Discuss The Game

Arizona is so bad it’s hard to make many pronouncements for this game. Here’s a stat: Ronald Jones, in his first start of season, rushed for 77 yards. He had 177 last year against the Wildcats. Something’s clearly amiss this season.

USC basically looks like the Sam Darnold Show. He masks all the other deficiencies, including coaching. Darnold was the leader rusher per carry (9.0) and his passing rating was 175.88. He can make anyone look good.

  1. More blah, blah, blah. And SW wonders why the L.A Times doesn’t come calling. 320 yards on the ground.

  2. Talk about the importance of having a good QB!!! This Darnold kid knows how the game should be played, and he knows how to win. He’s obviously saving Gomer’s bacon at this point. Now, can he do the same against the rivals and the undefeated Washington team? Can’t wait to find out!!! FIGHT ON!!!

    • I love how Carroll coached up Reggie Bush to win all of those games for him. Amazing Darnold can come in with no coaching and win those games. 2005 we would have lost to Fresno State w/o Carroll coaching up Bush.
      #delusional

      • That’s a great point you make! Yes, Darnold seems to be naturally gifted beyond belief! He certainly looks to be a different breed than most.

  3. Regardless of the pinheads chirping UoA is a horrible team. A win is a WIN. Team is playing and executing, even against lesser opponents!

    • Right 55, and 5 cents is 5 cents. Isn’t that how you rationalize your dumpster diving to collect discarded water bottles.

  4. How is this for a pronouncement?: USC dominated a team they should have dominated. They won a game they should have won & now it is time to prepare for the next game.

  5. Arizona has to be the worst team in the Pac 12, but the repetitions Sam Darnold are getting will only improve his game as the season goes on. As disgustingly weak as the conference is, USC might be able to run the table, with the exception of the Washington Huskies. We probably won’t get a true reading on the type of team the Trojans really are, until they play better competition in a bowl game .

    • Fred, after “2” more WINS, there’s no such thing as “Except Washington” ?

      Washington 35 – Arizona 28 !

Regardless of what, USC Beat-Down !

      USC + “33”, Washington + “7” !

      Ain’t Chit…

      FightOn

      • I don’t like using the common opponent theory, but because of the up, and downs of the conference, you May be, correct.

    • Fred, you can stop saying “we” and start saying “I” because you’re the only one who needs a full 13 game season before getting a reading on the type of team you’re watching. Speak for yourself.

    • Hmm…Fred, that would be the dream scenario for Gomer because that’ll surely guarantee him at least another 2 to 3 seasons with the team. Even with this mini winning steak, I’m still a naysayer of Gomer as a long term solution for our team. And I must say this is an awkward situation because I’m really enjoying these wins with Darnold in there. He makes watching games so much more fun, compared to those with Browne, or even Kessler last year.

  6. Great victory – now if Helton would crack down hard on any and all personal fouls by the players they’d win a few more games. THAT needs to change – only Mora and the bruins commit more nonetheless it is a sign as to how much respect the players have towards their head coach.

Great victory and Cal is next.

  7. Defense has improved! Offensive line has improved. Could it have anything to do with coaching?

  8. Hey I didn’t say we were a great team. What’s up with all you downers. Please leave the Casino grounds! You guys are bad luck!

  9. Any reason to comment on why SC scored more points than you predicted and the defense held UA to significantly less points than you predicted? But please, don’t let any “analysis” of actual football being played get in the way of your script.

  10. Right now Arizona might be the worst team in Pac12. But USC dominated the way they should have!

  11. Gee, ?

I wonder if the [ 3.5 ] UCLA point spread just changed ??

    “UCLA” + 14, News at 11 ???

    UCLAoN…

  12. Just saw the Dodger lineup and I like It. Not sure who devised it, but it smells awfully good.

    #88allover again.

    • We’re gonna need some HR’S tonight. Windy field. Maeda’s gonna have to keep the ball down.

      • The wind is blowing straight out. The Dodger lineup can take advantage the Wrigley wind conditions.

        • Dodgers are sub .400 first game after they leave LA. They are over 500 in game 2-3- .. I really don’t the Dodgers winning with a sh#tty rotation.

    • This series will be fun to watch. Youth and experience on both rosters. Best match up of all the teams remaining!

  13. From where we’re coming from it’s kind of a luxury to complain after a blowout. We dominated the cats, but it was still a bit of a ragged performance. The stupid penalties and the need to call timeouts because you’re not ready to run a play are my 2 biggest complaints.

It seems that every time I start cussing Biggie out, somebody throws him an Int.

Porter Gustin got an education today and I hope he’s better for it.

Gotta give Uchena some credit for the way he’s been playing lately and Hutch has been better too.

Sam makes all the difference and no more so than on 3rd down.

Rojo might start losing reps to Mr Ware.

It looks like we’re getting better to me and I think the bye comes at a good time. Gotta stay after it and not get complacent now.

Good, blowout win on the road, but we still have a lot of work to do.

    • Disagree. Inside the UA 10 yard line Ware missed an open hole then ran straight into the pack. Rojo got it done, Clay.

      • I’m sure Ware had more than one play that won’t grade out that well, but it doesn’t change the fact that Rojo is at best in a sophomore slump.

  14. You make conclusions based on the stats of two games, really?

The game was in hand so Helton held Jones back in the second half and let Ware and Davis gain big yardage. No need to get Jones injured while Justin is sidelined.

Helton had the team ready to play and Martin called a great game – just repeating every week that there were coaching deficiencies only works on Vulcan.

Darnold is getting better by the week. But he didn’t make Helton look good during the second half last week. At this rate I like our odds of running the table through the Pac-12 championship.

