    • I don’t think Sean Payton would want the job, period. If Payton gets fired, he’ll obviously be looking, but I think that will be for another NFL job, where he has coached for 20 years.

Lots of big names will be thrown about as USC targets, AS ALWAYS, but that doesn’t mean those targets have any reciprocal interest. 90% of them don’t, like with most schools.

The key difference now is Swann. I do think more coaches will want to work for him than Haden.

      • Once a big boy always a big boy NFL guys are NFL guys , Peyton will never coach in college
he doesn’t need to reinvent himself like Pete did , he already has a Super Bowl

        • I agree, but last year he was in the dumps and his daughter was going to school at SC, I think I even remember reading in the war room that his people reached out to SC. Either way he’s not coming to SC.

  1. I hate to say it, but Clay will be our coach next year. Once again, USC will miss out on the big name coach.

      • Exactly, because he’s way over his head, and he can’t attract any top coordinators. And most importantly, Lynn Swann is not brain dead when it comes to football decisions, unlike Pat Haden.

        • Helton’s contract is nothing more than a year to year deal with incentives. His buyout is low at $2.3. Lynn has been in contact with agents and others to see if they are open to the idea of coaching SC.

          • Every move Pat Haden made regarding the football program was flat out, idiotic , so anything Lynn Swann does will be an improvement.

          • Exactly! The hate for Helton increases every game. Swann will stop the bleeding. His own legacy is at stake and he will not miss that up.

          • You keep forgetting, Lynn Swann IS Pat Haden.
He has the same resume, the same amount of experience (zero) and even belongs to the same country club. How is he suddenly going to figure this out. Not his fault, he just jumped at the big paycheck.
Check with his boss, Fast Max.

          • I pretty sure Lynn Swann is more tuned in to the football world then Pat Haden ever was. And unlike Haden, there are actually rumors of Swann talking to agents. I know they are just rumors, but at least a hiring protocol is being followed.

        • Fred, Clay Helton blew it when he sat on his hands and Dave Aranda was waiting to be signed. Now we’re stuck with Clancy. Self inflicted wounds.

    • Helton will be here until the end of the year regardless. By some miracle if he wins the Pac 12 South, maybe longer.

    • Not trying to be a narcissistic here, but I’m secretly thrilled that Helton will be your coach for years and years. Maybe some of that elite talent will funnel its way up north!

  2. Going the Troy Dunk Pool route is far preferable to being strangled to death by a mediocre coach, which is what Gomer is at best.

Anyone who thinks Gomer is secretly a great coach given time, please chime in. Let’s hear who thinks Gomer could EVER lead USC to a national championship.

All those who think Gomer could be a great USC coach, who are you?

  3. I like this but I’d love to see Helton consulting a magic 8 ball that only has the word punt written on it. He’d be saying it’s 4th and three but we have a cushy 3 point lead what should we do?

  4. President Nikias better beware.

If his complete disregard of the football program ever surpasses more than the strong rumours it is now, he is going to get drawn up as a complete higher education fool.

Only Nikias would find himself in the position as the guy who raised billions of dollars for a university only to be hated and loathed because he didn’t get how important USC football is to the alumni base.

    • But Nikias can claim he is vindicated now that SC is a top15 school in the nation among the Ivy League elite per the Wall Street Journal.

  5. If SC is too gutless(as appears the case) to get a “BIG” name coach, how about Kyle Whittingham @ Utah? He is 96-46 and 9-1 in bowl games. Kyle has those kids believing that they can play.
