopportune times. Killed us with the slant pass.

  • Isaiahdolan

Our LBs are not slow! It’s just that every team we play is fast. Our D line is not weak. It’s just that every offensive line we play is All American. And on and on and on…

  • Trojan95

Sark and Kif are both better than Gomer. SMDH this ship has sunk fast. Gomer is a poor decision maker. Nice guy. But poor leader. His first few decisions were his worst and set the tone. Bad choices in coaching staff and Darnold is better than Brown and its really not that close.

  • gotroy22

    Same list as last year?

    • Sam Bam

Last year I had John Harbaugh as my #1
