USC Morning Buzz: An Ironic Nomination and Keeping Positive

You want irony: USC nominated tailback Justin Davis for Pac-12 offensive player of the week despite the fact Davis did not get a single carry in the fourth quarter against Utah. Maybe this sums up USC’s season. Why USC needed to play Aca’Cedric Ware a series over Davis makes no sense. The Trojans got a field goal.

Above, JuJu Smith-Schuster remains positive on the rest of the season despite the 1-3 start.

  1. Well, of course it’s almost always a good thing to be positive. But it’s very difficult to be that way when Gomer’s record as HC is 1-5 since he took over at the helm. Trust me, folks. Gomer’s definitely not the one to turn around our program. I’m afraid we’ve seen enough of him already to come to that conclusion.

  2. I’m positive about Saturday. I know I will see two teams playing. One will win, of that I am positive.
Now just which team will prevail is a debate waiting to happen. Someone has to tell the coach if it is about the ball, don’t punt.

  3. Now that is what it is all about. Loving college football and having fun.

I had fun watching a very exciting game with Utah, although the ending was deflating. Did anybody else on this blog have fun Friday night or are you all weighed down by your anti-Helton feelings?

    • All weighed down by anti-Gomer feelings. Re-watch the ALA, STAN and UTAH games and you will be too.

  4. I’m positive USC is going to be outcoached in just about every game remaining on the schedule. Is that positive enough for you?

  5. I heard a very interesting take on the XM College football show yesterday regarding the LSU/USC/Herman situation. The host stated that if USC could not make a home run hire, i.e. Herman or another big name, they should bite the bullet and ride the Helton train for another year instead of making another mistake hire. Thoughts?

    • The Hellton train is unable to leave the station at this time due to the ineptitude of many coaches. Hopefully Swanny can resolve this mess.

      • If USC is going to do that then Swann should’ve had the wheels in motion after the Dallas Debacle. I bet that LSU has already made an offer to Herman’s agent.

        • Maybe Swann has already reached out to Herman’s agent! I’m sure Herman and his wife would prefer coming home to cool weather vs. high heat and high humidity! Remember, happy wife = happy life!

    • USC has more money than most schools. Helton will NOT be the HC at USC beyond this season. Fools thinking Miles is not the answer or that he is not a good HC, know nothing about football.

Three names have surfaced as possibles for 2017.

      Ken Pola at Ucla
      Miles
      Kelly

      • Kennedy Polamalu I would not mind because I think he would put together a great staff that can teach and recruit. I think Chip Kelly is heading back to Oregon. The Helfrich deal has about run its course.

        • Pola clearly wants to get back to old-style USC football. His problem is that at ucla, they can’t carry that tune. Never could. That’s not ucla.

Under normal circumstances, I’d say bring Pola back and give him a HC shot. Not now though. Been there, done that with too many unprovens lately and he’s never even been a HC before. Can’t risk it. USC has to aim much higher.

I do like the fact that Pola punched out the Kiffer at USC, but that’s not enough to give him the job – just another USC connected dude training as a HC again. Will we ever stop this BS? Yes. It has to stop now.

          • I was told by a longtime client that Pola has a desire to be a HC. USC would be smart to even entertain him as a possible.

        • Polamalu knows USC football better than anyone out there, from a players, and coaching perspective. He has no ego, and would allow his coordinators to coordinate. And not to mention, he’s always been a top recruiter. The problem with Polamalu, is that he doesn’t look like that administration wants him to look like…wink wink.

          • I’ve seen it all now Fred. You’re actually endorsing another USC retread, a guy who “gets USC” and hasn’t ever been a HC before.

No wonder USC can’t get out of its own way. We’re in a lot worse trouble than I thought if you think USC should try for USC inbred #4 in a row. The Curse of Carroll is obviously real and alive in the USC admin and fan base!

          • Don’t get me wrong, Jack, because Polamalu wouldn’t be my first choice, but he would certainly be on my list.

          • So you would actually stoop to take another USC retread with no HCing experience? I’m still shocked. People run around here constantly criticizing USC’s hires yet confusion still obviously reigns if a guy like Pola could even get considered.

Pola has one good game against Stanford, still loses because his running game blows, and suddenly you say you’d put him on your list. You must admit, that’s pretty weird and exactly the type of thinking that has got USC into the horrible mess it’s in.

If we don’t go after and land the super big fish this time, it won’t surprise me actually. USC doesn’t travel that way anymore. We make silly decisions and wonder why we can’t take them back six months later. Go Nikias! Sign up another lackey!

    • USC has to decide what it wants the future of the football program to be. If mediocrity is okay, keep Gomer until the school is forced through lack of fan support to make a change. Possible hire would then be another on-the-job trainee, USC’s tired MO since Carroll.

