Clancy Pendergast Is Not Pleased With Team Depth

If you thought NCAA sanctions and were over and having 80 players on scholarship meant USC is back to normal, think again. Defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast complained that the depth is the same as in 2013, when USC often used about 50 players a game.

“I don’t see where the depth is any different than the last time I was here,” Pendergast said.

UPDATED: Just to see if Pendergast is correct, USC suited up 44 scholarship players against Utah State in 2013. The Trojans used 53 scholarship players against Utah last week but suited up nearly 65.

  1. The team is 1 and 3. The defense has looked bad and had some horrendous lapses. Their is absolutely nothing CP can say that won’t sound like an excuse or rationalization— no matter how true the statement might be. His, and all other coaches only recourse is to repeat the same coach speak every time they are asked a question—“We will continue to work hard and we will get better”. Until the team wins nothing is going to satisfy the fans.

      • Exactly! There are depth issues and experience issues too. You have young guys playing who have yet to be developed. Many of these kids should not be playing yet, but they have no real choice.

  2. That’s Coach speak for “we are a work in progress!”
We’re supposed to be satisfied with that? End the experiment soon!

  3. If depth on the defensive side of the ball is still an issue then why is Helton insistent on running an up tempo offense? Wait, don’t answer that. Also, when you’re bringing in 5-7 receivers per class that tends to deplete depth on the front 7. Its not that hard to figure out.

  4. Lack of depth? I guess if you don’t lose players to rape charges and homesickness and a few injuries due to poor conditioning maybe the depth wouldn’t be an issue.
To be honest there are plenty of walk ons who would love to learn from a top notch coach such as yourself.
Why is this year’s reality making me sound like a troll?

    • Thank you for pointing that out because that certain fact is all his fault. What big time defensive recruit wants to play at USC when the DC is sitting home on his @** instead of on the road recruiting players?

  5. HAWR-HAWR!!!

Pendergasp thinks he can slide a comment like that past the WOLFMAN without he gets an immediate Fact Check????

    foolish man.

  6. Clancy is already making up excuses. Get over it and coach. You knew the situation and roster before you signed your contract. This only makes you and your head coach look weaker than you already are.
Attention Clancy: This is not the kind of stuff your Athletic Director wants to hear right now.

      • That’s what I took from his statement. It only makes him look more incompent when he has true freshman on the bench that aren’t redshirting. High profile guys. Harbaugh damn near had a stroke because Murphy didn’t go to Michigan and Betiku had offers from every major program.

    • Sam Bam,
Clancy might be making excuses alright, but the problem doesn’t necessarily come from just the sanctions. It was the recruitment of overloading the offense and not the defense. Kiffin, Sarkisian and this last year recruiting that Helton followed thru from Sarkisian’s last recruits, these HC’s are/were more or less ignoring the depth issues of the defensive side. This is why USC needs a PC type who was a defensive oriented HC.

  7. I clearly remember trojan fans clamoring for clancy and getting all wet when he finally signed again with usc. How quickly the honeymoon came to an end. I’ve got to agree that The Clance is not helping himself by making excuses; there are already fans calling for his head.
The Clance has always had a smug “I don’t care what fans think” air about him.

    • The only fans getting all wet over anything were you feeble little gutties who were actually stupid enough to think you might finally beat STAN last Saturday at your rented, run down digs and not fall to 0-9. Then suddenly, we were all laughing as the baby bruins gasped in familiar disbelief when the Johnnie Morton Corner became the scene of yet another horrible ucla crime.

I smugly laughed as Rosen then had another one of his on-the-field nervous breakdowns and tossed yet another fumble towards his own goal line. 22-13; 9-0. Mora remains a ucla hero as he’s better than Pitiful Radio and Singing Slick Rick, but still not good enough to ever win anything. Hah, hah, hah. Thanks for the laugh. It was so smug.

        • It was fantastic to see STAN update the hallowed tradition, with identical results and little gutties crying onto their pizza-stained shirts as they lumbered towards the world’s worst traffic jam.

          • A friend of mine went to the game. His brother in law gave him tickets. His first UCLA game, but not really a fan. He told me “you would have thought more fans would come to see the game when their biggest nemesis is playing” I just laughed.

          • Tell me something I don’t know. Saturday night they were all ripping Mora. But up until that they were anointing him the next Terry Donahue. He’s nowhere near Donahue.

      • I’m going to give you an upvote for your deep level of denial after having been one of the main cheerleaders who clamored for the return of The Clance. Yet, now you change the subject to something that has nothing to do with this blog post because you are still in pain. LOL.
Typical little trolljan. It’s time for your nap to make your wittle headache go away.

        • Anybody reading here knows I stuffed you into the trash as usual. You’re so easy to smugly beat down. How does it feeeeeel loser?

Pain is 50-0, 66-19, 37-21, 13-4 since ’99, 9-0, 22-13 and the Johnnie Morton Corner. Even Gomer owns ucla, 40-21. Amazing.

          • “stuffed you into the trash as usual…” Hilarious! Sounds like you’re stuck in elementary school, Jackie.
I don’t know how, but I always seem to strike a sour nerve with you and then you get all hurt and mad. Apparently, it’s easy.

Stick to the subject and answer all Clancy questions even if the truth hurts. Lol

  8. I’m so sick and tired of this for years now. Just hire a PROVEN COACH. Helton obviously is NOT the guy. He may be nice, but so is my lawyer. USC is already a laughing stock so I don’t see how firing Helton and making a change will make any difference, but the change has to be a home run.

    • speaking of laughing stocks … are you supporting the bundys during the trial?

why don’t you fly up that lawyer of yours to do some pro bono work for them.

you bundy nutjobs need to stick together.

  9. If Clancy Pendergast has a problem with depth, then he should go ask Clay Helton why he has 13 scholarship receivers on the roster. Seven of those roster spots could have gone to defensive linemen, blocking Tight Ends, and a couple of fullbacks.

  10. “If you thought NCAA sanctions and were over and having 80 players on scholarship meant USC is back to normal, think again” ?

    Ya Think ???

Now this is where the criminal sanctions kick in !

The “only” depth is at Offensive Line, Wide Receiver, Tight End on Offense and Defensive Back (There “should” have been Linebacker but that evaporated too ???)

Wayyyyyy too many Freshmen and wayyyyyy too many Sophomores !

This team “should” be rebuilt by the time Sam Darnold moves on to the NFL (After Sam’s junior year) but the question is, how many Top 5 Star and 4 Star recruits will want to join a team that keeps falling short of the College Football Playoffs ?

If things don’t turn around soon this thing could get real ugly !!!
