USC Morning Buzz: A Schedule Advantage From Pac-12

wheeler-uclaCal is probably thrilled to play USC on Thursday with one less day than normal to prepare. And even worse, USC is coming off a bye.

“It’s a big advantage,” USC offensive tackle Chad Wheeler said. “They probably had like six hours off and had to come back to practice (after their game).”

      • 27-21 with the Patriots with a playoff win is a failure? Kiffin’s Raider or Saban’s Dolphin records are true failures.

        • He took over a team that had just lost the Super Bowl. They did not get better as a team each year he coached.
It wasn’t his time yet. He also got fired after 1 year with the Jets, which is a hard place to win.
Kiffin and Saban had some awful teams to work with.
I, for one, was not happy when he was introduced as the Trojans new head coach.

          • Yeah, I wasn’t thrilled either, then I saw his presser and I said he has a ton of energy, he might work out.

          • Calling Kiffin a NFL coach is a huge stretch … really hard to believe the creep is a coach at all.

  1. Clay Helton has to be the luckiest coach on the hot seat, because the media has convinced the non thinkers , which happen to be most fan boys, and other media members, that Helton is winning with the toughest schedule in college football, regardless of how WEAK the Pac 12 is. DON’T believe the media illusion, use you’re common sense, do you hear me, Lynn Swann?

    • You’re great at complaining about the current situation but I’ve yet to see you offer a solution. If they fire Helton, they’re going to have to hire someone else. Who?

      • Anybody that understands you win games at the line of scrimmage, and has tremendous leadership skills. Somebody that’s been there and done that, and knows you build a team from the inside out. Not by signing 13 receivers to scholarship while you have depth issues at other positions. We need a coach that emphasizes discipline, and can attract top assistants, and coordinator’s . This is USC, not UNLV, which means you have the capability to hire some of the best. Clay Helton is a stop gap assistant coach, he will never out coach Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh, and several others that will be in the way of a playoff run, he can’t even out coach, David Shaw of Stanford.

        • I don’t disagree but who out there is going to be that answer? Herman is showing he probably isn’t. Les Miles? An NFL guy? If so, who?

          • If it were up to me, then Greg Shiano would be on my list, because we wouldn’t have to be concerned with a buyout. Mark Dantonio of Michigan state , and I’d actually put a bug in the ear of David Shaw’s agent, because he’ll never win a national championship up at Stanford, be he’s still one of the better coaches out there. USC has to hire a been there, and done that, coach.

          • Shaw was supposedly offered the SC job and turned them down, even though his dad played there. D’Antonio is 60, would like a younger guy. Shiano would be a risky hire, USC isn’t Rutgers when it comes to getting kids into school and he was at Penn St in the 90’s and you know what that means with the media. I’d like Gruden, but he seems pretty happy working one day a week, 16-20 times a year for 6-8 million

          • I’d take a 60 year-old D’Antonio in a heartbeat, even if it’s for five years while USC rebounds from mediocrity. And from the looks of Jon Gruden, his mid section tells me he’s enjoying life to the fullest. And I’m not sure how the media will handle Shiano if he’s hired, but being the second in command at Ohio State, and handling the defensive coordinator duties, will definitely rehab any bad reputation he has.

          • Columbus Ohio media isn’t Politically Correct Los Angeles media, and don’t forget who sits on USC’s BOT

          • Shaw lived off Andrew Luck and Jim Harbaugh’s recruits to start off with. He’s not a great recruiter – even turned down Josh Rosen and took no QB. Was very late to offer Darnold and lost any chance at him because of that.

No coach is perfect. You may find that Shaw is about to be exposed somewhat as a guy who is more what STAN’s tightly wound admin loves (as opposed to Harbaugh who made a lot of waves) than what anyone else would really want.

STAN could be in some real trouble here (not inside though because he’ll never be let go) and Shaw’s profile might look a whole lot different by season’s end. If the Cardinal loses to feeble ARIZ in Tucson, you still want him? He has slipped very badly since he abused Gomer.

          • Stanford will always struggle to maintain superiority, because of the obvious. And everyone who coaches that team will struggle with recruiting, that’s not a reflection of who David Shaw is. Shaw’s perspective of football is what USC has gotten away from , and most of the Pac 12. And that’s tough defense, and a control tge line of scrimmage mentality, along with a running game. That alone puts Shaw at the top of my list.

          • Shaw would never move to another college job. Not happening.

I’m told the only job he would even consider outside of STAN would be the Indy Colt job. So keep dreaming. USC would never be able to take Shaw from STAN, regardless of money or anything else you can dream up.

          • Herman’s wife is a hottie but she also takes to social media when things go wrong, bit of a loose cannon that USC won’t tolerate.

        • Why doesn’t Helton hire Tim Davis? He’s at SMU, surely he would come if asked and he’s far better than what Helton has now.

          • I’m not sure he would come, and it appears Helton is too insecure to hire reputable established coaches.

          • I didn’t any reputable coaches/assistants were going to head out here with Haden still running things.
Lets say he loses a close game to Washington and wins all his other games and is kept for another year. His off season would be a good test to see if he can get some good assistants.

          • Unless some current assistants move on Helton would look weak and indecisive for hiring his permanent staff and already looking for answers elsewhere. Plus he seems to be too loyal and too much of a nice guy. Not happening. He has too many family friends, family, and Pendergast guys on this staff.

