USC Morning Buzz: Where’s Are The Crowds This Season?

usc-ucla-crowd-2016There were only 71,000 at the Rose Bowl on Saturday for the USC-UCLA game. We all know UCLA is awful with a 4-7 record. So what is the USC fans’ excuse? The picture above shows an end zone where USC fans usually sit right before kickoff.

USC has an exciting quarterback. It has a breakaway tailback. It has a punt/kick returner capable of making big plays. It has an All-American wide receiver. So where was everyone at the Rose Bowl? And remember, Coliseum attendance figures this season (67,671) are currently at its lowest point since 2001. Can’t blame UCLA fans for that.

  1. Blame Larry Scott and TV for goofy start times. Blame the blogger for another whiny complaint.

    • Start Times, made for TV sport now.WW ( whining Wolfie) columns. All 150 that “read his articles” take away no reason to attend.
Here’s an honest question? When’s the last season USC or UCLA had good attendance?…

    • lol this guy has been complaining about the team non stop the whole season even in wins then ask where are the crowds? What a bozo hypocrite

  2. IMO crowds have been impacted by the dysfunction of the last few years. Additionally, the one and three start did not help. Fans will come back and the crowds will swell again; but it is going to take time.

  3. The NFL is back in town, the Ram’s , people are very excited to have the NFL back in LA !!! It’s taking Fan’s
    away from the college team’s

  4. I’m not fighting any type of crowd at 7:30 pm on a Saturday night, for what, and for who? I enjoyed the game in the comfort of my home, with a hot meal, and a few cocktails in front of me.

  5. F. All the above. Short notice on bad start times, ancient stadiums, NFL back in town, UCLA’s poor record, SC’s drama.

  6. I grew up listening the games on the radio. I went to home games when I could and teams appearance on T.V. was restricted by rule.
Now we have almost every team on T.V. and going to a home game is enough of a hassle to make it a chore.
So here’s the choice dedicate the whole day to one game or watch three games in the comfort of your own home.
I just cannot seem to remember whether they moving left to right or right to left on my Zenith radio dial.

  7. I personally don’t see this as a problem…Shorter Lines at the Concession Stands and Rest Rooms. Easier parking and Transit Connections. Less people hogging the Wifi Data. More Legroom and Elbow Room. Also, 52-6 will stick on the Program as long as 13-9 did.

  8. several reasons ncaa football attendance is down in so cal:

    * Obama’s 8 year depression economy means a real unemployment of about 18%, successful USC grads are working longer hours and ucla grads are getting extra jobs besides that barista gig, either way, people are working longer and harder to take the time off to make it to a game

    * Despite the failing economy, ticket prices are rising counter to the law of supply and demand. What’s it take to get a family of 4 to a game with a couple of beers, parking and a few hot dogs ?? $1000?

    * Going to a game is an “all day” affair, an hour drive both ways to get there & back, gotta get there at least 3 hours early to get parking and/or tailgate, longer game times a 3 hour game is nearly 4 hours now with added commercial breaks, who has time for that commitment what with jobs and all the kids activities younger married families have today.

    * The advent of the hi def TV. My screen is so clear I can see the blades of fake grass on the AstroTurf, heck from my former 25 yard seats I could barely read the uni numbers, let alone follow the ball well, fuuuumble ? who could tell ?

    * Unruly crowds and security. Especially applicable to pro games where you could get killed for wearing the wrong jersey, but football crowds are getting rougher, especially ucla drunk fans at the RB where they assault you on the way in and fight you on the way out when they lose.

    * USC specific: Backlash lesser attendance due to not wanting to support the incompetence of the AD and loser hires like Kif and Sark. Fans are leery and are in a missouri “show me” state first before flocking back.

    * To get even a decent season ticket at USC you also have to join Cardinal and Gold that’s also inflated from about $2000 a few years ago to about $5000 now.

    * Competition: In LA the former pro fans who flocked to USC as an alternate are now back to the Rams. Good riddance thoug there were a lot of former Raider band wagon fans who went over to USC and they were a bad element.

    * Terrible inconsistent game times. Thursday night games no way- no parking, late night, lease work at noon… Saturday 730 games ? horrible late night, other activities, I watched SC-ucla at a large cocktail party on the side.

    * For 2016 the election frankly took it out of a lot of people win or lose.

  9. Debbie downer blogger, breakaway tailback, All-American wide receiver, and an exciting kickoff/punt returner? I thought we were a one man gang.

  10. Badly lit golf course where a knifing took place the last time this game was played at night. Cars are parked in the dark and where is the exit roads? An alternative ‘bus’ ride up to Parsons lot and then trying to get out of that lot or ‘walk’ – just a couple of miles in blacked out (understandably) streets – all a result of a 7:30 pm start and a end time of 11:00 pm.

The rest of the comments are ‘spot on’ – better tv technology and the comfort of home.

  11. The Blogger is at an all time low in his writing, if that is even possible. What is to explain this? Is it his negative tenancies or just his utter lack of writing skill? Can’t blame the USC fans for this. So what is his excuse?

  12. I am sure the Rams have taken some fans and with those ticket prices who can afford both NFL and USC or UCLA

  13. Pot, meet kettle…. Scottie and the dooms-dayers basically quit on the season after week 4. Now you and the crew are complaining that attendance is down? Rich….

  14. 70,000 is a sellout most places and they are not night games . Time for schools to be in charge of those they pay,not the other way…grow a pair…

  15. AS A STADIUM THE ROSE BOWL SEATING SUCKS…WHY SHOULD USC FANS PAY BIG MONEY FOR LOUSY SEATS WHEN THEY CAN WATCH IT AT HOME AND NOT FIGHT THE PARKING AND OTHER ELEMENTS

  16. High quality big screen TVs are easily affordable… Why deal with the traffic and parking nightmares when you can just have a group of friends over? Cheaper food and no alcohol ban… With a good surround sound system it’s enough like being there. That’s why I stopped renewing my season tickets. Those weeknight games were truly the nail in the coffin…

  17. Gomer ball isn’t much of a sell … where were the SC fans at the Rose Bowl usually those end zones are full. But even the home games have been poorly attended. Suppose 3 losses hurts despite having a great qb like Darnold.
This Gomer thing just doesn’t seem right , kind of a Kiffin 2011 fraud year pulled off by Hackett … don’t know but Gomer isn’t selling.

  18. I thought about going to the game. But this blogger has convinced me that the team isn’t very good. They only beat bad teams and two months ago made decisions to make the season irrelevant.

I just want to watch good football. Apparently I need to move to Ann Arbor to see it live. So I’ll stay home and just watch it on tv.
