USC Morning Buzz: Fan Friendly Takes New Meaning This Week

"1113_SPT_LDN-L-USC-CAL-MB"Cal ran 118 plays last week against Oregon. The game took more than four hours. But — crucially — the game took place on a Friday night. Now the Bears play USC on a Thursday night at the Coliseum. That means any fans who work Friday morning could be pretty tired.

“It’ll be 1 or 2 a.m. (by the time I’m back from the game),” USC wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster said.

When the Pac-12 forced teams to play midweek games several years ago, USC asked to play Fridays because of traffic and work concerns. But TV contracts require Thursday telecasts and that creates hardship for fans who want to see the game and work Friday. Unless you are Miley Cyrus, who attended the USC-Cal game in 2014, also played on a week night. Full story on late finish here.

  1. My family won’t be there. Most of us work in education and have to work the next day . It sucks.

  2. 118 plays ?!! Is it just me, or can anybody else see what the Pac 12 is turning into? The SEC, and Big Ten will be looking down at us for the next decade if things don’t change, soon . Muscle, and strength wins out every time in the playoffs , please believe that.

    • SC will most likely be underdogs in the future with Helton against those schools. Besides us being down the whole conference is weak this year besides UW and Utah who are still giving up points. On the up side you have teams like Colorado, Washington St and Cal getting better each year since they’ve hired their new coaches so the conference may actually be growing up.

    • Pac 12 and Big 12 both. It’s the Power 3. The Conversation/Lobbying on how a One Loss Non-Conference champ from the Big 10/SEC/ACC (Michigan/Texas A&M/Louisville) should knock out a One Loss Pac 12 or Big 12 Conference Champ due their “Weak Conferences” has already started. Don’t believe that the Pac 12 is on the Voting Committee since Haden resigned either.

      • It’s easy. If UW wins out, they’re in the Playoff – and that’s only because they’re in the Pac-12. If they lose one game, they’re out. They’re the ones who chose to have a horrible out-of-conference sched.

SC, STAN and ucla were the schools who had the scheds and the players to get into the dance and all three flopped all over the place.

It doesn’t matter who’s on the Voting Committee. Nobody from the Pac-12 even remotely deserves to get in except UW, and that’s only if the Huskies go undefeated.

        • Bama could lose 3 games and still be in it. They get drubbed by Ole Piss at home last year but get top seed and then get MichSt in the 1st round because Saban was scared of Oklahoma, who were not afraid of Saban.

      • In the old days maybe , game has changed … wasn’t the final game like 45-40 last year ? some D , though Bama’s D probably scored 30.
Texas didn’t exactly win their title over SC with D … of course had Kiffin not been SC OC , the Trojans would have put up 60 that nite.

    • Agreed !!! 118 plays in one 60 min game is nothing but BS. Do you think this Chip Kelly Duck no huddle quick snap offense increases injuries on the field of play. You betcha. Should be OUTLAWED.

  3. If Helton try to sit on a small lead and the Defense goes into a prevent we could be in trouble

  4. Having just returned from the east coast the ridiculous premise that these games give the conference national exposure is a joke. I tried to watch the Cal game last week but it kicked off at 10:30 and ended after 2:30. No one is watching nationally and hardly anyone but hardcore fans of the schools playing are watching out West. Time to ditch this ridiculous premise, I don’t see a lot of Big 10 and SEC games on Friday night. Thursday night football is best left to the WAC, Big West and Big East.

  5. Neither team has a defense. USC has proven over the last 4 weeks their defense can stop teams from moving the ball. Darnold and company have to play smart all 4 quarters and put the game away and not allow Cal any momentum or a thought they have a chance.. Defense wins games.. USC can and will probably run the score up on Cal!

  6. The bigger issue is the death of the Cal/USC rivalry. When was the last time the teams played on a Saturday? Why is the Cal game always during a weekday?

    • The last two games in Berkeley were played on Saturday. But I see your point. Long gone are the tough games and smack talk with Jeff Tedford and DeSean Jackson.

      • Yeah, you’re right. It just seems like I haven’t been to a game for so long since last year was on Halloween and 2013 was on my anniversary. The lack of smack talk probably has less to do with scheduling and more to do with the fact that they haven’t beat us since 2003.

        • Its for sure been a one sided match up. I think Cal and Oregon St are the only teams who haven’t beaten SC since the sanctions. I still think SC wins convincingly.

  7. How many people will take their young kid to this game ? This is the problem with ALL sports now, the games are played for the TV dollar, they could care less if you get home at 1am, if your kid can stay awake to see the game, if you have a good time before the game, they don’t care. How many world series games will end before midnight on the east coast ? And the dopey commissioner wonders why kids are staying away from baseball in droves.

    • Oh, poor baby. 1 am past your bedtime?

Too bad your kid can’t stay awake to watch every minute of USC football live. That’s such a shame, he’ll probably need a shrink. What a dope you are.

      • I’d try to explain my post to you queenie but I can’t write it out for you in crayon. Now run along so you don’t miss the Ellen DeGeneres show

      • Thursday night games should not start no later than 6 P.M. on the west coast. 7:30 P.M. does make a big difference. Game won’t be over until around 11 PM. You probably won’t be home until 1 AM. Then the kid needs to be up by 7 AM. Yes, all normal boy’s that are USC fans dream of a night like this, but next day they pay the price. On the other hand, what do the kids do in school on a Friday? It is usually not as tough as the classes are being held Monday through Thursday.
To answer your question if the boy is a ucla fan, the kid will kick and scream about not going and he will hate his parents because he was forced to watch the pitful sewage that is spewing over at ruinwood.

        • Jacqui the trans can’t relate to those of us who actually work for a living or are capable of having children.

        • Don’t forget to take your crying towel to your kid’s next shrink appointment. Poor Belichick Boy’s always getting stuck in traffic. Maybe some therapy will settle your nerves wimp.

          • Stuck being a wimp is your problem Belichick Boy. Always have been, always will be. Now go complain somewhere else about your crappy 7-6 job in traffic. That’s all you’re good for wimp.

          • Jacqui the trans like all rah rahs reflexively backs the hired help over the student athletes and fans.

      • Ya, you 8-5ers make me laugh toy boy. Typical clock-in sap! Don’t forget to claim your mileage reimbursement loser.

          • We can’t all be wimps like you Belichick Boy. Still got his poster up in your room? That’s what I thought. Maybe it’s time you took it down and tossed your blanky away with it.
