Pac-12 vs. SEC

browne-alabama-2I mentioned yesterday how bad the Pac-12’s marquee teams are this season. Does the Pac-12 have any good nonconference victories yet? This is where the SEC usually gets bashed for its weak nonconference schedule. But Alabama beat USC and Texas A&M beat UCLA, so there’s two victories.

  1. Wolf, are you trying to make a bold statement by saying the SEC is the stronger conference currently?

  2. The Pac-12 will have to shut up and win something before the weak conference narrative is going to change. Our best team out here has one of the worst non-conf slates in history.

Our two L.A. teams, especially USC, flopped all over the place against ALA and A&M.

Right now, the Pac is woeful, which is why Gomer should nearly win out with Darnold. And if UW loses a game or two, we won’t finish with one single top 10 team.

There’s always 2017. But I think the cake is baked for the Pac-12 this year. The Big Ten has four teams that are at UW’s level or better: OHIO ST, MICH, NEB and WIS.

      • Riley sure had his growing pains last year. Great guy, though. Happy to see him do well.

I think the expectations of the Pac-12 are sorely lacking, even within the conference. It starts at the top and Pac-12 football programs don’t seem to be under the same pressure to perform as elsewhere.

Overall, I don’t have complaints with most of the current Pac-12 coaches. It just seems like the football culture out here doesn’t demand nor reinforce excellence. We may be the Conference of Champions, but that doesn’t apply to football anymore. USC was replaced by ORE and STAN, and both those programs found ways to finish a little short.

We’ll have to see if UW is really ready to stay atop the mantle and win on the big stages. If they do, that could change everything in the Pac and force the rest of the schools to up their game. When USC was dominant, everybody had to up their game – and many did. Now it’s up to UW. They’ve got Petersen, the best HC coach out here. If he can truly make the Huskies dominant, it could affect many other teams out here.

        • Urban Meyer’s comment after Saturday’s game was very telling about the Big Ten mindset…”This game (Wisconsin’s performance) was great for our conference”

          • Because it was a hell of a game … two good teams playing tough football … not the usual flag football crap or SEC borefest.

      • Besides Harbaugh it makes you wonder how Mike Riley and Justin Wilcox are having success in the Big10, but were getting slapped around in the Pac12. My theory is the Big12 is overrated. We all seen Wilcox get beat week after week at SC. Not Sark, not Helton. Wilcox. And Riley had to leave because his family name wasn’t doing it anymore in Corvallis. Oregon St was becoming Colorado.

        • Big Ten is heading the way the SEC was 10 years ago. Overrated from 2003 to 2009 or so, but kept getting favorable matchups in the BCS (Ohio State & Oklahoma the BCS Whipping Boys always avoiding Pete Carroll along the way). The TV Revenue, Conference First Self Promotion and strong Coaching Hires actually made them into the best conference in the past few years due to attracting the recruits.

          • It’s top heavy. After Ohio St, Michigan (now) and Wisconsin there’s not much left. Nebraska is up there at the moment, but they are very iffy with people. Wisconsin beat a bad LSU team and has lost it’s biggest games. They played tough, but a loss is still a loss. Nebraska beat Oregon, but so have a lot of teams this year.

          • I have to say I don’t think Nebraska has the playoff potential. Ohio St is the only team I see that is truly a power right now from the biggy10

          • Don’t we all pretty much have Ohio St. and Alabama playing for the National Championship already?

        • Whisky’s style is run clock , control the ball with the run … they have a hard nosed D .. longer Wilcox is there the softer they will become

      • Agree. But the #8 Huskers will finish 10-2 and get into a much better bowl than USC will. That’s how I’m seein’ it.

        • Barring any injuries liken to Ucla .. I’d wait on proclaiming Wa a 10-2 team. Still have a full month before USC plays Wa.. Anything can happen. Browning like Rosen at B-tech are those teams offense.. Any other qb as you have seen is a disaster. Charlie Waffle’s at B-tech held his own. But will he be consistent?!

    • The Pac 12 with the addition of Colorado and Utah has a record of 63 loses and 42 wins against the SEC in its history of playing one another 42 wins.. USC has 24 of those wins .. The other 11 teams in the Pac have a combined 18 wins.

        • I think BYU held up a red flag because they don’t play sports on Sundays.
I could be wrong. But that’s what Finebaum said last month. I don’t think the Pac12 would move the entire Sunday sports schedule around for any school.

        • BYU is not liked due to that mission thing , those guys can be 25 … no conference wants that

  3. TV Exposure, TV Revenue and the resulting Coaching Hires in the Big 10 particularly (Meyer/Harbaugh (and Wilcox :-)) are quickly turning the Power 5 into the Power 3. The Big 12 is defacto dead conference walking and the Pac 12 is turning into the Mountain West thanks in no small part to Larry Scott.