If USC wants to remain an elite 5 program of all time, it must take steps now to get aligned for Herman or another huge name. Absent that commitment, USC should just stick with Gomer.

Currently, USC football is all about being satisfied with unqualified Gomer-types. Until that changes, why ditch Gomer? We would just end up with another mediocre coach.

However, if Swann is truly committed to a return to power, begin working immed on bringing in the very best at any cost, no exceptions based on “he gets SC”, etc.

      • Agreed 100%. I think your right on the money when you stated that this is all up to Nikias and the BOT, not so much Swann.

  6. It’s almost as if Pat Haden handed the keys to the football program to a 10 year old , that wants to play big boy coach. If Justin Davis, and JuJu Smith are your strongest players, then you get them the ball, and don’t care if the opponent knows it. The Trojans offensive linemen are not conditioned for a no huddle, fast pace offensive, they are built to play smash mouth football. So stop shoving the other nonsense down their throats.

    • Wow you naild it!!!! Watching Stanford & UTAH huddle UP WRISTS BAN CHECK & REGROUP w/linesman ABLE, TOO GET BLOWS and start ball movement was better ????? I’m I rt

  7. Here’s more positive news;

The Peristyle is reporting EJ’s tranfer has nothing to do with home sickness and Steven Carr has been looking around and his momma is fine with it as long as he stays close to home, oh and #1n6Helton is still #ClownU HC… .

    #Justamessenger

    • Here’s a message, You lost to Stanford again. Ucla is 2-2 and will probably win 4-5 games. Rosen is a weak suck!

      • Oh 63 the 1 – 3 record and team that quits on you guys has you all kinds of cray..cray… you get ASU, COL, AZ, CAL then the heavy lifting towards the end

what do you see, #honestly oh and #1n6Helton will still be your HC??

        • I hear the bruins are selling pieces of sod in the Johnnie Morton Corner of the Rose Bowl to raise $ for Mora’s contract extension. Hopefully The Chimp never leaves because it’s so fun watching you little gutties lose to every good team you ever play.

          #uclaisunrankedyetAGAIN!

        • Let me guess, in your next post you will be telling us that Mora is telling everyone he turned down LSU to stay at UCLA.

      • I just type “Clown College” in Google and I get all kinds of news… .

        “Clown College” – ESPN

        • How about typing in, “Let me know when UCLA wins a big game”, and you’ll find nothing, because UCLA is allergic to winning big games. It’s in your DNA.

          • What big game do you want to talk about… .pick any of your last 4 seasons #ClownU should have plenty given the fact #sanctions have came and gone, “big games” how about you win another game this year.. .lol

            #illwait

          • Let’s see. Last year the winner of the SC-UCLA wins the south and goes to the Pac-12 Title game. Result…SC 40-21 with an interim coach. 2014. UCLA-Stanford. UCLA spits the bit and gets freight trained by Stanford 31-7 at the Rose Bowl with the Pac-12 South title on the line. 2013. UCLA-ASU. ASU wins at the Rose Bowl and goes to the Pac-12 title game. By my tally, it is USC 1-0 over the gutty little ones in big games in recent memory. We won’t even talk about the last time you went to the Rose Bowl, you were probably still in diapers.

          • Lol.. .whaaaaaaaat 1 – 0, silly #trogan UCLA won the south in 2012 remember you remember the year Matty “Ice” was put on Ice hahaha and yes we loss to STA 27 – 24 in the pac12 CG so how are you 1 – 0 over #UCLA and the last time you went to the RB was the last time your then HC won anything with #ClownU, now and forever you will remember him as #3:14AM-LAX #BAM52-6 #TrueNattyChamp LANE “MOTHER FU…IN” KIFFIN #Goat

            #Sillyrahrah

          • Yeah, you LOST to Stanford. How about 50-0…66-19…and the nine straight butt kicking Stanford has given you? Again, like Finebaum stated, “Let me know when UCLA wins a big game.”

  8. Uncle Wolfman does #ClownU still have the $8 million the rah rahs were claiming they had for the new HC.. .

Why is Abraham saying #ClownU lost in true #ClownU form, what does that mean, Hyde just said #ClownU deserved to lose what is going on??

    #Dumpsterfire

  9. IT’S OFFICIAL!!!!!
Helton is #1 in this weeks
    COACHES ON THE HOT SEAT!!!
Is that keeping it positive enough for you?

  10. Good coaches don’t always come wrapped in winning record programs, sometimes school limitations prevent a coach from winning. Brian Kelly is a perfect example at Notre Dame, which is one of the reasons why Urban Myer refused to go there prior to going to Florida.

  11. It took 24 hours and a UCLA heartbreaking loss (misery loves company) to get over what happened in Utah. The positive that emerged after the anger subsided was Sam Darnold. Man that kid can sling the rock!