I wonder if Darnold can make the Blogger look good?

  15. My goodness. The blogger is bitter. This guy would complain about paying taxes if he won the lottery.

  16. OK.

    UCLA 13 – bozo u 9 @ the mausoleum.

bozo u choka, choka, choka’s and blows a BCS championship game invitation.

Little petey is speechless, and bozo u rah-Rah’s can only make whiny excuses to mitigate their humiliation.

    • Have Bubba slide them between your arse cheeks. You seem to be a small guy so you might like that. Im married ..no need to challenge my manhood! You’d lose!!!

    • He deserves it… He thinks I am someone bouncing in and out with other blogger names.. I was 86 til I forgot my access code. So I changed to 63 .. No idea who the others he is chasing, but hey he started it..I will finish it!

  17. SW loves for SC to lose. That’s always super Troll fodder and blog ignitor because he can pretend he’s a football expert and is the Head Coach Whisperer. Well, we’re all experts here and I’m so glad Sumlin and Mora isn’t our coach.

Some are even smart enough to even see that Darnold saved our team from a very bad season and the Trojans are playing better for sure, in all phases because of him. It’s called hope and attitude. Coaches all deserve some nice credit too lately, but if you take Darnold off that field, I think we would still be struggling.

Hope to God he doesn’t get hurt. It’s like watching Rodney Peete out there. Darnold is the biggest thing to happen to the Trojans since Reggie Bush, except he plays a more important position and has parents who won’t sink the program.

  18. Good to see guys like Christian Rector, Connor Murphy, and Oluwole (man i butchered that) in the game. These guys need pt. Fatu played too.

  19. A lot of people played and it was good to see some new faces. Cal should give us another opportunity to clear the bench again, but I think we better be cautious about burning redshirts from here out. We’ll see about the injuries at receiver and it’ll be interesting to see what the coaches do depending on the extent of the injuries. Obviously I hope they are ok and also I hope Juju doesn’t use it as drama material. Love his game, but hated the BS taunting and resulting penalty as well as some of his other emotional stuff.

I think I saw some promise in some of the backup D-linemen and the cupboard might not be as bare as we think. They all need to bulk up, but there is some potential there. I still want to see more D-line recruits from the south and Texas. The backup DBs let them complete a long pass that was in the air way too long and shouldn’t have been completed and they were just clearly beat.

  20. Does anyone have news on Juju? Did we lose during the win?
Did injuries cost more than points?
And what about learning a lesson, like three straight runs up the middle do not call for a fourth.

    • I think X-Rays were negative on Juju’s back, and I’m pretty sure they’ll schedule MRIs for Juju and Mitchell.

  21. Off topic, but related…..Wilcox’s Wisconsin D has held OSU to 6 points in the first half! Amazing. Shows how bad of a HC Sark was in keeping his staff focused, and just maybe by the time Sark was replaced, Wilcox had given up since Helton wasn’t much better and he didn’t buy into Helton being HC. Just a thought, but Wisconsin’s D looks great.

    • All I know is Whisky is about to blow my pool up if things don’t change in that game.

    • All I can say Ray, and it’s not directly towards you is…How come he didn’t do this at USC?

  22. While I was “Ob-serving” (Remember, I am just an OB- SERVER) I “noticed” the Michigan State score (54 – 40, WISCONSIN!) and I was wondering, “I wonder how “Tinkerbell” is doing” ?

    Hmm, let Me see…

Michigan State just gave up “54” points against a team that “squeaked” by a USC Team less-than (->) “1” year ago of which Cody Kessler “blew” a Trojan “win” with a boneheaded interception when the Trojans were driving for the Win ???

AND a “field” goal “would” have won the game ???

But back to the point, “Tinkerbell”, that was the “most” points given up by Michigan State “EVER” on their HOME FIELD !

    EVER !!!

    Which leads Me to ask…

Who was the “IDIOT” who “fired” Tinkerbell and hired [ Clancy Pendergast ]

    Fire that “IDIOT” NOW !

Obviously, He doesn’t “know” (No) what He is doing…

    Sincerely yours,

    Trojans to-bring-back-“Tinkerbell” now !!!

    StupidOn

  23. How many carries did Rojo have today compared with last year’s game against UA when he wasn’t splitting time with Ware ? Come on SW, until you give us the answer, your condemnation of Rojo might be nothing but an SW crock of sh@t !!! Another and another and another….seemingly endless……

    • Here we go. Last year, Rojo had 19 carries for 177 yards. His longest run was 74 yards. Subtract the 74 from 177 equals 103 yards. 19 carries gaining 103 yards equals 5.4 yards per carry. Today, Rojo’s 16 carries for 77 yards equals 4.2 yards per carry. I don’t think Rojo is second to anyone in the Trojan backfield except for Justin Davis. Rojo carried the ball against a ist half UA defense that had not yet collapsed from the heat. Oh, in last years UA-USC game Rojo split time with Justin Davis.

      • I remember last year thinking that Rojo ran almost recklessly because he would hit the hole so fast and hard. He seems more deliberate than last year and something is definitely missing. The bottom line is that a RB has to make people miss in order to be great. You can’t just be fast, you gotta beat somebody every time you touch the football. There has been more there than Ronald has been getting and it’s a little concerning at this point.

      • I totally agree with you. Rojo was running very hard. He was fighting for every yard. As hard as I’ve seen him run.Just because he did not break off any long runs of 30 plus does not mean he was not doing well. I thought he ran very well.

  24. Oops, that was Northwestern over Michigan State ?

    Not Wisconsin !

    Anyway…

Crack is not good for the brain !

    Sometimes I get too obliviated

  25. Darnold is a huge talent and saved the season. Future looks bright with this kid.
