USC Not In College Football Playoff Top 25 Poll

The first College Football Playoff poll was released today and, not surprisingly, USC is not among the top 25 teams. Alabama, Clemson, Michigan and Texas A&M are the top 4 teams. Washington, thanks to the lousy Pac-12, is No. 5.

  1. USC has not beaten any worthy opponent this season, so why would they be in the top 25 ? The only people SC is fooling are themselves, and as long as they continue to set the bar at Mountain West Conference, standards, they will always be looked over. Fight On…San Diego State !!

    • Fred, you are getting as cranky about the quality of USC’s play as I am about the election. I think we both need to take a deep breath & relax a bit.

    • It comes down to the U-dub Trojans game. If SC wins, it’s a good season, if not, very average.

        • A loss to UW but wins over UCLA and ND will make USC feel. Enter about a mediocre season and save Helton his job.

          • With the players leaving at the end of this year, there is really not a lot of hope Helton has the coaching skill to pull a rabbit out of a hat. We will be stuck in 8 & 5 type seasons for at least the next 2 years unless Lynn Swann stops being patient with USC football mediocrity.

    • Fred you are right, we have one quality win over Colorado, a bad loss against Stanford, and gave up the most points to Bamas offense all year (52 pts).our performance against Cal last week was to be expected as they give up 42 p,us pts a game. Oregon St rushed for 474 yards against Cal. Our october wins were against colorado, Cal, arizona, and arizona st not exactly world beaters this year except upstart Colorado. We could still win a weak Pac12 south though

    • Simply put–a win vs UW will rank USC. A loss and even winning the rest will leave the team unranked. Provided they are bowl eligible (would be a total collapse not to be) and they make a minor bowl.

  2. Max Browne has been given permission to check in with other schools!

I agree with Fred.. Nothing to show yet! #notworthyof25

  3. UW’s not out of the top 4 because of the Pac-12. It’s because they scheduled RUT, PORT ST and IDAHO as fillers. If they win out, which they should, they’re in. Good message to teams that like to cupcake it too much.

    • Rutgers was scheduled years ago when they finished 8-5 . What is going to be our excuse in a couple of years if we go 12-0 with Rice and Fresno st on the schedule? Quality wins by USC? One close one over Colorado at Home. Stanford loss looking pretty bad and we will never explain the thrashing we took fro Alabama. I think we might have the lowest points scored against Alabama all year including their usual one soft opponent

      • You’re the first person I’ve heard actually defend UW’s weak schedule. I’m sorry but using RUT as your best out-of-conference set-up just doesn’t cut it, in any year. They’re officially a cupcake.

Obviously, the selection committee felt the same way which is why they dumped on UW.

USC and Gomer just weren’t nearly ready for ALA. Of course, hardly anyone else really is either.

        • So when we play Rice and Fresno St and Notre Dame in 2022 which is our schedule what will you say?

          • I’ll say we played Notre Dame. That’s a team that’s never viewed as a cupcake going in on anyone’s schedule and is usually viewed as a major threat. Every team can get away with two out-of-conference cupcakes – but not all three.

          • You were talking about 2022. Read your own post.

And I’d have a much better chance of beating RUT this year than ND if you were talking about 2016.

          • ND, RICE and FRESNO ST is viewed as a much more difficult schedule than RUT, PORT ST and IDAHO. Fact.

You think RUT is comparable to ND or ucla as an opponent? Good luck with that.

          • Might want to look at Fresno St and Rices record. Cbs sports ranks both programs in the bottom 25 of FBS

        • And Uw clobbered Stanford. We cant say that? I know everybody says Darnolds the difference. But they beat us in the trenches like they usually do. UW did the same last year at the coliseum to us at Drunk Steves last game

    • Mountain West doesn’t have 4 teams in the top 25, but your hyperbole is well-taken.

  4. UDub shouldn’t be in it with that OOC schedule… They should punish the Baylors and the UDubs of the world.

  5. USC does not deserve to be in top 25. Finish the year strong & they should get in the 18-25 range. UW ‘s very weak out of conference is more of a drag on their ranking than the PAC 12 schedule. If UW loses , it is probable that the PAC 12 and Big 12 will not have a representative in the CFP.

  6. No, it’s not thanks to the lousy Pac-12 schedule that Washington is excluded from top-4 status. It’s because the university of washington chose to schedule the sisters of mercy in non-conference. If they scheduled like USC schedules (Alabama/Notre Dame), they’d be in the top 1 or 2 with their current Pac-12 schedule. Peterson needs to get that school with the program – you can’t play the weak sisters and expect to win a Nattie.

    • Well UW has added Wisconsin and Michigan to their schedule. Rutgers and these teams were scheduled before Petersen got there,

      • Yep, Washington now has a good enough coach, thanks to Pat Haden, to schedule better non-conference teams and compete with them. We are going to experience in the next years of the damage Haden created while AD.

  7. Texas A & M overrated, ot win at home over a very bad UCLA team. awin over a 3 loss tenn team that could easily have 5 losses. SEC overall to their standards having a down year, no respect for Pac12 obviously.

  8. Max Browne , best of luck. Good guy and actually would do well at a school like Stanford with a quality offensive line. Based on how our offensive line played the first of the year he did pretty well .

  9. Trojans not in top 25 not surprising. Only one win over a ranked opponent Colorado and that was a narrow one at home

  10. Doesnt help the Pac12 in CFP that USC got beat by Bama 52-6. Kent State only gave up 48 pts to Alabama

  11. Texas A & M had Prarie St, UCLA, and New Mexico as non conf opponents. Washington Rutgers, portland St and Idaho, whats the difference ?

    • Simple. ucla’s not viewed traditionally as a cupcake. They’re thought of as a top 17-20 team historically. Rutgers (621-603 all-time with only 9 bowl appearances) is probably 40+.

  12. Look at the CFP committee representation from West Coast. Tyrone Willingham who was fired at UW after going0-12. Condelezza Rice Stanford and Rob Mullens Oregon AD . No wonder UW didnt fare well

  13. Would we be having this conversation if the USC administration really cared about USC football the way Alabama & Ohio St does, which USC is much richer than both but looks for mediocre HC’s and pays cheap? I can’t do it, but why doesn’t someone with some clout go ask Max Nikias why he has let the football program whither away in mediocrity?
