USC Morning Buzz: Ed Orgeron To Be Named LSU Coach

orgeron-lsuMultiple reports say LSU will hire Ed Orgeron. I have no idea if he will succeed or not. He is supposedly going to try to hire Lane Kiffin as his offensive coordinator. But I do know what he would say to Pat Haden right now if he had a chance. And it cannot be printed.

  1. Get over it SW.

Ed O only got the LSU job because Fisher and Herman said no thanks and O agreed to work for 1/2 their salaries.

Good for Ed. Hope he does a great job with the Kiffer or Sark as his OC, two coaches SC would never want anything to do with again.

    Beat the Irish big today!

    • Jack, IMO. , Coach O should stay away for Sark or Kiffin. Not because they aren’t good OC’s ; but rather because of the drama & baggage they bring. Coach O is not Saban and doesn’t have the chops to control the trouble those 2 guys could bring. The risk-reward ratio is too lopsided.

      • I think you’re right but these moves are always about the connections and the Kiffer might be chafing to get away from Saban’s butt-chewings in public.

Actually, the move would be good for Sark too who would probably be helped by coaching for a man who successfully gave up drinking long ago.

I’m very happy for O but view this strictly as a B hire by LSU. They could have done worse, could have done better. It’s a dream for O though so I’ll be pulling for him to make it work in Death Valley.

If CH continues to improve at SC, ironically it will have worked our best for all parties. I wouldn’t trade CH for O and really like where we are. I think a key will turn out to be CH’s recruiting ability. Can he improve us in the trenches and bring in talent like JuJu and Adoree? One thing we know about O – he’s a great recruiter.

        • Kiffin should only leave Saban for a HC job. He will not look nearly as attractive somewhere else than he does with Saban. Agree about O being a great recruiter. Will be shocked if any top prospect from Louisiana doesn’t sign with LSU. O needs to get a legit OC and a QB

          • Very interesting decision coming up for the Kiffer. Maybe he can lock in a Saban-successor gig at ALA. I have no idea how this may go of how the Kiffer views his moves.

Would be great opportunity for Sark especially to suddenly land a cherry OC job and really get on his feet again with a big salary. Since he’s not paying his ex child or spousal support, the money’s all his. Good move by his attorney, no matter how much Sark gave up to get set free.

          • I know all these coaches are competitors & have egos the size of all outdoors. But following a legend is rarely a good move. Saban is one of a kind and his success will not be matched. But the fan base will not be realistic in their expectations. It is better to be the guy who follows the guy who was the guy who followed the legend.

          • Very true. But literally turning down an ALA or USC or TEXAS or OHIO ST is easier said than done even when the legend factor comes into play.

You often only get one crack at a job like that, and if you fail, you’re still set for life money-wise, like Charlie Strong. After the Kiffer’s recent divorce, he might be thinking it’s a great time to cash in, depending on his settlement with his ex.

Nobody will work at ALA because nobody will be able to match the Saban years. Weird how all this ALA success can only breed failure for the immed post-Saban years.

          • The Saban & Meyers make it tough on everyone else. Those 2 are special coaches & they don’t come around often. Harbaugh, Jimbo, & Dabo are really good, but they are not in the class of the top 2 guys. And all the other good coaches, McElwain, D’Antonio, or Malzahn are not guarantees . But those guys are at big time schools and their fan bases expect Saban & Meyer like results. Fans always set themselves up for disappointment–I sure am guilty sometimes

          • I doubt if Ed Orgeron will ever deal with that back stabbing, Drunk. Because he’s one of the few people who actually knows who Sarkisian, really is.

          • Lane Kiffen is successful because of Nick Sabah, and the talent at Alabama. How many times have we seen, or heard about Saban, having to keep Kiffen in check for being all over the place with his play calling ? I don’t know if Ed Orgeron should hire an OC , that probably won’t respect him as a head coach

          • Fred, Saban is a task master. He rips everyone and anyone that isn’t living up to his standard. Sabin is unequivocal in his support and appreciation for Kiffin. He may not be HC material, , but he is a good OC and is respected in that role

    • Seeing as he is well acquainted with both Sark and Kiffen, if one leaves the other will stay at AL. Either one will get LSU a quality QB which they are in need of. LSU will be tough to recruit against for sure.

  2. So what your saying is lsu hired their 3rd choice as HC and this is to be celebrated by lsu fans? Love CEO, but I don’t believe he will be there in 4 years and lsu will once again be hunting for a coach. Maybe he hires Kiff as OC and they struggle and Kiff replaces CEO in 2-3 years and gets his next HC shot at Lsu. Whatever the outcome I have a feeling some fans will be clamorous for Les Miles in a few years.

  3. CONGRATULATIONS ED O!

Made it out after all. Parking lot is full. Should be a sellout or very close.

    • Herman wanted $6.5 million and annual increases plus incentives after year 3.. LSU said NO THANK YOU!

      • Herman also told LSU that he was leaning to TEXAS, his dream job. That’s why LSU took Ed O, not because of the money.

