Matt Barkley Finally Surfaces

barkley-perryMatt Barkley got extended playing time for the first time since October 27, 2013, tonight in the Chicago Bears-Green Bay Packers game. Barkley completed 6-of-11 passes for 81 yards and was intercepted twice. In the photo above, Barkley’s USC teammate, Nick Perry, tries to sack him.

  1. Barkley is not an NFL caliber QB. Would be very surprised to see him in the league next year. Nice man but he is the reincarnation of Jimmy Clausen. He is not an NFL player.

Who wooda thought that former the Parade Player of the Year, 5-star recruit, No. 1 player in the nation, Steve Clarkson protege, Pete Carroll’s “outlier”, one-time potential first round draft pick would be fighting for a career as a practice squad player while three star/four star recruit, non-Steve-Clarkson QB, Lane Kiffin frustrating, “third round is too high” draft pick would be making a strong case as a starting franchise QB.

          • You do realize that there is the often remarked upon fact that Wentz was 5’8 and 120lbs until his junior year of high school, and then reached 6 ft, growing to 6’5 225 lbs running a 4.7 by the time he graduated from college. So I guess SC should start recruiting 5’8 quarterbacks and hope for a 9 inch, 100lb growth spurt.

          • Great example. Clay had much more to work with, he had multiple people in his immediate family as NFL players and his coach/dad was an NFL player, so you knew he knew the game and that he could fill that frame out.

Clay at 6’1, 180 going up to 6’3 240 wasn’t anywhere near 9 inches and 100lbs that Wentz added from but the point still works- you would only gamble if you had a lot to go on.

Wentz was a tiny kid who put up numbers playing against nobodies and still got a scholie to a perennial contender to win their non power conference . These instances prove the point- the recruiting machine is pretty dang good.

        • Sam Darnold was a 4 star. And he broke his hand and his foot missing most of his last two years of playing or he’d have been ranked higher. Matt Barkley is IN THE NFL. The fact that his talent has him in the league is huge- 98% of college players will never be there much less stay that long. Jeesh, think people.

  2. Fat Matt threw 2 interceptions? Shocking. He’ll be gone when the Bears hire Harbaugh

    • You know Jim Harbaugh’s not going to any nfl team, unless he’s picking his own front office people. Because he’s not gonna go through the same disaster he had with the 49ers.

      • He’s not leaving Michigan for a long while..that dude is determined to win a Natty to go along with his Super Bowl ring. He loves recruiting and pretty much is the face and voice of the “franchise”, even though its college football.

  3. The Bears O line didn’t help much. He actually had very little time and at least the pick I saw was helped by the lack of blocks. He was hit from behind while in the motion of passing and the ball fluttered away .

    • His coming back for his senior year cost him up to $20 million according to the OC Register and injured his shoulder. His devotion to USC can never be questioned.

      • His shoulder didn’t just go out there and injure itself. #ABarr

        #neverforget #cleanhit #LBU

        • Not cool to celebrate injuries.
Karma is being a real bitch to Rosen’s shoulder.

  4. Matt better play as long as he can, and milk the opportunities of making those nfl paychecks. Because even as a backup he can earn $800,000 annually. And that’s not real life, every day, money.

  5. Cant imagine Barkley will be on a roster after this year. His best hope is to be USC AD after Swann leaves.

  6. I’m waiting for Bruin Rob and Buckethead to chime in on this. They love to hate Barkley despite the fact that he’s accomplished more in his relatively short life that those two morons combined.
