I feel sorry for these kids. Tons of talent and no good coaches to help them refine their skills. If I was Juju I would ask for a refund!
If I was Juju I would use two hands to catch the football, and also ask for a refund.
JuJu’s gonna find that his stock dropped a lot as he’s more like a third rounder now. No way he’s a good as Robert Woods who’s only a journeyman NFLer with a much better attitude.
No doubt our recruits didn’t bargain for a lot of the crap they signed up for at USC. I would also say many were over-rated coming in, so there was some major deception on both sides.
When USC brings in a truly dominant coach and staff which knows how to evaluate better and coach-up, we’ll stop seeing all these avoidable losses and player problems.
Jack B, your third paragraph hits the nail on the head, especially “Coaching Up”. USC recruits 4 and 5 stars and they leave USC High School 4 and 5 stars.
Lack of consistency in coaching is the issue, not whether or not Helton is a good coach. I am not defending Helton, he is learning on the job, which should not happen at USC. But, turnover throughout USC’s staff every year will stunt the development of any player. I hate to say Wolf is right, but he has often pointed out that the o-line has had a new coach every year. How can you expect development when the players are learning from a new coach(es) each year. Then, tack on that the offensive/defensive philosophies and play calling have changed just as often. That is a recipe for complete confusion for each player, position group, offense and defense, and the team. Lack of consistency at the top has resulted in lack of consistency throughout the program. It will be the hallmark of USC football for the foreseeable future. Calling for Helton’s head after getting blown out by two top ten teams and losing to a good Utah team in the fourth is begging for more of the same.
I agree and get what you are saying. Development of the players has been an issue since the Kiffin hire. His first few classes were still PC’s. In two consecutive coaching changes the system was similar. Kiffin and Sark were offensive minded, yet did not bring in Oline talent. 20 WR vs a area of need on the Oline.
Helton recruited and signed kids that were already on Sarks radar. 2017 would be his actual first signing class..Look at the class, its mostly 3 star players. I know stars are meaningless, but its obvious we suffer in recruiting with the mess that is happening and the lack of talent. Those kids are going elsewhere!
Ya, let’s keep Gomer, the guy who can’t beat anyone who’s any good and is always harping on improvement, even if it’s not happening, like on D. He’s our players’ big buddy and that’s really working out.
I’m sure lots of recruits want to sign up with America’s #1 Hotseat Coach who also opens the season with our #2 QB just because he’s older and might bolt otherwise. Smart move Gomer, also the only coach to call three time-outs in the first six minutes and send out eight players for some plays.
I don’t really think we need any more of the same. Just a wild guess.
Well put. No defense of the entire situation at all, but well put.
USC’S Pac12 Championship hopes (not happening), season, and Clay Helton’s job are on the line Saturday in the Coliseum against Arizona State.
MUST WIN SITUATION.
Effective teams figure out how to make the most of their best players. Smith is currently ranked 159th in the country in receiving yards. His current ranking for yards per reception is – get ready for this – 320th in the country at 10.4 yards per reception.
Let’s see– according to the experts, SC was supposed to lose to Alabama, Stanford and Utah at home.
So what is the big deal here?
The big deal is we have a crappy head coach who will never be very good. You honestly think we would have lost to Utah and Stanford if the Utes and Cardinal were coached by Gomer? Maybe you do.
is this where Jack B starts to cry?
I agree. I don’t see us as favorite anymore going forward.