  4. If the PAC-12 school presidents demanded their ADs to hire the best coaches & build their football programs like the SEC, building a following, you would see lots more interest coming this way. You don’t think DirecTV, ESPN, FOX, CBS, etc. wouldn’t be unloading their wallets here like they do/would the SEC/maybe the Big-10? The reason PAC-12 football is considered a weak sister compared to all other conferences (maybe even the Big-12) is the lack of support from the Universities themselves.

    • The PAC 12 presidents are more concerned over letting illegal aliens into their schools, being ” fair ” to mentally ill transgender goofballs, being PC and promoting a socialist agenda. Football ?

    • There’s some valid stuff here, but college football is kind of like a regional sport. The fan bases out here can’t be compared with the fan bases down south. We are “west coast fans” and all that it entails. We simply aren’t as rabid about sports on the west coast. NFL, MLB and NBA fans are more rabid on the east coast and college football fans are more rabid in the south. We’ll never put that kind of stock in sports out here and that might not be a bad thing.

    • Yes. The worst example of that is the terrible bowls that the Pac 12 settles for while the SEC gets the best.

  5. Look at NFL rosters and see how many OL and DL there are from the PAC 12, not many. Football is won in the trenches. Many of the PAC 12 coaches are finesse coaches. Start recruiting top OL & DL and get away from this pass first mentality and the conference might come back to respectability

    • When you bring up DL, you are talking about a team playing defense. Good defense is what makes teams great, offense gets points on the board, defense prevents points. PAC12 is not playing much great defense. Not bad, but could be better.

  6. WASU WR Gabe Marks just ripped UCLA calling them “douchey” for the Bruins warming up on the Cougars side before the game and trying to act “too tough”.

    That’s funny!

    #Douchey

    • The funny thing is that even many USC fans fell for Mora’s bravado and thought anger and yelling made for a good, tough coach.

        • Blaming me for calling out Fred makes for a bad poster.

Utah state probably has better coaching from the top to bottom, and have enough talent to stay with USC in the 1st half, but the Trojans win this one in the 4th quarter.

          • LOL Clay is butt hurt for getting called out for his brainless rah rahism. If you are going to be another CowPolyFan3.0, you have to embrace it.

          • Troy, when are you going to stop hating me and actually read the stuff the guy puts out there? Why are you not accusing me of making his posts up at this point? Why would you believe that all this erroneous stuff could come from just one person? I’ve only gone as far as 2 months back for the 20+ comments of his that I’m posting. Are you at any point going to read them and make your own determination?

          • Nobody has a crystal ball her, including you. If you did you wouldn’t be wasting your time here trying to one up Fred.

          • That’s not a good argument, Troy, It’s not about predicting the future. Knowledge

          • What is really nice is to see convo about something besides Helton being the worst coach ever.

          • 22 hates everyone.. He “thinks” he’s smarter than us/me a USC grad… That has no connection to Cal Poly whatsoever.. All talk… Tiresome, yes.. But at 6’5 and 230 I can take it… 22 is a legend in his own mind!

          • He and the other trolls are delusional.. They like to trash talk to prove their worthy of keeping up with the smarter one’s. They want you to stoop to their level. A level liken to 22’s education at Cerritos City College. And blogging as USC55 and the other mysterious blogger names.. I have had 2 accounts and have been on here since April.

          • Yeah, I generally stay away from them, but sometimes you just have to take time out for them.

          • I enjoy the convo on here..I like it because it breaks up the day… I’m either working from home or the office, traveling or on location or in meetings .. I use my cell for social media with the apps…

          • I actually like it. I can be anywhere and still converse with everyone. I only use my home and office computers for work .. And bills.

          • I never use the laptop unless my son is watching YouTube or I am streaming the USC Baseball games.

          • 63, we need a win tonight. This 1st home game is crucial for the remainder of the series. Hill has to pitch 6 innings in my opinion. Seager and Grandal have to wake up the bats.

            GO DODGERS!!!

          • I’m in front of the tv .. Food and drinks. .. Dodgers have the 55k fans as motivation. Need to take care of biz.

          • Look in the mirror and I’ll see what I’m accusing Fred of? It didn’t work because it doesn’t fit. Why are you so upset to see Fred’s posts reposted?

      • That tough attitude looks like all talk and no action to me. I respect him for beating USC in his first three tries, but I was never impressed with him. Those were three sanction friendly W’s and he can’t beat Oregon and Stanford. I never knew what the hype was about with Mora.

