Discuss The USC-UCLA Game

This game actually lived down to its billing. It was a snoozefest and the small crowd (71,137) was the lowest since 2010 (71,105). USC seemed like it had a Washington hangover the first quarter. And Adoree Jackson gave up to two TD passes. Now all that is left is to see if Colorado beats Utah. Otherwise, USC goes to the Pac-12 title game again.

  1. Sooooo. Looks like I was just a little off on my game prediction. I just hope we beat Cal and Apr into a bowl game.

  2. Adoree also broke up 4 passes. What a lame lead thought. Each time UCLA scored SC punched right back, and against what is widely understood as a formidable defense. I honestly don’t know what type of scenario would’ve produced anything other than what SW posted. Fairly dominant win, great composure amid potential trap game, team looks not to have any let down. But I don’t get paid for taking the cynical angle, so what do I know…

  3. It took wolf three tries to twitter the phrase, “Is the Rose Bowl hosting a prep game tonite.” He wrote “peep” on his first two attempts. Only wolf could do that.

    • Maybe 45,000, both end zones empty like they were playing Oregon State., Huge holes of empty seats even on the 50s when the blimp showed the stadium from up above. The scalpers took a bath on this one.

      • Yes, UCLA did suck this year. However, both teams displayed more class than it seems you are capable of.

        • Show some class yourself and stop posting on this board. Sure you creeps have one on an ucla site. The ‘ruins showed a lot of class after their first TD celebrating like a bunch of losers causing a penalty. Put the Trojans at midfield after kickoff went out of bounds making it easier to tie the score quickly.

          • You’d think he would at least wait a day before showing up here. He seems totally unfazed by being humiliated on national television and being eliminated from all bowl consideration…like it is normal to be one of the worst programs in the country.

          • They must have known that would be quickly thrashed within an inch of their lives so they better make the most of their brief moment of joy.

        • You consider submission to be class, f uuclan. When we lose we don’t all run on your boards telling you how great you were. Losing is unacceptable to Trojans. That’s why you will always be losers.

    • 88 you and most the fans I encountered last night are nothing like the other Bruin visitors to this blog.

    • That’s the difference between a Trojan and a f uuclan. You expect to lose. It doesn’t even bother you. You are more worried with not offending us. What a loser school filled with losers like you.

  4. It wasn’t perfect, but any win against those blue-wearing teddy bears is sugar sweet! Another game where Darnold and Defense carried the team. It’s amazing how much of a gamer Darnold is! He has a way of bailing the team out of so many predicaments with his various weapons! Gotta clean up those boneheaded procedure penalties, though.

    We Are SC! Fight On!

    • It’s great to think that Darnold is only getting better! 2 INTs didn’t seem to rattle him at all.

      • Yes, that’s another thing that makes him special. And even with a few picks, he does so many unbelievable things with his passes and feet, and more importantly, he finds ways to score.

        • He takes a hit and keeps on ticking, and wasn’t afraid to run that f uuclan defensive back out of bound on the interception run back.

        • Like Coach Mora said, not only is he mobile, but he keeps his head up to throw accurate passes downfield. Sure there are more mobile QBs, but once they run they just run. Sorry..I’m not explaining it right. haha.

    • This game was more than Darnold and the Defense. Rojo and Hampton had great games. Nice of Scott though to find the few pimples in this game.

      • You criticize Scott’s nitpicking on the game, and yet you go around to nitpick on other comments? Hope you’re not craving meaningless arguments. I’ll keep my views on the game, and you keep yours. Fair enough?

        • Wow somebody needs a hug. Actually agree that Darnold and D where great, but is was more than just that combination. Hampton saved Darnold when he threw it up in double coverage and he went up and got the ball for TD. Rojo turned the game around with his 60 yard TD run.
          #dontyoueverquestionme

          • Hello? Are you a bonehead or something? Of course it takes the whole f’g team to win any football game! Always! But certain individuals stood out and I’ve pointed them out. You got a problem with that?

          • Yes and I pointed some additional ones out. Have you got a problem with that?
            #thanksforplaying

          • All I said was it was more than just Darnold and the D. Then you went into a hissy fit like a 10 year old.
            #lightenupfrancis

          • Alright, I think we’ve been caught in a negative mode with our going back and forth last few days. I see you’re a Trojan fan, and I’ve got no intention to spread dissension among us as an alum and a fan. I withdraw everything I told you prior to this, and I hope you do the same. Fight on!

  5. Bruins were truly, truly awful. The 50-0 game a few years ago was closer. Good to see O-line more effective at run blocking. Now, need to take down ND.

