Kevin Sumlin Update

When USC hired Steve Sarkisian, a coach I recommended during the search was Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M. People have asked me the past 3 seasons if I still think it would have been a good choice: Of course.

The issue with Sumlin was always about fitting in with Pat Haden and that seemed to be a problem because Sumlin is not a yes man. But it more than likely would have worked out.

By the way, I’ve heard in coaching circles Houston coach Tom Herman would rather have the Texas job than USC because he is already familiar with recruiting in the state.

  1. UPDATE: Herman lost to NAVY, so wonder boy is not as wonderful as people make him out to be

Sumlin has been noted as being a partier just like Sark, and his last three seasons were 8-5, 8-5, and 9-4 – so he’s not that great either

          • When you were talking to someone else you said you wanted to hire Herman before someone else did. I guess now that you’re translating yourself it means wait until the end of the year. Also, if you wanted to wait until the end of the year, why have you been going on and on about firing Helton? Is this the end of the year?

Look, neither one of us wants you to try to respond to any of that so just don’t, it’s ok. But I told you yesterday that you weren’t up for this. If you really are new here then you should’ve asked somebody.

          • That’s not what I said. Reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit is it ?

          • Dude, you’ve gone from fire Helton and hire Herman before someone else gets him to let the year play out and we’ll see at the end of the year. You’re my biotch now. Just kidding, if I really wanted to break your balls I would tell you to go home and get your shine box. So, salud to you.

…now go home and get your shine box.

          • I love Clay Helton. He’s the man. He’ll win 23 National Championships at USC. He may cure cancer and end hunger. All praise Clay Helton !!!!!!!!!!!

          • I’m just showing you your own foolhardy path through this conversation. The first misstep you took was starting with me in the first place. Now you’re just babbling, look at you…

          • I love Clay Helton, he’s our savior.

We all know what happened to Billy Batts

          • Ok, the mercy rule is in effect and you’re done. So are we. You got some potential kid, but you’re not ready for the big leagues yet. See me when your game grows up.

          • Oh yeah… I’ll be sure to tell your girlfriend Fredweena that her knight in shining armor’s horse threw a shoe, you both fell badly and the horse landed on you. I’ll handle it bro, don’t worry about it. I’ll make you look good, but I’m going to have my way with her like I was about to do before you rudely interrupted yesterday.

          • I’ve seen no reason to diverge from the clown and wacko designation, but I’m not disputing any of that.

    • Is this the new rah rah standard that one loss means the prospective coach isn’t fit to coach at 3-3 USC?

  2. If there is a bidding war for Herman? Texas wins hands down. Herman might be the first 10 million dollar per year college football coach.

    • I saw them against Navy. Houston couldn’t stop the option with Navy using their backup QB, Navy lost their best RB during the game and their best LB didn’t play. This is Navy, they don’t recruit 4-5 star players to be back ups to 4-5 star players, but they ( and AF and Army ) play harder than most FBS schools will ever play. Houston made many mistakes, their QB looked average, Navy played better.

  3. Isn’t it about time for Texas A&M to implode as usual? I don’t think it will be long now.

    • Correct Clay. The Aggies don’t play in the Pac 12 so they have to actually play tough games in the SEC conference almost every week.

      • They barely squeaked by a P12 cellar dweller in UCLA at home. A&M, along with many other SEC teams, is very overrated.

          • He said the SEC is over-rated and yet the national championships seem to feature SEC teams every year. Weird coincidence, huh?

          • We’ve talked about this so you should know my response. They have better athletes especially at key positions outside of QB. You come to Cali for a QB.

          • Agreed Clay. When Oregon played in the championship game back in 2011 you could see the difference in caliber of athlete. SC was the only Pac 12 team that could push those bruisers around.

          • Never said that. But I will say that the SEC has one very good team in Alabama, and a lot of mediocre teams, including A&M, after that. An example of my point regarding SEC teams being overrated: Tenn lost and remained at #9 in the AP poll. Wolf probably moved them up on his ballot

          • Their mediocre teams are better than ours. Look at Stanford, Oregon, ASU, Cal and the ruins implosions.

          • Their best mediocre team (A&M) barely beat one of the worst P12 mediocre teams (UCLA). Alabama is clearly the best team between the 2 conferences. UW is clearly the second best. After that it’s a crapshoot.

          • The first game of the season is not a good representation of a team. The SC team today is certainly better than the one that was trashed 52-6 by Alabama on national television. That’s why I am a big believer in an easy warm up game like the NFL with their preseason games to warm up and work the bugs out. I have always hated these “Kickoff Classic” type of games to please the networks on Labor Day. UW was smart to play cream puffs and build up a powerhouse.

      • Yeah, it’s funny that they won the conference their 1st or 2nd year in it. Then they fell victim to the SEC hype that is so ubiquitous, even here. Check our record against the SEC even with the basting we took to open the year. The SEC doesn’t have better teams, they have better athletes. That’s why USC has been able to beat them and the Big 10 because we can matchup with good athletes, but we also have better teams.

