Some Perspective Is Needed When Discussing Cal Game

bush-uclaI have advocated more carries for Ronald Jones all season so I’m probably considered pro-Jones. But a couple things from the Cal game continue to irritate me: Why do fans insist on making Reggie Bush comparisons based on one game against the nation’s No. 126-ranked defense? And why did people decide Jones regained his mojo against that defense? Perhaps more than one performance should decide that. Like, say, against Washington.

And Cal is now officially the nation’s worst run defense this week (No. 128).

  1. Jones had a good game against a bad defense. Anyone who thinks he’s got his form back let alone calling him the next Reggie must think Prop 64 has already passed.

  2. There is no doubt that Rojo has Mojo. I just want to see him be able to use it against the likes of Washington. If comparisons are appropriate then remember Reggie was not in a one back offense. Marcus Allen, Charles White, and Garrett were not one back offensive players. The best is having a speedster and a boom back- thunder and lightning- Wolf and Helfand

  3. Ronald Jones has lots of talent, but I doubt if he wl develop under Clay Helton, and that finesse offense.

      • Nope, I’m not saying that at all, I said running backs have difficult times developing their running skills in a spread offense.

        • But you seem to agree that Justin Davis has developed under these coaches/offense. Last year, four of the top five rushing teams in the Pac-12 ran spread offenses.

It is debatable whether USC runs a true spread offense. Running a zone-read doesn’t make them a spread offense because USC almost always keep the tight end on the field, instead of lining up in four wide receiver sets.

          • Remember when the media asked Sam Darnold after the Colorado game what offense they run? He said he thinks its the spread. ..LOL I’m not sure Clay Helton even knows, because they are all over the place with that nonsense.

          • What do you call your offense when it uses pro style, read option AND spread principles? These are all new offenses and NOBODY really knows what label to put on them. The only reason YOU label USC’s offense a spread is because “spread” has a negative connotation in your mind so naturally you attach “spread” to the offense USC runs. Just because you don’t have a fullback it doesn’t mean you by default run a spread. Helen is on the right track and it’s not accurate to say that USC runs a spread offense. You just like to talk, but you don’t know what you’re talking about. Your thinking is way behind where modern football is. Why beat a freshman QB up for not being able to label this offense when no coach could either? You’re negative and ignorant and that’s a bad combination.

          • Colorado head coach Mike MacIntyre said USC is running a spread offense. I’ll trust his objective word over Sunshine Pumpers like you and Hillary.

          • You are the same guy… Had to be.

Answer the first question in my post, Marv (or Troy and whoever else you are) and I’ll talk to you about it.

          • Ouch! Poor Clay the brainless rah rah and the Dr. Rachel Maddow of inside USC are such dorks.

    • Justin Davis has more power than RoJo, but more importantly, better vision. That’s the part that can’t be taught. Hopefully, we’ll get Davis back by UW. He could really help our cause. RoJo’s a good, not great talent. Davis is better all-around. We need Davis!

      • Nuts, Jack B and Fredrick !! Common sense tells me Rojo and JD are both exceptional running backs. Quickness, vision, and downfield speed are just a few of their “I’m here to WIN” assets. I have seen enough of both to know that USC offensive line predominance will open the gates for RoJo and JD BIG YARDAGE.

    • My earlier Norv Turner Rumor is gaining momentum, resigned from Vikings this morning. He has a College Job lined up somewhere.

      • Umm resigned after his coach said this week the offense was embarrassing. He was given the courtesy to resign. He’s day is so over in football.

      • Norv Turner is soft in my eyes. He was soft in San diego. You want someone that is tough and is disciplined. If I had my choice, I would take Jack Del Rio. His teams play hard and tough. Bring in Teford as the offensive coordinator and you have something.

    • RJ will succeed as the OL does.. As long as you see improvement from the OL, Ro Jo will dominate, because he hits the hole quickly, makes it difficult for DL and LB to react

  4. It’s not a good comparison to make. The offenses were not the same as today. The offensive lines were stellar, as opposed to today. USC had some excellent fullbacks and even developed some of them into great tailbacks; like Marcus Allen and Ricky Bell.

  5. Why does the Pac-12 even ALLOW USC to play such retched refuse as Cal, anyway? Parumph!

    • Cal,or for that matter any Pac 12 team that looses its first 7 DBs to injury.Plus other key D players, should be required to play in a sub division made up of similar teams.(First subject to SW and Petros review. )And from this day forward all fan’s who compare Ro jo to Bush(thought that was last year) should first wait for results from a Wolf Poll.

  6. Most comments I’ve seen on Rojo’s performance have been tempered with the knowledge that it was against Cal. Only the blogger thinks that people think otherwise. I’m hoping, however, he can do the exact same thing against a bad Oregon run D.
