Freshman Get Warm Ups At Least

Clay Helton says USC’s freshmen wide receivers are not playing or redshirting because of the depth at the position. My personal opinion is if there was a Robert Woods or Marqise Lee they would be playing. I still think Michael Pittman can be special once he gets a chance. In the meantime, it’s warmup videos that will spotlight players like Trevon Sidney.

  1. There are more positions open than wide receiver. These guys will have to stand in line or stand out. I played in band as a percussionist, I always was willing to play a different part when it was available. I wound up going to Europe playing as a percussionist while the guys who only played snare drum were left home.
If they make themselves valuable they will be playing.

    • Reminds of former USC QB John Fox from the 1990’s.

Came in as a QB. Lost job and ended up moving to LB, then TE to help the team out. As luck would have it, had to move back to QB in 1999 after Carson Palmer broke his collarbone early in the year. As a fifth – year senior, Fox then went out and beat the Bruins as a starting QB to end the streak. John Fox was truly one of the unselfish Trojans who put the team first.

Like you said, “If they make themselves valuable, they will be playing.”

  2. When your defensive line (and offensive line also) is struggling depth-wise and you have 11 WRs, that just shows bad team management. Helton added onto that WR list this past NSD so he is part of this problem. Wonder how many WRs Alabama & Ohio St have on their rosters since Helton feels he is worthy of a “big boy program”?

    • David, neither of us liked the Helton hire.

OTOH, he changed the entire staff, and justifiably so. USC lost big games at the end of the year. Who were the OLs and DLs that “got away”.

It may be too early for this particular criticism, although many other doubts persist.

If Swann can hire a really superior candidate, he should do so, but postpone the transition until the end of the season. Swann played for McKay and Noll. I would be surprised if Swann thinks a yes-man is what he needs, or that USC can duplicate the success of his Trojans and Steelers without top linemen.

(Aside: Sidney was always super coordinated. I remember a video of some HS practice session in which he made a difficult catch racing for the sideline, and still had the presence of mind and body control to hurdle a woman and baby seated way too close to the field. He’s probably not a wasted scholarship…if they can get some blockers. 🙂