          • Since leaving USC in 2005, Davis has never stayed anywhere more than 2 years with stops at MIA Dolphins, ALA, MINN, UTAH, UF and SMU. Seems like a lot of schools are just fine with him moving on, because he always is.

Why would we want another USC retread who helped win during the Camelot Carroll years with players like Fred Matua, Winston Justice and Jacob Rodgers. We don’t have those players anymore. Just not sure why you think Davis is so great anymore.

You want Chow back too? He can now be found at a local high school. I’ll bet he comes cheap too. ucla just pulled that with KP and now they have the worst running game in all of college. Better be careful what you wish for.

          • I guess you’re happy with the current guy ? Davis would be an upgrade, SC could pass block and run when he was there. Unless you’ve got someone else in mind, I’d say go after Davis after the season is over.

          • Who said I was happy with SC’s current OL guy? Quit making up stories.

I just said Davis hasn’t done jack since he left USC (like Chow) and never sticks anywhere. You’d think he could do better than 3-4 SMU.

          • So Carroll’s been to two Super Bowls and won one, owns Seattle and is one of the highest paid, most revered coaches in the world.

Chow’s now a college football afterthought as a HS asst.

          • The problem is the Pete Carroll tree. We are repeatedly trying to recreate the past and it’s only made matters worse. It’s bad enough we have Kiffin and Sark assistants.

          • Think about that ! A Lane Kiffin assistant is our HC … Lane freaking Kiffin assistant and the guy was an assistant Suckisian…oh the humanity

  2. Sponge Bob shoulda never messed with these USC fans.

  3. Bye week can be an advantage or disadvantage. Helps with injuries but sometimes kills momentum

  4. I think I’ve said this about three times already, but we don’t play well on Thursday nights. I think we should take care of Cal, but Thursday night games have not been kind to us lately.

  5. Pac 12 does not have the players welfare at heart. Making Cal travel on a short week and play a team that had a bye. Not fair. I believe that has happened to SC several times on Thursday games. Maybe why they struggle. Noon starts in the heat of Arizona is not kind as well.

    • You think the school Presidents care about player welfare ? You think Larry Scott cares about player welfare or competitive games ? It’s all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

  6. Many of you here are acting like Cal is Goliath and that we should be afraid. Far from it. The truth is USC should take care of buisness. Clay Helton and Clancy Pendergast should be as ready as ever coming off three consecutive wins and a bye week. If this game is close it will be a disappointment.

    • USC should win by 21 minimum. Even woeful ASU beat CAL by 10 at home.

The Trojans should be tuned and ready to go, with another slaughter of defenseless ORE to follow. Reality comes the week after in Seattle. That’s when we’ll see just how far we’re gonna go this season. Should be a great game on Nov. 12.

          • Beating ND and ucla is always nice, especially in the same year – even when they are bad. Bragging rights are always big and it keeps the Trolls defenseless.

If USC loses even one of those two games, the heat will be all over Gomer and he won’t be able to use the “work in progress” line. That said, I think Gomer is up to winning out except for UW. After our subhuman start, that’s not bad at all.

          • We can brag to these trolls. That’s it. The rest of college football wouldn’t even listen to what we have to say.

          • That’s what happens when you lose to ‘Bama 52-6, a weak STAN team 27-10 and you throw away a game to solid but not great UTAH. USC’s gonna have to live in the bed it made for itself. Them’s the rules.

          • God, you people are TEDIOUS!!

Put on your friggin’ San Diego State fan gear and STFU.

          • Go play ball with Lonbozo and Pennywise! Pennywise has a surprise for you! Go play ball now!

          • Poor Troller is having a lover’s spat with Jacqui the trans. Better make a house call for the Dr. Rachel Maddow to come over stat and smooth things over.

          • What did you expect with Helton and crew. We aren’t even a blip on the radar! No one is intimidated! Those days are long gone! It will be like this until Swann dumps everyone!

          • He’s going to have beat WA twice. It’s a big “if” that SC will get into the conference championship. I agree 100%! He’s Heisman worthy!

          • Preston…not taking last visit to Arizona. SC is his last visit and wants to decide early.

          • Andy, good news bro. 5⭐ Power Forward Billy Preston 6-10 230LBs will be on his Official Visit this Friday to USC. I think we end up getting him. To be continued!

  7. They’re all waiting for Pete Carroll to walk in the door and save the day. And they love hand me downs like Lane Kiffin, Ed O, Clay Helton, Steve Sarkisian and Clay Helton again. It’s really fu**ing mind boggling how some of these people are ok with this.

    • I know! We can get Doh-rell or the NewWeasel! Then they’ll be really happy with dumped Btech trash!

  8. Good point, where have I heard this before? Oh right, me! Two days ago. Thanks for the attribution, bloggerman!

  9. And now the rumor is Brandon McCoy 5* Center and good friend of Thornton is waiting to see what Preston does because he wants to play with another high profile player. Another battle between Arizona and SC for him, but Arizona just recently got a commitment from the #1 Center so we are looking good for him. SC is making the huge push this cycle in recruiting. We may get rolling Saturday night with Preston!

    #ANDYISWINNING!