        • 10 national champions and 2 runner ups since 1996. 5 different teams won the NC’s

          • Voted national championships and votes to get in the game. All of it subject to hype. Anyway, if you have the better athletes you are bound to do better over time. Keep poking around in the dark, junior.

          • I knew you’d be along with this, Troy. I was thinking it would be you or a troll. Don’t want me like you do, Troy. You know those are the kinds of feelings you’d do better without.

All I’m saying is that voting, by nature, lends itself to hype. Why do you think that schools run Heisman campaigns? Why are there so many political ads lately? Because the voters who cast votes are subject to manipulation, manipulation intended and otherwise. Holster your weapon, sir.

          • True but only the best get to the level of competing amongst the hype. We need SC to return to that level where we matter again. Right now that is the SEC, Big Ten and ACC.

          • SC has won one NC and shared another since 1980, we haven’t exactly been on fire. But 1 1/2 in 36 years is right up old Clay’s need for mediocrity

          • Troy, meet Just Owned. I think you guys would make a lovely couple. I hope you two crazy kids find happiness together.

          • I’m not saying that. I’m saying given the subjective notion of college football the goal is to get to be one of those handful of teams who are considered to be champion.

          • Look at USC’s record against the SEC and you’ll see the basis of my claim. Why don’t you figure these things before you make me explain them to you?

          • The good old days. Loved that game. But remember the fear and dreading before? Dumb to play such a big game to start the season.

      • Come on man, going to Washington State is like playing LSU at home, or Florida or Georgia

  4. Sumlin needed overtime to beat woeful ucla at home this season.

It took A&M two overtimes to beat TENN at home on Saturday and TENN had SEVEN turnovers.

His 2013, ’14 and ’15 seasons were all crap and he finished at the back end of the conference. Lost last year in the Music City Bowl to a mediocre 6-5 LOUIS team. He’s on a 6-0 run now but before this season, he was officially on the hotseat.

When USC looked into him he didn’t want to have to interview for the job and wanted assurances that if he threw his hat into the ring, he had the job. Is a full-on prima donna. No thanks. He’s a drama guy, exactly what USC should avoid.

    • This is a “Look, I wanted Kevin Sumlin and he’s 6-0 now, ain’t I grand?” kind of update.

      • Yeah, what about the 15 other coaches the Blogger was recommending? He’s silent on those. At one point he was even suggesting Mora.

        • Some of these “Trojan fans” were promoting Mora too. Fred was singing his praises last year as a “tough coach who believes in smash mouth football unlike Helton blah blah blah” At least Wolf does it for money. These guys fall in love with every Tom, Richard (that was for you moderator) and Harry that comes down the pike.

  5. How’s the blogger’s dude James Franklin working out?

Basically drop enough turds, one will float.

  6. I hate to burst any bubbles here but Lynn is basically saying want in one hand and shyte in the other see which fills up faster.
I don’t see a new coach on the horizon no matter who wants it
I agree better coaching is needed I don’t see the school pulling the trigger yet. My hope is they do a clandestine search and make the move quickly.

  7. Not sure what part of back to back 8-5 seasons lifts your skirt, but hey man if you like it, feel free to grab that cat.

  8. This just in: Gary Trent Jr won’t sign with the bozo u BB program. Doh!!!

    #andylosesagain

    • I see recess is over…….Correction:
      Gary won’t sign with Btech.
Final 3 were Michigan State, Dook, Btech. Gary Will sign with Dook. Allturd can’t recruit! Hee-Hee-Hee-Hee!

      • Wait Andy, wait !!! Maybe if we had Gary Trent Jr. we could beat the government school FOUR times instead of just three!

        • Jan 2016: UCLA 10 – bozo u 7

UCLA goes 30 – 0, punks bozo u for the 7th consecutive time, and wins the Water Polo its 10th NC.

bozo u women win the Beach Blanket Bingo, wollyball NC.

Greatest living bozo u BB player: Cheryl Miller.

          • The bell just rang. Recess has started. Go play with your ball and make sure you let Pennywise play!

      • Pull your head out.

Mr Trent hasn’t made a decision where he will camp for the year; but, we both know Trent won’t be at bozo u. Some things don’t change.

        #where’schuckiebuggs.

        • The crystal ball is always right. Go see Madame Cleo for your free reading!

  9. No good coach would want to come to USC currently, they keep hiring old retreads from football program as ADs so the coaches worry too much about their oversite of the program rather than being able to run the program on their own ( ie Petersen)

  10. Chip Kelly will be available soon. Keep Helton on if possible, otherwise, turn the keys over to Kelly and watch Troy become the superpower that it should be.

    • Recess just started. Chucky and Pennywise are playing. Lonbozo is also playing. Go play with Pennywise.

  11. Herman lol is ok i see your like radio these days hot one minute and garbage in a year. You like fads I like the TRUTH ! ,but not what we really need. Take Shaw from Stanford or beg Dungy or pry the great coach from the Steelers over. Also if Dallas goes another direction next year that young coach Garrett would fit also . New times. This is what we really need

  12. John gruden is the best chance to win and recruit very well. Ulumni sitting on check books… why not state intent so recruits have bit of certainty.