    • For sure. I remember biting all my nails off when UCLA was at the goal line praying to satan, please don’t let the magic of those all white unis let them ruin this perfect 50-0 memory. Satan always pulls through for me when I’m at my lowest.

  6. Truth be told that was a pretty sloppy performance. However let’s be honest, we were all on here in August saying that 9 -3 , 8 -4 would be a successful season. This team and clay Helton have exceeded my expectations this year. So I am not going to nit pick little deficiencies now.

    • That’s too bad. SC should expect the national championship every year. I thought even Lane Kiffin got 9 wins per season, usually.

    • The team was sky high for last week’s show down against #4 Washington. You knew there had to be a let down. But with Darnold this team still wins the trap games.

  7. A suspect was arrested tonight at the SC library for committing a lewd act. Now we know what happened to GoTroy22!

    • You mean the Doheny Library, f uuclan? That explains why your stadium was half empty. You dorks were at the library on a Saturday night instead of going to your annual beat down.

      • No, your library. And I find most of the people on this board have some class. You have none along with a couple of others. Some of us were raised in an era of sportsmanship and congratulating your opponent when they won. I competed in high school and in college and against USC. The actual athletes did not behave like you. It was a different time.

        • You think submission is class. You ran over here right after your humiliating loss which shows you really don’t mind being a loser. And save you pretending to be an athlete. The actual athletes takes losing to their rival hard.

          • Submission? Sorry buddy, but you have no clue.

The reality is this years team sucked and the game went to the better team. I have seen over 50 of these games and at some point they just aren’t as big of a deal to me win or lose than they used to be. Grow up.

          • Kissy 86er has seen over 50 ruin-Trojan games? How old are you, old codger? You come across like a 5 year old. That’s a lot of abuse for an old man to take.

    • You would know about lewd acts, Kissy 86er. That’s all you do to the rah rahs when you come over to this board.

  8. Trojans did not play their best and there is still improvement to be made. But, they found a way to dominate and win. It wasn’t too long ago that this program was losing games like tonights, Progress is being made. Trojans may not be back, but they are on the way. Final thought: did not look like 71,000 people were in the stadium. Crowd looked very very sparse on TV.

  9. Slow start WHY? Happy with the win The D, once they woke up played well. Sam forced the ball a little to much against a good team those turn overs could be real trouble. needs to let the game come to him did a nice job of scrambling around. was not impressed with the O line. just did not dominate the whole game and at times was the weak spot Enjoy the win and get ready for nd

  10. I enjoyed the game with my lady. Didn’t have to worry about keeping up an online chat. Much like the old days. Was nice.

  11. UCLA has a good D with VanDerDon’t, Young, and Tak whatever his name is, yet they could not contain Darnold. Good sign for SC’s future.

    • The D wore down because of an incompetent OL as we have seen all year. UCLA had some success running in the 1st quarter with our 2 bigger backs and went away from it in the 2nd quarter.

At the end of the day, SC was much better than UCLA as anticipated. A vary solid performance refreshingly absent of hot dogging and taunting. Very businesslike. SC is the best team in the league but I think Colorado will hold serve and keep you out of the PAC-12 Championship game. They have a solid, well-coached squad.

      • When the score went to 20-14 ucla panicked and started to rely on ucla’s qb arm. That is when USC teed off and forced ucla to punting so often

        • Pretty typical in that they have rotated the backs all year. The line is poor and they should have continued running the ball with our bigger backs that could move the pile. Soso is just so-so and runs soft. Polamalu has not really adjusted all year.

Relying on the arm of a walk-on backup QB won’t beat many teams, let alone one playing as well as SC is playing right now.

          • Ucla should have kept running the ball no matter what. After SC scored 20 points the game was going SC’s way. If ucla runs the ball it keeps sc from teeing off. Ucla couldn’t gain any yardage though

          • I agree with that. Run the ball with Bolu Olorunfunmi and Jalen Starks. Sit the others. Move the pocket more and roll out the QB some. That would have made for a more competitive game and helped with time of possession, IMO.

However, I am a realist and had a pretty good idea of what was likely to happen last night. UCLA did not have a single game with an offense in sync. The game was a foregone conclusion. UCLA needs to develop an offensive line and philosophy before next season nets the same results.

          • With all due respect the game was over when it hit 20 points. That is when Mora and Polamalu should have run the ball to create the atmosphere of what they want for next year. And what a great opportunity to try, against a pretty good team. Mora and Polamalu could evaluate and see what they have to work on for next year.

          • I don’t think it was over at 20-14. They should have stuck with what was working in the 1st quarter running the ball. I also think they should already know what they have to work on, but it doesn’t seem like they do.