  7. People ignore the Big10 at their own peril. They are the conference the last few years that rivals SEC not Pac12; and vs Pac12 they are equal or better.I am speaking of the top tier ,especially in the top Bowl games, they win them or are fighting at the end .

  8. Remember the old WAC conference of the 70’s and 80’s? Well that’s what the Pac 12 is today. SOFT n FINESSE!!!!!

Unless Clay Helton wants Max Browne to transfer to a lower division school, and become eligible immediately, or leave after he graduates at the end of the year, then he better start him. Because if he doesn’t, then the quarterback position becomes a problem with depth, and experience.

Other then JuJu Smith, I don’t see a #1 draft pick on the current USC roster unless someone develops into one. Mel Kiper brought up Adoree Jackson last night, and said he will be a top pick next year, but I have no idea how he came to that conclusion .

Exactly! And as long as USC keeps running that offense , the chances of them producing a #1 draft pick at quarterback will be slim to none . And eventually 4&5 star QB’s coming out of high school will figure it out.

Speaking of Cody Kessler, is he even going to get drafted? I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t, because it seems like quarterbacks that didn’t line up under center on a regular basis in college, struggle at the next level.

I agree, and believe it or not, I’m all in with Clay Helton, unlike I was with the two previous clowns before him . But nevertheless, I know the pressure is on him, and I hope his fate isn’t based on wins, and losses next season, but rather direction , discipline, and development of his players.

      • Without Darnold it’s hard to say the direction and development of his players with Helton.
        SAM IS THE MAN!

Always go with the one that draws an nfl paycheck, as oppose to the one that might not get drafted. Good answer, Max Browne, and I think you’ll end up being better then the previous two qb’s , mentioned

I doubt if Clay Helton would mislead Max Browne into thinking he was the starting quarterback, just to prevent him from transferring. Because if he did that , he would lose all respect from his players, and future recruits. That sounds more like something Steve Sarkisian would do, because he had no morals, along with being a, liar .

      • For what it is worth, I don’t believe Helton mislead Browne just to keep him from transferring. Not Helton’s style.

        • I agree, but many people don’t. I think Helton and Browne’s situations were very much the same. They both went through all the BS at USC together, they both kept working hard and didn’t complain in the press. They were both good soldiers and I think Helton wanted to get Max paid off just like he was paid off. That’s why I only hold Helton accountable for not getting it right before the Stanford game. I would’ve shown the same loyalty to Max up until Stanford week.

          • I feel bad for Max, but in my humble opinion he didn’t look good in the route against Utah St. He missed too many open receivers and holds onto the ball too long, and is a tree in the cement while in the pocket. He had three games, but Sam is obviously better.

          • At risk of having this reposted some day, I would say that you shouldn’t be too surprised to see Max on an NFL roster at some point. I’m not going to feel too sorry for him because the world is still his if he wants it. He’d be a better pro QB than a college QB anyway.

          • I think he’s pretty much checked out at this point. However, he’d be smart to stay ready with the way Sam sticks his hat in there.

If you look at the different defensive line’s around the Pac 12, then you will see USC still has the best talent, from top to bottom. So stop with the, Paul Hackett crying , about youth on the team .

  9. We also need to pay attention to the Big Ten conference, because they are slowly becoming the new physical bullies on the block. Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh, Paul Chryst, and Minnesota’s , Tracy Claeys all have a run first mentality. And the coaches that build programs from the inside out as oppose to the outside in, have a better chance of playing for a national championship .

    • (Repost) Fred Sampson 7 months ago
USC continues to pump up Adoree Jackson even though he’s accomplished, nothing. Why? I didn’t witness anything special about his play, but maybe because he was outshined by JuJu .

I didn’t assassinate his character, I gave an opinion of his play . I’m not going to fall for the media hype of any player , including Adoree Jackson. Football players can become #1 draft picks off of one outstanding game, just as they can make all conference off of a few interceptions. You can evaluate the way you want, and I’ll continue to do it the way I’ve been for 25 years.

I hear Antwon Woods name being mentioned more then Su’a Cravens, believe it or not, so don’t be surprised if he’s picked before him . Woods would bring immediate help to any teams defensive lines rotation, but Cravens will have to adjust to a safety position that he hasn’t played fulltime in, two years.

If Steve Sarkisian didn’t run the comical version of the spread offense, then Max Browne would have started over Cody Kessler in a heartbeat. Because Kessler can’t make the nfl throws with authority, and struggled with hitting the deep receivers in stride .

    • I disagree. The teams that build solid talented aggressive defenses are the ones that play for the NC.

    • God, do you realize how many times I read this very post going through your old comments?

  10. Wolf your head keeps getting in the way of the camera during interviews at USC/Scout. You’re ruining the shot!!!!