          • At TEXAS now, all you have to do is beat OU. At LSU, you have to beat ALA and AUB, et al. Big 12 is much easier road than SEC.

LSU has plenty of $ and Fisher turned down nearly 7 mil. Ed O was clearly choice #3, regardless of any money demands. Herman’s TEXAS K will prove that.

          • We will soon find out if Tom Herman was just the flavor of the month, because he’s going to have to win immediately. Mack Brown admittedly left Texas with no talent, but Charlie Strong left Herman with better players then he had at Houston.

          • Yep.. If he fails to produce .. Then leaership will be questioned.. Yet , they interfere way to much up at Texas to allow the coaches to do their job.

          • Yep, because winning at Houston is a lot easier than doing it at Texas . Texas A&M”s , Kevin Sumlin can tell you all about that ,

          • Mack Brown was nothing special and he won big TEXAS.

I’ve always thought Sumlin was a little greasy, not sure why but it’s probably because he drove such a strange bargain when SC looked at him. He lived off Manziel for awhile, pure and simple.

Wonder where Strong will end up. Everyone says he’ll do fine, but I’m not sure where.

          • Hopefully he’ll sit out a year, then go get one of those Arizona openings after both coaches get fired

          • Face it. Charlie Strong stunk at TEXAS. Just leaving the Horns with better talent isn’t saying much as they grow prep footballers in the Longhorn State like weeds in West Texas.

          • They are both proven winners, but like I said , Tom Herman dealing with a different animal then he had at Houston. Kevin Sumlin realized that after he got to Texas A&M .

  4. Just like some are 99th and 100th choices in getting real sports journalist jobs.. Coach O was always in the mix.. Reporting facts not fiction will get a beat reporter a better gig! ✌

    • Not nowadays with the One Big Party Media. They love their fake news and their fake polls that all predicted a Hillary victory.

  5. Good luck to him and here;s hoping whatever he didn’t learn at both MS and USC he has learned prior to landing in Baton Rogue.

  6. So you “have no idea if he will succeed or not”, but if he does well you’ll criticize SC for not keeping him , right?

      • I disagree 100%, Disqus 30. Give me SOME GOOD REASONS that discount the positives. and don’t hand me that UCLA loss crap when Coach O, his Staff and team were told Sark is on the way before the D^MN GAME !!! Coach O is now a PROVEN HEAD COACH not born and raised in San Clemente, but a Cajan whose credentials with the Trojans are extraordinary.

  7. No idea? Room to hedge, Scottie? Take a stand…. I figure that’s what you’re paid for. I suggest they’ll get an emotional push, but they won’t get much done in the long run so long as the other giants in the profession are sucking up all the recruits….

    • LSU always recruits well and Coach O is one of the top recruiters in the country. The question is can he get a consistent Offense installed & can he develop a complete program.

  8. Orgeron would have been a good choice at USC at the time . He fits great with LSU though and great for his family

  9. Leadership, and a well respected defensive coordinator already in place . Ed Orgeron is a great recruiter, and LSU has deep football tradition, so we can finally see what Orgeron can do on a level playing field, because Ole Miss was in shambles when he took over. And Lane Kiffen isn’t the only good offensive coordinator out there, so if Orgeron can’t land him, just move to the next one .

  10. And exactly why should Kiffin leave the #1 college football program for the same position with a new coach who has a 50:50 chance of being successful?

    • Well maybe to prove he can do it at LSU as well as @ AL – the latter was great before Kiffin got there as to the former been a while – just sayin’

    • Maybe he hates Saban who has a rep for leaving his assts in tatters. The Kiffer now has other options he didn’t have when Saban saved him.

  11. Good riddance !

Orgeron is a great recruiter and a good Defensive Line coach, BUT THAT’S IT !

He is “not” a Head Coach and “O” doesn’t hold a candle to Clay Helton !

Thank God Orgeron is there (Where ever?) and Clay and Clancy are here !!!

Now let’s whoop Notre Dame and watch the rest play itself out today, either way the USC Trojans are “Flyin High Again” (Come up and join Them)

    FightOn

  12. Good for Ed O. A good guy getting a shot with a decent program.

If he has anything negative to say to Pat Haden, then Haden would rightfully deserve it.

Ed may not have been the best choice USC could have made. But, no one expected Haden and Mark Jackson to aim low and pick Sark. The choice of Sark was a step down from Ed O and everyone, Coach O included, knew it. Too bad Haden and his HH cronies didn’t.

  13. Let’s hope USC and LSU sign up for a home and home! Good luck to Orgeron. Haden treated him terribly and it is good he’s getting the chance he deserves.

I hope the reports of him going after Kiffin though are overblown. He’d do better steering clear of a guy who consustently fails upward. I’m hoping he gets the Alabama job when Savan retires. I’d love to see that program get crippled.

  14. LOL I GUESS THE BLOGGER-SW has nothing negative to write about..HAWR HAWR.. 24-7 .. CARRY ON!

    Fight On!!

  15. Hopefully Ed gets Lane and Lane’s dad so they can recapture the magic they shared at USC taking them to glory in 2012.