We will see what changes are made after the season. Mara has a huge buyout, so we will have him for awhile. I doubt that the NFL will be calling!

          • He needs a qb, online, receivers that can catch the ball. No NFL team will hire him, at least I wouldn’t. The key will be Polamalu, who is a great guy. Either ucla will accept what he wants or he will be done. I wish you the best. U have been above board and a good adversary. Come back anytime

  12. Workmanlike effort – clear separation between these two teams. Relevance is now the question for UCLA with the talent they’re graduating. BEAT THE IRISH!

      • Lincoln Kennedy is Zach Banner’s dad so a little prejudice don’t you think. This team has come a long way , but not a top ten team yet. Although they did beat Colorado and UW who are over rated with a weak conference this season which should put them 8th or 9th in the Playoff Poll. Beat ND handily and then will deserve a higher spot in the polls being a national TV game for the east to see.

        • Last week Lincoln Kennedy was impressed with SC but still wasn’t ready to say they’re the best team in the conference. He seemed convinced last night.

  13. Workmanlike, semi-boring, hard-hitting, penalty-filled easy win over a very inspired-for-one-quarter ucla club that was just outmanned.

Darnold makes many things look easy and turns near disasters into good gains. Such a great QB; unbelievable thrower and runner. Love his risky play and overwhelming confidence and cool.

    • I wasn’t bored. We imposed our will. They had their 2 TD’S and we let them know who’s boss. Game Over. We’re better. No argument whatsoever.

    • How can the f uuclans be outmanned when they are always ranked in the top 20 recruiting? It’s got to be poor coaching. Washington State and Colorado both do more with less. That game was compelling. Our game was a foregone conclusion. f uucla is simply no a test for us. They are Oregon State with worse uniforms.

      • Recruiting rankings are famous for not acknowledging holes in a class and ucla lacks talent at QB (no backup), OL, RB and WR. For instance, I’ve seen ucla receivers drop so many balls in games. IMHO, they shouldn’t have to be taught how to catch in college and I don’t hold coaches responsible for drops.

And if you want to bring up coaching, I would say why can’t our coaches teach our OLs not to jump offsides, or to hold?

In the end, we scrambled ucla’s brains because we have Darnold and they don’t. Remember what Hundley used to do to us? Same deal with McNown. USC went 0-7 against those two QBs, despite all the other talent on the field.

To expect ucla with FaFa at QB to come even close to beating USC with Darnold is just plain silly. ucla’s defensive talent is excellent, but their offensive talent is severely lacking. Remember Jamabo’s big HS rep? He’s a pedestrian runner in college and I don’t blame Pola for that. Some guys just don’t translate well to college, like super-ranked Max Browne at USC.

In Darnold we trust. I predict another blow out next year.

        • And blow outs year after year for the foreseeable future. The f uuclan program peaked 2 seasons ago and now is returning to its normal place as a punching bag for Top 20 teams. The f uuclans only recruit a decent quarterback every 20 years or so. Meanwhile Darnold is going to get better and better.

          • It’s hard to believe ucla’s sunk this low. It’s like the Curse of Cade combined with the Curse of Slick Rick to form the Curse of The Chimp.

The Trolls are just speechless and you can’t blame ’em. USC owns L.A., as it should be, as it will be. I love to see the bruins bowed down. What a great Sunday!

  14. The defense has been so impressive. Another great performance by the defense against UCLA. Clancy Pendergast has done an amazing job molding this defense into a beast.

The flip side, Darnold also did a great job putting up points against a really good UCLA defense. The time of possession was dominating and unbelieve that we had 40 more offensive plays than UCLA.

I’m looking for another equally impressive game against Notre Dame next week.

    • Shows how a team cannot score when they don’t have the ball. Then the defense kicks in and they go 3 and out. Total control of the game last night after the first ucla drive.

      • Yeah, the score wasn’t so lopsided, but the game in detail shows just how dominating of a performance it was for SC

  15. Snoozefest?????????????????????????
What game was SW at? LOL!!!!!!!!

Let the real journalist do the writing and reporting!!!!!

It’s 1:40am, but I love hearing that two ESPN guys have USC at #6 in the nation!

    FIGHT ON✌

    • Did anyone notice how screwed up the camera work was with all the blimp shots then quick back to side view? They didn’t seem to have the shots to clarify the reviews of the officials. And then, when the two talking heads calling the game went off into a personal conversation and forgot to even call the game really had me coming out of my chair.

  16. bel-air tech can’t recruit in depth – they can get 30 above average and some top stars but once an opponent burns through their starting 11 and 11 they’re in trouble. They’ll always be in trouble.

