USC Face Of The Day

helton-faceHere is Clay Helton’s reaction Wednesday when asked how many Justin Davis will get against Arizona State. Helton’s been asked about Davis’ carries almost every day since the Utah game (including by me Saturday) after the senior had 126 yards in 10 carries but none in the fourth quarter.

  1. I’m upset that Helton is USC’s coach, but I don’t dislike the guy like I did Kiffin and Sark. He seems like a decent guy. I’d feel bad for him if he was coaching somewhere else. Unfortunately, he coaches my favorite FB team and I want somebody else who is actually good at what they were hired to do, coach.

  2. Helton looks like a ucla fan who has just been told the Wall Street Journal thinks USC is a much better school. What’s up little gutties? Can’t compete anymore, even off the field. Ya baby. Bend over bruins.

  3. He looks like a guy who just found out his wife has been banging his best friend for 5 years

  4. Alabama linebacker Tim Williams was arrested this morning by campus police on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a pistol without a permit.

At this rate, Kiffin may have to suit up.

  5. Unitl his team improves and the record improves CH will not get any slack. Nothing he can do or say will erase the dismal year this has been. As HC at a high profile job his every move, expression, and utterance will be viewed through the prism of a very disappointed and unhappy fan base. Winning is the only cure.

        • At least the NEW HC will have ample time to change things.. the new guy will have plenty of resources to turn things around.. mainly time!

    • Justin Davis runs for 126 yds on 10 carries and never touches the ball in the 4th Q. We should just put Gomer out of his misery and leave him alone. He doesn’t have any answers so why ask him questions? Poor guy. I would actually feel sorry for him were USC not paying him so much $ to stink up the joint.

Swann’s a smart, careful, calculating guy. Read anything about him and this rings true his entire life. He’s got a plan for USC football and Gomer’s not in it. This will be revealed on Swann’s own timetable.

      • Hope you are right. I am afraid their are no true good options. Fire him early and school looks foolish again. Wait too long & program spirals downward even further. Many will say make the move now and move on and others will say let the season play out–not really sure where I stand. I do believe that either way , legit coaches will rightly be leery of coming on board.

        • Why be leery? You’ve got to win or you’re fired at USC. Not all schools are like that. You can coach at over half the Pac-12 and not have that problem.

USC looks a lot more foolish having a bad team with all our tradition and resources than we do firing another lackey who should have never been hired in the first place.

This program is headed down. Ever listen to Gomer? He’s a drone! His awe shucks routine would put anyone to sleep. Think USC’s kids have confidence in this guy now? No way.

If you think that USC can’t find a great coach just because of the bad patch we’ve been through since Carroll left, then I guess we should just stay with Gomer and his somnambulistic press conferences which are always filled with stats but nothing worth hearing.

Hopefully Swann’s got his sights on an experienced man big enough for a job that demands winning. Before you know it, it will be Dec and the scramble will be officially on for about 20 coaching vacancies. If USC’s gonna sit tight and let Gomer yuk yuk his way through another off-season, get ready for a laughable 2017 season. We open against WEST MICH on 9/2 in the Coli. Should be a barnburner.

          • I guarantee Lynn Swann will have somebody in place before he gives Clay Helton his walking papers. Because he is probably still in the know, when it comes to football people.

          • Fred, what do you ( or other readers) think of Bob Stoops? I know he has scuffled a bit these past few years. But he has won at a big time program , knows the fertile recruiting states of Texas & OK, has recruited big beef lineman and is well connected in the coaching world. He may have reached the end of the road at OK and a change of scenery just might get him rejuvenated. With his Big 12 territory contacts and the wealth of talent in CA he would be able to reel in top flight recruiting classes. He just might be a home run hire.

          • Bob Stoops can obviously coach, but like Mack Brown, Les Miles , and a few other long term coaches out there. Have always had problems picking quality coordinators , and not knowing when it’s time to replace the burned out ones. That issue recently got Miles fired, and Brown was fired for the exact same reason. Stoops produced some pretty good teams, but his coordinators had everything to do with it.

          • Good points. But outside of Saban & Urban there are no sure fire slam dunk choices. Guys like Harbaugh, Dabo, Jumbo are in the next tier and then guys like Herman, Kelly , Peterson & Shaw are after that. My list is not exhaustive and we can argue each guy. But, my bigger point is everyone has flaws. I don’t think Stoops flaws render him inelgible, but his strengths make him someone to consider.

          • Believe it or not, there are successful nfl coaches out there, that would leave for a job like USC. Money, the quality of life, and job security goes a long way. But only Lynn Swann, and the coaches agents know who they are.

          • The problem is Gomer is in Tier 4-5. I would take any one of the guys you mentioned. We let Petersen slip away. I’m betting Swann could have reeled him in. Herman’s gonna be a big challenge I believe.

I wouldn’t want Stoops. He’s definitely on the downside. When he allowed Venables to switch to CLEM, you knew he was slipping.

We need someone still on the way up. USC’s tough enough as it is. The dude who comes aboard has to still be ascending or at least already great.

Very interesting match-up tomorrow night between Petersen and Shaw. Biggest Pac-12 game of the year. Could be a classic.

          • I wish I could mount a good counter argument, but it would not be very sincere & quite weak. USC dos hav far too much to offer and should be able to attract a quality coach. But does the AD & Admin have the ability to get it done?

  6. Clay Helton knows nothing about running the football, he’s more interested in shotgun formation stuff, and that’s because he’s Steve Sarkisian in disguise, minus the alcohol. And that’s why he has 13 receivers on scholarship, and no blocking Tight Ends, or fullbacks. Helton doesn’t believe in controlling the line of scrimmage with the running game, because he has bigger , better ideas. Just ask his brother, Tyson, he’ll tell you. That fast pace, no huddle offense that Helton uses, fits those fat 320 lb out of shape, offensive linemen just perfect .

  7. He’s not a head ball coach, but I feel sorry for him. He has 2 RS Senior offensive tackles who are under performing each game, a star WR who only catches with one hand, but cries when things don’t go his way. Two LB’S who are out for Sexually assaulting a girl, a pass rush that’s non-existent, etc. He’s definitely under some serious stress.

    • Chad Wheeler has graded out as the Pac-12 best pass blocker.

Teddy Bear Banner, on the other hand . . .

      • George,

I hate to disagree with you since we rarely converse, but Wheeler is not the best pass blocker in the conference, those projections are seriously not up to date. Todd McShay already commented Wheeler and Banner have not played well. They’re stock has dropped.

  8. I wish someone on Clay Helton’s staff would explain to him the benifit s of running the ball, and controlling the line of scrimmage. 1. Clock control 2. Keeping the ball away from your opponent 3. Resting you’re weak defensive line, and overall unit. 4. Taking advantage of the talented running backs on your roster. 5. It’s easier for the out of shape offensive linemen to run block, then it is to pass. 6. It takes pressure off of a first year quarterback. Helton is so obvious to his roster, that he wants to shove his offense down the throat of a team that’s not prepared for it.

  9. Its hard to say bad things about Helton because he’s a nice guy. Fuck that. He’s incompetent and in over his head. Give me Tony Sanchez from UNLV.
