The Defense Rests

Clay Helton must feel pretty good watching Cal and Oregon (USC’s next 2 opponents) fail to stop each other tonight. The over/under was 89, the highest figure in college football history according to betting experts. And they scored 84 in regulation.

UPDATED: Cal wins, 52-49, in double overtime.

  1. Now Cal is falling apart. Now Oregon can’t move the ball. Interception. Unbelievable game. USC should score 100 on Cal.

  2. Cal has some nice little athletes that are quick and we’re going to need to tackle well. Gustin is going to have to do a better job setting the edge this week. The QB moves ok, but you can get to him. We’ll probably see a lot of nickel from Clancy, but our D-line needs to be the one to take over and control this game. Like everyone does, we’ll score a lot of points against Cal and I’d like to see the defense not relax and play the whole 60. The WHOLE 60. Put it on a T-Shirt if you have to.

    • Our pass rush isn’t where we want it to be, but Oregon’s was pitiful. We’ll get better pressure on Cal.

      • The pass rush has picked up a bit but it sure isn’t where we want it to be. We really need to get some guys penetrating and blowing up some of that stuff Cal does before it really gets started. They are creative in getting the ball to all these speedy little backs they have.

  3. It seemed Cal threw a lot, 42 of 61 attempts, the longest being 17 yards, to several different receivers (10) for 325 yards. Hope SC backfield and linebackers are well prepared.

    • ASU, AZ, Ore ST, stink as well so that’s half the conference that stinks. Add average USC, Stanford, Col, WSU and Utah and you’ve got a mess

  4. Cal gets a short week road trip mid-week night game. And you guys host coming off a bye. Seems like the PAC 12 is gifting you this one.

  5. So, now the Pac 12 is uncompetitive on the football field in addition to being uncompetitive on the bottom line. Our bowl tie-ins totally suck and our recruiting footprint area gets less competitive by the year. Does anyone else see the writing on the wall here? What are we getting out of this conference?? What happens when programs and conferences that are already out-competing you get tens of millions more dollars than you every year? Are we still interested in being a dominant football program? If so, you have change something because this conference doesn’t appear to be a viable vehicle for those wishing to stay among the elite of college football. Even when Pete was here and we were winning, the conference was still a weight around our necks. I don’t know where we’re going with this, but holding and hoping isn’t the answer.
