Clay Helton Is No. 1!

Clay Helton’s rocketed to the top spot on coacheshotseat.com. Does anyone remember USC was picked second in the Pac-12 South in the preseason media poll and received the second-most votes to win the conference title game?

  1. I just spent 45 minutes of my lunch hour listening to the Paul Finebaum show. Lots of good talk about LSU football and what their coaching search might look like. Pretty standard talk show fare–but the real entertainment was (were?) the callers. USC fans and probably all other fan bases cannot match the crazy that is the SEC. If you get a few minutes give your self a treat & listen.

    • Lynn Swann is traveling as we speak. Maybe he will have something when he gets back. Im fine with Miles, he would be KING in the Pac. Recruits would say Ucla who?!

      • Recruits already do say ucla Who? We can do much better than Miles, who should have been fired last year and is definitely trending down.

Herman, who was raised in the Simi Valley and was an all-Conference WR at Cal Lutheran and won the Broyles Award in 2014 at OHIO ST, is the dude. If we let him go somewhere else, you’ll know where Nikias’ priorities lie.

  2. If I were Clay Helton I would avoid LAX for a few weeks. All he has to do is get the talent to show what they can do and he’s back a few rows on the hot seat. I do not see him as a long term head coach, but I was wrong about Ed Orgeron ever being a head coach again too.

  3. Gomer’s probably had the worst first month of a season in the history of college football, though Miles and Kelly are right up there. But Miles was already in hot water before the season started and Kelly has enjoyed some success.

Gomer came in with his shiny brand new staff, a nice recruiting class, and generally a lot of optimism. He seemed to have done a lot in the off-season that was positive – that was, until ALA showed us he had really done nothing.

Now, he’s 1-3 and yuk yukking about always seeing improvement. Well, since he finally corrected his QB mistake by starting Darnold at Swann’s request, that’s the only reason for any improvement, Our defense has regressed, if that’s possible.

Good to see Gomer’s seat is as hot as fire. He earned his distinction, and is getting very well paid for it.

    • I’m leaning towards Miles, LSU is responsible for $14.5 mil buyout and he will probably come in at $7 per year for USC. Herman’s buyout is $6 mil, USC has the money, but don’t see them cutting monies to Helton, Houston and Herman. Thats nearing $16 mil. No WAY that happens!

      • That doesn’t change fact that Miles is trending way down and has always seemed a little oily to me. So we compromise with Miles? Not much of a shot in the arm but would be typical USC nowadays.

Someone will get Herman. That’s the team to watch for the future.

        • Miles is what 62, Saban owns the SEC, he wore out is welcome trying to compete with Saben.. Miles would be KING in the Pac conference, how many retreads in the conference have NCs ..Zero! Miles brings name and a great resume to USC if hired .. Career #s 144-55.. What coach in the pac has those numbers, Zero.. Lol.. Miles would chase Mora out of Ca. Miles and the right support staff would build recruiting options in the SEC region heading east, Ca recruits would line up wanting to play for USC and Miles. Proven winner!

          • He’s still trending down though. Glossy numbers were awhile ago. He’d have to be the Lee Iococca of coaches and somehow get reborn. Is not a proven winner in today’s game.

I’m not worried about recruiting. They always line up to come to USC. It’s all the rest of the program issues that are what holds USC back nowadays. We just got beat by a team with a talent disadvantage. Coaching killed us, because our kids played hard – just not smart.

We’ll probably look at Miles if he’s interested in coming out west. I still hope we do better and catch someone who’s headed up and not some old guy who’s just been booted from someplace else.

          • LSU has had top 10 recruiting classes over the last 5 years, and Les Miles still couldn’t get the ball rolling. It’s not the fact he’s in the tough SEC, because they constantly lose games out of conference.

          • Fred, you and I both know he’s had one main problem. Finding quarterbacks. And that is totally amazing considering the talent that is in and around Louisiana/SEC country.

      • ND would pay that. Will be interesting to see if they make a move. They’re in as bad a shape as we are and at ND, there is no ambiguity about the importance of football – as there currently is at USC.

  4. It just shows there are some college presidents who are willing to demand success relative to its capability (like LSU). Unfortunately, we are “stuck” with a stiff who is more than willing to allow USC football to be the laughing stock of the sport. The USC administration ought to write a book on “the fine art of cronyism”.

    • I’m the last person to defend the USC administration, but you are aware USC has fired their last two coaches in September aren’t you?

      • Kiffin fired, Orgeron not given a chance, Sarkisian fired, Helton given the HC job only to flop soundly. Not much of a track record to brag about, is it? And look at the AD’s hired (with their non-experience & non-qualifications other than being jocks). I’d say it is the blind leading the blind.

  5. Helton on the hottest seat basically because of only 3 offensive touchdowns against Power 5 schools despite having the best talent in Pac12. That and bad decison making from the start

  6. There were two polls. One was for major college football programs that have coaching hot seats. The other was for programs that don’t matter with coaching hot seats. Jim Mora was #1.

  7. What major organization makes almost the exact same mistake 3 times over the course of a few years in a high level hiring decision? Kiffin, Sarkisian, and Helton. All were hires with no established record of success in the capacity of HC. You almost would think that the first two failures would have guaranteed that they would choose someone with a clear track record. This now looks comical.

  8. If we actually hired a national search firm , lets hope we never use them again based on what we ended up with

  9. When I saw the comical football staff that Clay Helton, and Steve Sarkisian put together when they were named head coach, that’s when I knew they would both be failures. Helton was so obviously insecure when hie didn’t go after top coordinators, but he rather beg a defensive coach that really didn’t want to be here.

    • I don’t think Helton was insecure, I just don’t think he could attract anyone to be on his staff, he has no gravitas. PC had that, Harbaugh has that, Saben, Meyer, Helton, uh no

  10. Miles is on the downside of his career, and should spend a few years as a DC or something before he goes back to HC job. USC can do much better that Miles.

  11. How soon the annual display of pre-season delusion and cluelessness fade away! It took all of one game this time around…

  12. Why does the ‘contraire’ in me always come out when everybody is piling on to some idea such as Helton being the worst thing to happen to planet earth since the asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs?

Well, the remaining games are all winnable, so I feel the jury is still out on Mr. Helton, and I am willing to wait to the end of the season to pass judgment, unlike apparently 99% of Trojan “fans.”