  17. ANY rivalry win is a great win…I did not see it,Im not a midnight-2am gamer ,my question is did ‘O’ line fail in red zone? I see more field goal attempts than TD’s….won’t win a bowl game that way, unless defense ultra dominant

    • I was trying to figure out if it was the line or the play calling down in the red zone. Seemed like ucla stuffed the box and USC was dazed and confused by it.

  18. I watched with some concern, not about winning the game, it was obvious ucla didn’t have the horsepower to go the whole game. What concerned me was the O line being again, dumb and uncontrolled. This just highlights their mistakes and shortcomings. Keeping Juju in the game hurt bothered me also. I know the stands were filled with nfl scouts but he was only at about 75%. The team was not very intense, seemed prep was taken lightly and beat ucla on sheer ability. The game showed the impact of emotion, ucla with a lot at the beginning, very little towards the end. USC had little intensity all evening, just enough to win.
It was a win, we needed it and got it. Hope the team is in better shape next week against ND. Would love to run it up on the princess and watch Kelly squirm.

    • I want SC to boat race the Domers so Kelly is gone, and maybe ND brings back natural grass to South Bend. I find fake grass at South Bend to be an affront to the football gods

      • If you have ever seen the ND campus they love to spend money on it. To bad it is in such a dismal location, the land of endless winter. Most all grass is either dead by now or covered with snow.

        • Went to an SC v ND game back in 2013. Beautiful campus and great experience. Perhaps I’m just a nostalgiaist, put I prefer dead grass over that fake shiny green stuff, especially at such a historic stadium.

    • We need Juju for 3 more games so it seemed dumb to keep him in when he was obviously dinged up.

  19. Well that was fun. I want to say USC is back, but there’s work to be done. I’m not counting on Utah next week, but I’d like to see them pound the cows. To paraphrase a comment someone made a day or two ago. It sucks that we beat the two “best” teams but didn’t make the playoffs.
Green jerseys this week? I wonder what the over and under is on that?
Next year blocking comes back and grade school false starts end when they bench the fat lug who gets caught.

  20. I love how SC is wearing down our opponents like PC’s teams. Yes, making mistakes, but so did PC teams. Unlike Kiffen and Sark, where we start out fast and then weaken and fold! Physically dominating in the fourth!

  21. I love how SC is wearing down our opponents like PC’s teams. Yes, making mistakes, but so did PC teams. Unlike Kiffen and Sark, where we start out fast and then weaken and fold! Physically dominating in the fourth!

  22. If you find it so boring, I suggest a new line of work, Scott.

Shoe salesman would be about right.

  23. Banner had his compulsory holding call to try and kill a drive. NINE minute drive followed up with another long drive. We beat them up in the 4th quarter. The Bruins defense will be sore this morning! Darnold is Mr. third Down. It could be 3rd and 3 3rd and 8 or 3rd and 17. He gets a fresh set of downs and lets the defense rest. He’s like Magic Johnson, he makes everyone around him better

  24. Having attended both the. Alabama and game last night obviously our team has come a long way. the obvious the D-line and Sam. But a special shout out to Nico Fallah who’s center play has been great all season (although he had one bad snap last night)

  25. As I see it last night was a win, win, win outcome.
    1. USC beat the gutty Li’l Bruins. Always a great outcome.
    2. There were mistakes made so the coaches can keep the kids practicing hard to focus on mistakes and not get complacent.
    3. Sports writers can act like Middle School Divas who have found out that they are not as attractive or well liked as they think. And write about the constant failures of the coaching staff like the little boy who cried Wolf.

Although it will not happen. How cool would it be to have the first and last game to be Alabama vs USC. The beat down left a mark and I expect the team wants to hurt Coaches Dumb & Dumber……………err………………Kiffin and Sarkisian. A little known fact, they share the same brain.

  26. Great win for USC, but note to Clay Helton, you better step up you’re recruiting game along the line of, scrimmage. SC showed vulnerability with protecting Sam Darnold, and defending the run, and as usual, Darnold’s feet came to the rescue.

    • A good QB he didn’t recruit dragged Mora to a 6th year at UCLA and talk of strong NFL interest. They’ll be replacing the bronze nude statutes in front of the coliseum with a bronze nude statue of Coach Hel on Senior day when Sam Darnold plays his last game in 2020.

  27. What a depressing posting. What was snoozy about the game? There were 2 lead changes, UCLA had explosive plays in the first quarter, hey that’s 25% of the game. USC had explosive and unbelievable plays throughout. USC won. It was the crosstown rivalry, it was in the Rose Bowl where USC doesn’t always win, even lost with one of their best teams ever (legendary QB Jim Davis Bootay), I mean I wasn’t that drunk, it was an exciting fun game.
