Beware Benched Stanford QBs

USC v StanfordStanford coach David Shaw said backup QB Keller Chryst will start this week against Arizona instead of starter Ryan Burns. That means USC lost to the Cardinal’s current backup QB.

And remember in 2012, No. 2 USC lost to Stanford, 21-14. The Cardinal QB was Josh Nunes, who was eventually replaced by Kevin Hogan. USC could have beaten Stanford this year if its backup QB (Sam Darnold) had started.

  1. Can we get off the ” could haves” . We lost and were physically manhandled in the trenches by whats turned out to be a not so good Stanford team.

    • I agree with your assessment.
Is trolling really worth it when you have to be so measured in your comments?

  2. Is this ‘Inside Arizona’ now or does he have some hatred for USC? Is there a backup writer who can come in and show Scott how its done?

    • A scout from the Pittsburgh Pirates told me to go play two years in JC ball and we would go from there. I didn’t listen. Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Scott Wolf loves talking in those terms and loves saying how he was right.

          • I ask because of course depending on the team and coach the second batter tends to be asked to sacrifice if the leadoff man gets on. So the second batter often is really talented in both bunting as well as hitting behind the runner on hit and run plays. Was your leadoff player a good base stealer?

          • My senior year my brother became the head coach and he had me at leadoff and the 2 spots. It felt like I rarely got to swing away. I batted 326.

  3. Cal’s Chris Borrayo: “I don’t know if you guys understand this about USC: Class is not in their name”

  4. USC offered 3-Star Strong side DE Aliki Vamihi (6-3 244lbs) 5.03 in the 40. From Kahuku, HI and it looks like he will eventually commit to the Trojans. BYU, Colorado and Oregon State are his only other offers. I know we haven’t been hitting on all our highly ranked players, but I’m a little concerned about the number of 3-Star kids in the class, but more worried about them being on the DLINE.

    Any thoughts?

    • But if we don’t recruit him and he has one tackle against SC…The Flounder will then question why we let him go…

    • At least it can be said USC isn’t just recruiting off lists – a common complaint against lazy staffs.

Who knows if this new USC staff knows how to evaluate and pick talent well. No track record, good or bad.

Star rankings are often way off, but too many three-stars is not the USC tradition. We’ll just have to wait and see.

      • Thankfully Tee Martin is money on signing day.
Speaking of signing day, early signing day period is in two weeks for Basketball. We already have Jordan Usher commited, we can make a splash in the college basketball world if we sign Billy Preston. I do know this, the conference is on alert with Enfield and staff. They’re on the trail hard!

          • Mr Hawaii how so? Kevin O’Neil left him with out any talent, Jacobs was really the shining star, Enfield landed Jordan McLaughlin and Elijah Stewart they’re doing fine, he landed Bennie Boatwright and Chimezie Metu they had really good true freshman seasons also. Andy made the NCAA in his third season by taking a doormat team and turning them into a competitive ball club.

          • It was one and done in the NCAA. The Kids were over their heads. The player exodus from Andy’s team bodes trouble for this year. Swanny will throw Andy out with the trash when the season is over.

          • No way he is let go. We were the laughingstock of the conference. Washington State was having better teams then Kevin O’Neil. I have to disagree with you, respectfully. But Enfield, Tony Bland and Jason Hart getting kids that we never traditionally get. We’ll beat UCLA again, we should beat Arizona, but we should also beat Utah, Colorado, etc.

          • Why would you expect USC to beat the ruins and UA after losing so much talent? The writers predict a down year.

          • But this year the ruins have a top five recruiting class coming in and we lost Jacobs who I thought was our MVP last year.

          • Our Freshman played like upperclassman last season. Bennie Boatwright and Chimezie Metu were as good as advertised for true freshman. Elijah Stewart also took his game to another level. McLaughlin also took his game up a peg. Plus we have some quality transfers and and freshman. Look out for DeAnthony Melton and Jonah Mathews to play huge minutes. You have to remember that Enfield had nothing to work with and has his own players in there now.

      • Well Washington had 17 out of 25 two or three star recruits in Jake Browning’s class according to Scout.

        • WA doesn’t have a 3⭐️ Coach! USC does! Therefore, the analogy is not equal.

  5. And SC just rattled off three straight victories with its BackUp Quarterback. big whoop!

  6. Why isn’t the blogger trashing David Shaw for not doing this at the beginning of the year? Mr. Shaw has always been high on his esteem list, but when Stanford struggles, it’s never the coach’s fault.
