USC Morning Buzz: The Schedule Gets Easier But Is That Good?

darnold-utah-2USC should be favored for the next four games (Arizona State, Colorado, Arizona, Cal). But in my analysis today, I write about the double-edged sword facing Clay Helton in these games.

Excerpt: “Saturday’s game against Arizona State starts a period of must-win games to salvage the season, make a bowl and ease talk about Helton’s future. Because if USC loses to any underdog, it could get even uglier for Helton, a nice guy who sometimes seems unequipped to deal with the nasty atmosphere that surrounds the program after a loss.”

  1. Is it still a secret that this is already a lost season? My imagination is already in postseason with Gomer gone and Herman or another REAL head coach in. BUT…!!! It’d still be great to see us squeak by SUCLA and Domers in any way we can before the season’s over, even though I might be asking way too much of Gomer to do it!

  2. On a positive note Kessler had a good first start in the NFL. ESPN has an article on how his teammates are giving him props for great effort. Scott must have overlooked that on Sunday.

      • Yeah but that is the reality of the 49ers’ in 2016 and that fraud has been Kapernik’s racial ‘martyr’ idiocy is pounding what is left of that team’s unity.

        • Do you not see innocent black males with their hands in the air being executed by police! That is what these peaceful protests are about.. .or do you find police killing people with no threat justifiable?

    • Watched that whole game, after an embarrassing and disastrous first drive, Cody played very well. I was waiting for SW to backtrack on his Hue Jackson “Trust Me on This One” criticism shortly after the draft.

  3. But does it really get “easier?” A couple of those games seem to be draws this year. And who knows about the teams that are true “underdogs?” It is the Pac12 after all.

  4. Although on paper these games look like a cakewalk, I don’t think they are. Colorado could be a trap game. (As if the Trojans aren’t already trapped)
Helton has to get the taste of blood in his mouth and learn to like going for a win or his time in the sun is over.

  5. Let’s hurry up and try to win some games before the players give up on the clown car of coaches.

  6. The troll grammar police was out in force last night, I was given a ticket. Lol.

Anyway, anything is possible these next 8 games. We can hope for the best but, I highly doubt, that we win the games we should win. The word from my intel is, sweeping changes will happen soon. The intel has never given me wrong info. Sit back and just watch, 3-maybe a 4 win season for the last time. The future of USC will be brighter than ever. ✌

    • CowPolyFan3.0 even brings back his emoticons from his violently psychotic USC 55 sock puppet days!✌

      • I’m not a doctor (I just play one on this site) but I think his two week absence was a combination of the Bama loss and doctors tinkering with his medication doses.

        • You would think CowPolyFan3.0 would be as giddy as a school girl after his Mustangs mens soccer team upset #7 ranked UCLA Friday.

  7. I just talked to a friend of mine. There is a rumor circulating that someone has hired an banner to be flown over the Coliseum on Saturday saying…Thanks Pat!

  8. Let’s win out!

I foresee some real shootouts with USC’s porous D and talented O, especially now that Darnold’s in, as he always should have been.

While we’re stuck with that aggravating Gomer, maybe we’ll get lucky in 2017 and have a heavyweight HC at the wheel. I doubt it though and am all in favor of the Thanks Pat! banner on Saturday. Until Nikias starts to take the FB tradition more seriously, we’ll be stuck in the new mediocrity which has become acceptable at USC.

  9. I haven’t heard Helton blame someone else for the teams problems, he stands there and takes it. How do you become equipped to deal with this mess unless you go through it. Never agreed with the hire but what is everyone going to say if the team gets better? I have decided to be patient, hate the losses and enjoy the wins, and hope USC can pull itself out of the Nikias/Haden pit it is in right now. Swann, I hope, is his own man and will stand up for the football program.

  10. Now that a few other top football programs will be searching for HC replacements, we will probably see the consistency that makes a USC fan want to puke. That is watching these other programs hire experienced-successful named coaches and paying their price… and then watch AD Lynn Swann find some assistant coach stiff that has USC ties, to continue Max Nikias wonderful legacy of destroying a once proud football program. You might say you can “read this like a book” in what is a good chance in happening. It wouldn’t shock me to see Nikias debating how he can justify keeping Helton on for another few years. You see, Max will want to continue honoring his boy Pat Haden’s splendid choice in hiring Helton.

  11. In my opinion Helton has to win 5 of his next 8 to be Bowl eligible and keep his job. That looks like a stretch with the games we have in front of us. This may be the beginning to the end. This is not just about this season, it goes back to last year’s finish. He’s 1-5 with ALL 5 losses to ranked opponents. Normally we would say its early and give him time, but with the talent he’s inherited it just magnifies the poor play/coaching. Lynn Swann is covering all the angles or all the numbers and details. These next 4 games were considered the soft part of the schedule and are now “must win” games. I don’t see any cupcakes and November will be dark and cold with @Washington, Oregon, @UCLA and Notre Dame. Picture the hourglass slowly but surely being emptied. We’ve barely found a QB, Darnolds definitely the future (possible heisman) of USC, but Helton may not last this month with losses against teams he is supposed to beat.

  12. Wolf never ceases to amaze me. Once I think he can’t say anything dumber, he comes up with this……

“Sam Darnold, who looks better than Matt Barkley or for that matter, Matt Leinart, in their first college starts.”

  13. I think Lockett did OK held his own w/ the Coaching Staff sacred of there lifeline at SC there’s been quite blitz going on with w/switching & moving players around looking for change their in survival mode !

  14. You guys need to win all 4 of those games because I’m having a hard time seeing 2 wins in the final 4 games. I can see it now, the Notre Dame game will be for bowl eligibility. And that’s your best case scenario.

  15. ASU & CAL are putting up pts like crazy, & COL has improved a lot putting up a fight at Michigan and winning at ORE. Winning all of the next 4 games won’t be easy.
