USC Morning Buzz: It’s Time For The Wednesday Notes Column

darnold-asuWith a Thursday game, the notes column is early this week. where I make my game prediction among items on Sam Darnold, the Pac-12’s concern for “student-athletes” and address whether Washington can go undefeated.

First, the game prediction. USC 47, Cal 28. This might be closer if Cal were not coming in on six-days rest against a Trojan team just off a bye week. The only question is whether Ronald Jones or Aca’Cedric Ware gains more yards and if the game ends before midnight. Full column here

  1. Even with a win tomorrow against Cal, the truth remains Helton hasn’t done anything as a head coach yet. In all honesty, he’s riding on Darnold’s back prolonging his learning process at this point. Of course I enjoy watching my team kicking other guys’ butts, but I’m much more excited about the emergence of Sam Darnold than about the possibility of Helton leading the team to the top. The ride might be pretty pleasant at the moment for some, but wait until the team plays more legit opponents at Washington and those rivalry games later. By then, we should be able to discover much more concrete and accurate answers on Helton’s true coaching potential or the lack thereof for the future.

        • Obsolete??? It’s as current and ongoing as can be! Perhaps, your logic is obsolete. lol.

          • Its been looked at from every angle.Much I agree with. However it changes nothing. For this moment we are left to play Cal.I for one Trojan will look to enjoy this game.
Then look to hand the Ducks a huge deserved whooping. When Washington comes, the story changes again.
For now its to enjoy Cal game.!!!

          • Ya perhaps my logic is obsolete. After everyone on the blog has beat it to death with countless posts and we have all already decided Helton will be here all this season and possibly next,

          • Don’t include me in that group that decided on that. Helton’s future still depends on the remaining games .

    • We already know Helton has no peas! He doesn’t have an intimidating presence and it shows on the field with every play. Let’s not be delusional and just face reality. Helton is prolonging the inevitable.

      • I totally agree, but USC fan boys like to pretend, and actually believe the Trojans have the toughest schedule in college football

        • Awe Fred, I don’t think the schedule is very tough, but the media “experts” put it out there it was the toughest in the nation. It is rather quite obvious now the experts, like the government, is corrupt.

          • I hardly pay attention to the media, that’s why I keep clashing with people on this blog, I’d rather use my common sense, and eye test.

      • Yes, I tend to agree with you there, but what if Helton runs the table or if he beats both SUCLA and The Domers? The real possibility in that scenario would be Helton staying put for at least a couple more years, so we should be prepared for it, too.

        • I’m assuming Schnozen will be back for Btech. They’ll be ready. ND will also be ready. Helton will fade under the pressure. I don’t like losing, but I’d prefer Helton gone!

          • The Thug U doctors declared him okay to play. His dad, a doctor said no, he is not okay to play. The dad is smart. Why let his son take a beating when he plays for Thug U behind that porous line and let his nfl stock drop like a ton of bricks. If “deer in the headlights” Rosen was smart, he would transfer from Pizza Delivery U and go to something like Texas A M. There, their expectations are just as low as Thug U. Besides, he could play for Nozen, his former OC.

          • I don’t see Schnozen doing much in the NFL. He’s not a nice person, he’s brittle, I don’t see him lasting long if he makes it at all. Right now he’s probably the 3rd or 4th best QB in the conference.

          • I am not impressed with Rosen. I think he has regressed from his freshman year. I am not counting the injuries. I am talking about his play. he tried to carry the team on his shoulders for the aTm game and lost. I think that is when he checked out. That was to be the showcase game for him to win the Heisman, and go to the playoff. After that loss, he was done. He will go through the motions and not put effort into his college career. Oh well. I would not draft him. He is too brittle and average arm.

          • He misses on long passes just like Hundley but he can’t take off and bail out the offense with 10 yard runs like Hundley did so well. He’s a net minus.

          • So Btech has completely checked out! No Schnozen, but they do have Fa-Awful! Oh wait…they’ve got nothing! Well, Helton should have a W there. We’ll see!

  2. I am still taking USC 45, Cal 0. First shut out of the season and Cal is exposed. Pass for a few scores, then run run run all night long. They can’t score if they don’t have the ball.

  3. If USC’s play calling isn’t all over the place , then the game should be over at halftime. Because Clay Helton still struggles to take advantage of what other teams gives him defensively.

  4. Huskies will probably lose one or two of their remaining games. They are about a year early for the current track they are on. Very young team but havent had many bad games yet and are due for one. Utah and at Wash St will be tough.

  5. First in light of current coaching I fear the wrong USC will show up. I am afraid the complacent soft practice squad will be out there showing a lack of determination.
Next I really don’t see where Cal is at a disadvantage having to play with the 6 day rest. If they had played on Saturday maybe there’s something but Friday isn’t that big of a deal.
Finally I hope the team shows some class by helping Cal’s players up after they flatten them.

    • Help up the other team ? Uh, no. Ever watch the Army-Navy game ? Those kids have all kinds of class but they WILL NOT help each other up after a play.

  6. Let’s bring on 2 loss Tom Herman to help finish out the season and bring back USC to its former periodic glory.

  7. SC PRACTICES are still soft compared to top teams practices…never going to be a consistent top 10 team. Wonder who else consistently has practices in shorts, etc…the talent level is there…tough games remain.

  8. A question arises if SC players keep rebounding and end up in Washington for an away game with undefeated Huskies: will the Pac-12 refs skew the calls to WA like they have in past to keep WA in the running for a BCS slot and TV ratings? That is what they have done in the past. They put their thumb on the scale. SC would need some luck to win on the road at Husky stadium but luck is the residue of preparation and strategy and the factor of the fans. Browning is good but not like the wild card Darnold or game breakers Ro Jo and Ajax. USC needs to begin assembling a bunch of referee monitors and bring the gaze of the public on the refs to call a fair game. Let the players decide it on the field. WA will come out in that game provoking, bad mouthing and sucker punching SC to get players thrown out feeling the refs will lay off them. Get your binoculars out and bring signs with index fingers to point at the refs.
