Broyles Award Finalists

USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast is a finalist for the Broyles Award, which goes to the nation’s top assistant coach. But more interesting to me, former USC defensive lineman Ryan Nielsen is also a finalist. Nielsen is the defensive line coach at North Carolina State.

  1. Man, I haven’t heard Ryan Nielsen’s name in a long time. He was good. And I have to admit that Clancy turned this defense around and they look like a real USC defense again. Keep up the good work.

    • I wonder how many points the D gives up on saturday.. Can we go on lock down mode and keep ND under 17? While cruising on offense. 42-16 USC!

      • Deshon Kizer’s thrown for 24 TD’S and 8 INT’S. Same as Darnold. If we pressure him consistently I think he struggles. We can hold them to 17.

        • Saturday could be all about the USC defense. No doubt the Trojans will score, but shutting down ND to zero would be excellent.

        • Kizer is the type of QB that has bothered SC for a few years now. This years defense is better–lets hope they are up to the task.

    • According to what Wolf told Petros and Money, Darnold also improved the defense. Clancy helped too.

      • Maybe Petros, being a football analyst, looked at the time of possession when Max Browne was quarterback and then compared it to when Sam Darnold was quarterback and noticed that the USC defense played much better when it wasn’t on the field for 35 minutes a game…

        • True, but some of these drives with Darnold result in quick scores so it’s not all on Darnold. The defense is playing better on its own.

  2. Hard tombelieve Kiffin not a nominee or the defensive coordinator from univ of Washington.

  3. It is interesting what SW finds interesting; let alone more interesting. What makes Ryan Nielsen more interesting than Justin Wilcox? From my perspective I find it interesting that Wilcox was run out of town at the point of a pitchfork & is now being nominated for one of the top coaching awards. Quite a turn around I would say.

    • Wolf feels stupid because 2 guys he has consistently trashed are also up for the award. That’s why he is “more” interested in RN.

      • Someone offered the theory that Wilcox has been successful when he has been in a stable situation. Boise State with Peterson was the epitome of stability and believe it or not the situation with Sark at UW was pretty stable. And God knows his time at SC was anything but stable. I also think he just wasn’t a good fit in LA. He is from the Pacific Northwest & WI is much more like Oregon than LA.
