USC Morning Buzz: Time For The Weekly Notes Column

marqise-arizonaIf it’s Friday, it’s my weekly notes column, where I offer my USC-Arizona game prediction, give some NFL scouts’ take on the Trojans and again note that coaches are quick to mention the how special Sam Darnold is today but didn’t ever mention he should start back in August. Full story here

In the picture above is the last time USC played a day game in Tucson in 2012, when Marqise Lee had a Pac-12 record 345 yards receiving but the Trojans lost, 39-36.

  1. Hindsight is not 20/20. If the coaches thought Browne was going to be ineffective they would have started Darnold.
Practice interceptions don’t always indicate game interceptions because the team defensive players know their quarterback. And the quarterback needs to try those questionable passes in practice instead of a game. So Browne looked fine in practice but he’s not a game player.

    • Darnold was better than Browne in practice, everyone saw it but the coach who has zero bawlz so he went with the older guy, he even admitted as much.

    • Actually Browne flat got beat out by Darnold over a long stretch of time in numerous practices. But Browne’s been a loyal soldier, a classy guy and Gomer wanted to keep him from transferring, so he sat Darnold.

Problem was the sitting of Darnold cost USC a lot more than Gomer ever anticipated. He didn’t understand how much more Darnold brought to the table – better passer, better runner, better escape artist, better impromptu playmaker, better leader, better intangibles. It’s so obvious.

Thank God Swann stepped in and corrected the problem. That was the move of the year and saved Gomer for at least another year on the job. Gomer’s a very nice guy. Hopefully he becomes a good HC before he has to get tossed into the scrap heap along with the Kiffer and the Drunk.

  2. If Porter Gustin develops , its going to be because he did it on his own, because Clay Helton, and the previous two coaching staffs don’t have a clue how to do that. And can you imagine the different options Sam Darnold would bring to a pro-set I formation running offense? USC would be unstoppable, because Darnold would keep defenses on their toes. And as that nfl scout mentioned, the Trojans offensive line are built for that type of game, but obviously, Helton has bigger and better ideas. …lol

  3. Actually that is not the last time USC played in Tucson. That pic was in 2012, where they lost by that score. Please see the guy in the background, Matt Barkley. He could not spike the ball in the last seconds of the game. In 2014, USC won on a blocked field goal as time expired. Nice try Wolfie 🙂

    • Wolf said that was the last time USC played a DAY game. Please re-read it, hehe. Nice try 🙂

      • The keys got sticky from his peanut butter and jelly sandwich and he dropped his tang on the photo he had planned on scooping the story with, but he needed approval from 22, but was not allowed access to his ce at county lockup because Bubba was lathering 22 all up .. Mister Scooper was late in his deadline.. He posted the wrong photo.

  6. Power, counter, Iso, trap, and toss (student body right) are the most common “power running” plays. There is usually a guard pulling on every single one of those plays, except Iso.

If you or your “scout” knew anything about football maybe you’d know the basics of power plays.
