USC Quote Of The Night

browne-stanford“If we connect on a few of those throws against Stanford, we’re 2-1 and maybe it’s a different scenario.”

  1. Poor Max. Truly feel for the guy. But everyone was pretty spot-on in their assessments of the talent they saw within Sam. Here’s to moving forward.

    • Do you think Max will transfer? Will a big school pick him up? Will the loss of Max hurt SC if he transfers?

      • Yes, I think he transfers – try and get a productive year somewhere. A big school could potentially pick him up; look at Oregon for instance, taking chances on 2 kids in 2 years with 1 year of eligibility left each. No, I see it being a wash although I don’t know Fink’s skill-set after Darnold departs. And I’m not big on following recruiting, but I have seen this Corral kid on YouTube and he looks like a gamer. But hey, that’s years away. Lots could change, which is why I don’t really do recruiting. Anyway, just my two.

        • USC began recruiting more mobile, athletic QBs several years ago. The top “pro-styles” perhaps don’t even seek out USC at this point. And maybe that change is for the best, given the direction of CFB.

Stanford is holding steady. But even Alabama passed on their pocket-style junior to choose between dual-threat Hurd and another mobile and athletic QB, Barnett. In 2017, Tagaloa committed there. Sark is the “consultant”, presumably in line to replace Kiffin, and Sark’s the one who stopped recruiting pure passers at USC.

          I don’t know what an air-raid offense requires in a QB–probably not a runner.

If Helton gets the boot, which is a significant possibility, the next coach might continue along this passing-dual-threat path, or might veer away from it. A lot of moving pieces.

It’s no science, that’s for sure. Darnold was apparently more than had been expected. That alone is surprising, to look at how fast he sees something and gets the ball out, with good velocity. Was his accuracy in HS more like the throw to Rogers and the last one to Juju? If so, that might explain it. But I forgot, you don’t do recruiting. 🙂

          • Ha. No knock on those who do follow recruiting, just not my thing until the week of signing day. Anyway, I see what you’re saying.

          • Signing Day’s always a lot of fun for purposes of the circus.

Don’t need one day of the rest of it though and I think the fan boy site evaluations are very superficial, questionable and driven by the power programs and revenue concerns.

          • I’ll bet your career is going well, isn’t it? You avoid pointless distraction, and that one key to success. :).

          • How do you define “several years ago”? Maybe 2/3 mobile QBs were recruited since the early 2000’s, but only Darnold has started more than 1-game. (Palmer, Sanchez, Leinart, Booty, Barkley, Kessler were all pocket-type passers). Arron Corp was considered a dual threat QB and he started 1-game.

          • Sorry for being vague. “Several,” as in the arrival of Sark, who wanted to borrow from Chip Kelly. Green, Darnold, Fink, not to mention Tagaloa, Tate Martell, and others who got away.

Not that Sark didn’t offer ANY less mobile QBs, because a coach with any sense wants a good QB every year, and that ain’t easy, not even for PC. He was so angry when Sanchez left early, because he could see that with Sanchez, the following year was all going to cohere beautifully.

Plus, local hotshots have to be offered, for for both marketing purposes and alumni placation.

If you recall, Sark told HC Kiffin that no-huddle, dual-threat seemed the way to go, having played against Kelly often and studied that tape carefully.

The QB recruiting profiles changed when Sark arrived.

Without a doubt, an offense with a very good OL and very good RBs could succeed with Browne, let alone with Josh Rosen. Rosen would have done great at Alabama when Stanford didn’t offer him, if he could keep his mouth shut, womanize discreetly, and work on his game.

If any program can hang with pro-style or any other style, it’s Alabama, yet even Saban came to believe that the times, they are a changin’, and to fish for an OC to put up big numbers, as necessary, against U.Miss or Tex A&M.

    • After reading the full interview word for word, you find the true context this quote is taken from.SW with this post misses the true honesty that Max conveys.Max shows class, honest emotions, doesn’t fault anyone. You read his vulnerability, and yes he is very open to transfer when the time comes.
