“The difference is they want me here at LSU. I never felt in my heart that they wanted me at USC until the very end, and then (Pat) Haden pulled the plug,” Orgeron told ESPN’s Chris Low. “I thought all the time I was fighting an uphill battle. They always saw me more as a stopgap.”

  2. Sark was an unmitigated disaster & Haden owns that. But I am not ready to say not hiring Coach O as permanent HC was a mistake or a failure by PH. Coach O’s record & results are not sufficient to provide a categorical answer.His stint at Ole Miss did not go well and loss to UCLA was not a good loss. Can he learn from his mistakes and be good or even great HC? Absolutely. But his record doesn’t support a belief that he is a guaranteed slam dunk. I would have been ok with him getting the USC job, but wasn’t upset he didn’t. I was and am pissed that Sark screwed the pooch—he and PH definitely are responsible for that mess. Good luck to Coach O.

      • Lets see Ed O, Sark , Helton or Petersen. I don’t think SC would be any worse off today had they hired Orgeron, do you ? Petersen was never an option, he’s not a puppet, so of the other 3, Orgeron probably wouldn’t have done any worse and SC would at least have some beef on the lines.

        And the loss to ucla was a direct result of Haden telling the team before the game that Ed O wasn’t going to be the head man the following year, just another Haden F up.

      • You are right about the result of the ucla game. Even the LA Times wrote about O not getting the job on the day of game. Sark was signed sealed and delivered before the game.

        You’re saying ucla kicked SC’s fanny because poor old Ed O was depressed and sad? USC got hammered that day because they were flat out inferior (couldn’t touch Hundley with a ten foot pole) and then baby Ed quit on the Trojans, after always saying it was all about the team (until it suddenly wasn’t) and slunk back home with his tail between his legs. Ed O wasn’t good enough and his harmless cookie salvation remedy for his OLs was all you needed to see to figure that out.

  4. Coach ‘O’ is a hold over into the PC ERA; HE is one of those coaches that is a real head coach,has those intangibles inherent in a head coach,probably why Haden didn’t like him,Haden is zero in AD and coach ability.

  5. Let’s face it Ed O was chased off by Pat Haden because too many voices and “insiders” wanted a bigger name coach. Some pointed to his experience in a previous stint as a head coach.
    The problem is Ed O had grown up and was ready for the job. And yes UCLA beat him and the team because he (and the team) knew he was out as head coach. Psychological effects of stupid management are evident in play. Momentum is a bitch to hang on to and a couple of key mistakes can ruin a game.
    The funny part is “insiders” are now lamenting the loss of Ed O.

    • The “insiders” wanted a bigger name coach, yet Haden went and hired mediocre Steve Sarkisian.

      I, too, wanted a bigger name. I just never thought Haden would go lower than Coach O and hire Sark.

      • It was a familiar name he could sell easily, emphasis on easily. Haden would not go beyond Sark because it would entail having to do some actual work.

  7. Oh how short Coach Orgeron’s memory is. Everyone told him the job was his and he totally believed it… until Sark was hired. My money is on LSU hiring a head coach from outside the organization – just don’t do it right before a bowl game.

  8. I always thought O worked really hard to make USC the best he could, as an assistant or HC. He put all he had into it, realized finally he had been played and taken advantage of by Haden, that is why he was pissed off. He is a very good coach and one of the best recruiters in the nation, so I hope he gets the LSU job and the doubters get proven wrong.

    • He was one of the reason’s for PC’s success and he did give SC everything he had only to be screwed over by a limp wristed PC liberal pilfering money from a foundation drunk.

  9. OK. So he lost to UCLA, big deal. He won a bunch and turned the season around. That team did not fold the tent while being undermanned. So, a bunch of people, myself included, believed that the way to go was to offer Coach O the job for one year. If the success carried over – great then we know that it was for real, if not, then you look for a successor, keeping in mind that sanctions were still affecting the program so the “quality” of the successor would be in doubt. For example, would Urban Meyer have chosen SC over OSU when OSU had a wrist slap while SC was practically on life support? Probably not. Similarly, other top quality coaches would wait for the effect of sanctions to be over. What you get are the Sarks of the world, where their employers celebrate when they depart.

    While not totally similar [no sanctions at LSU], if they can’t get their “dream” guy but Coach O has a great year beating Bama in the process, LSU should consider offering him a one year contract to prove that what he did this year is for real [i.e. it’s his team from bowl games right through, spring and summer practices plus the recruiting results].

    • Good luck finding coaches will take a job for one year. How they gonna get staff? How they gonna recruit? They’d be laughed out of the coaching community.

      • Clay Helton appears to be getting lots of verbal commits , and everybody knows he’s on shaky ground. High School coaches know it, and so do the parents. Some Schools can get the players regardless of the present coaches future, and LSU, and USC are two of them.

        • What good are the commits if you can’t hire a staff?

          And USC’s recruiting will definitely be hurt big if Gomer is retained after squeaking USC into a minor bowl.

          • Some Schools will always be bigger than the coach, because high school players are always enamored by them since, forever. I don’t believe schools can recruit themselves, but the onec with deep tradition seem to get the recruits, regardless.

      • Pretty sure the existing staff would’ve stayed on.then as they would now at LSU. Being a coach at either of these schools looks pretty good on the resume so it should be easy to get the next job. It would also show that the coach can work under difficult circumstances, so that is another plus. At the end of the day, it wouldn’t be difficult to get a great staff, most of these coaches know each other and know what they are getting into.

        • Problem is it would be exceptionally easy for other programs to poach staff with multi-year offers. SC’s a great place to coach. I just wouldn’t want to do it on a 1-year K, which is why I don’t believe schools ever operate that way. Gomer was the perfect guy for a 1-year offer. That set-up was never even considered and even his coords got two year buy-outs.

          The next coach at LSU will sign a 4-year monster deal, whoever that is.

  10. Girly Boy, Pat Haden didn’t want a real man running the USC football program, because he wasn’t going to be able to dictate to him . Do you think Ed Orgeron would have called Haden out of the press box to help him dispute a call? That’s why Haden hired the happy go lucky, Steve Sarkisian, because Sarkisian would have done anything his Daddy told him to do, except stop drinking, of course. Whst other Athletic director puts a headset on to listen to coaches call plays ? Girly Boy was such a controlling , spineless little Dweeb that the program continues to suffer his decisions.

  11. I think that if they had hired Coach O, he would still be coach. He was building a program at Mississippi but they didn’t give enough time. He set the foundation for the success that Mississippi has had since but he wasn’t able to enjoy the fruits. He’s learned a lot since. He’s got the experience, personality and charisma to be a great head coach. If LSU doesn’t keep him and if we need a coach and can’t get Herman or someone of that caliber then I would consider hiring Him. His time has come.

  12. If Ed gets passed over at LSU, will he say a couple years later that he knew all along the Tigers didn’t want him as a permanent coach?

    If he knew SC always saw him as a stopgap, why did he blow a gasket when he was told what he knew all along?

  14. I love coach O. I’ve loved him since 2003 maybe 2004, whenever I found out he existed. But he isn’t a candidate for the LSU job and has O chance of getting it.
