Coach Of The Year Finalist

Western Michigan’s P.J. Fleck, Penn State’s James Franklin, Colorado’s Mike MacIntyre, Washington’s Chris Petersen and Alabama’s Nick Saban were named finalists for the Eddie Robinson Award, which goes to the nation’s top coach.

Colin Cowherd obviously has no vote since USC is not included.

    • or Peterson. they’ve moved mountains in 2 years. this proves a coach can make all the difference in the world.

      • CP is top tier coach but UW was not nearly as depleted & low as CU was when MM took over. If you are talking PAC12 coy I would vote for MM. Nationally I would vote for Franklin–his team won a division and a conference title

        • But Frankiln lost by a whopping 40 to MICH and also got beat by rival PITT. How does that beat undefeated and wipe-out king Saban, when we all know it’s harder to stay on top than it is to get there?

          • No disagreement from me. Saban is coach of the decade. Fair or not, coy tends to go to coach who oversees a big turn around or has a team come out of nowhere. Saban success is so dominant, that trying to argue against him as coy every year is a fools errand.

          • High time to give Coach Of The Year to someone who has beat all odds to WIN BIG. Like turning a 1-8 program into a PAC12 South champ. Saban has enough glory to last a lifetime.

          • USC has enough Rose Bowl wins to last 100 years but that doesn’t stop the Trojans from going again and again while you bruins are barred from the game. Too bad CU couldn’t beat USC. At least they held you little gutties to 10 points. That’s probably why they got the Alamo Bowl.

          • LOL! You really are about as lucid as an old homeless lady at a bus stop. WISE UP MILDRED: I am a TROJAN FAN since 1966.
            Now, stuff it!

          • You should be happy the little gutties stink then. Try not to be so confused in the future wimp.

          • Didn’t Saban win it last year, the year before, and the year before that ? He recruits Number One year after year after year. if he loses even one game with the remarkable talent he has, shame on him. And Jack B, i recon Franklin winning the BIG-10 Conference Championship with a team coming out of no where, defeating Ohio State who defeated Michigan, dries up your blog. To me, it is a Big Deal that overshadows Bama’s cruse.

          • They’re all good candidates or they wouldn’t be nominated.

It’s fair and natural after such prolonged success to hold Saban’s success against him. People expect him to go undefeated and to score 50 points on the best teams in the country. And his defense is even better.

But I agree, you do need to spread the wealth. Otherwise, it’s just too boring.

    • After we beat Penn State Helton will have beaten 3 of the 5. Also says something about USC schedule that we play 4 of the top 5 coaches on the list.

      • Will Penn State’s coach pull a Joe Pa’ like Paterno did in 2009? He was so mad after the whooping the ninny (spelling suggestion accepted) lions took in Pasadena he refused to give an interview.

        • Well somebodies got to take the field and since it won’t be the crappy little gutties, USC will have to step in as usual wimp boy. You gonna watch USC in the Rose Bowl this year punk? Thought so.

    • Now that was funny.

Anyway, Helton is no coach of the year. Did he and his staff do a commendable job and really turn this thing around? Absolutely. Did Darnold help? Sure. But it all came together, collectively. And with just enough time to salvage the season. Good for them, and good for us Trojans and Trojan fans. Let’s own the Rose Bowl again.

      • What’s funny is that you crappy little gutties try to hang here with us Trojans. We own you flunkies.

How’s your bowl season gojing? Hah, hah, hah.

  1. If CH had started Darnold from the beginning, he’d be on this list, but I don’t think he’s the type who cares about individual honors anyway.

And the two most successful coaches in the Pac this year are Petersen and Helton and both will get to show their powers in the Big Boy Bowls in Jan.

This “Row The Boat” guy, Fleck, is a little too much for me. I’m not sure he’ll translate that well to the big time but we will see.

From this list I’d choose Saban. He’s the king. Were he a bounty hunter, I don’t Butch or Sundance would have had a chance of ever getting to Bolivia.

    • I think Helton deserves it more because he showed his mettle by overcoming intense criticism and
going into the dawghouse and putting the switch to Peterson in his freshman year as a headcoach.

    • If Fleck stays at Western Michigan, we play him next year. Not many job openings left so he may be around.

    • Agree. Coach Fleck exhausted me after only one minute of watching his schtick. I believe in spirit, but I like Coach Helton’s low-key approach.

    • Fleck is not in mix for Oregon–somewhat surprising. I live in PDX and talk up here is that he may be a bit full of himself and may be over playing his hand. Now that I have said all that watch him get the job or even a better one. Lol

    • Saban is years old toast in this category. Aren’t they looking for a HC who beat the odds? Who worked with (compared to Saban) basic talent? Who turned a lemon into lemonade??

      • Saban’s a finalist idiot. If they were looking for a coach who beat the odds, The Chimp would win for most consecutive seasons without a decent bowl game.

  2. PA St’s Franklin should be the winner – coming out of that nightmare condoned by their canonized saint ‘Jo Pa’ he (Franklin) has done a phenomenal job that I’d say many thought wasn’t going to be at that level for many years to come.

  3. He notified the committee to not list him for this years award. He’s a very humble man.

  4. Just realized that Pete Carroll never won this award. In the years of Pete’s best teams, Nick Saban won in 2003 & 2008, Urban Meyer in 2004, and my personal favorite Charlie Weis in 2005.

    • That was when ESPN was in love the Texas Longhorns, Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, Michigan Wolverines, Florida St Seminoles and Boise St Broncos. Nothing but kissing until untill everyone of them had to make a coaching move or they were forced out. Kirk Herbstreit was always who was the first one to say Pete Carroll was the best coach in college football.

  5. Mike McIntyer gets my vote hands down, because Colorado hasn’t been relevant in decades.

    • Old spice was my favorite fragrance as a 15 year old. I have no clue as to what moth balls smell like.
How did you accomplish it? Held ‘um by the wings?

  6. If helton had made the right decision on Darnold earlier he might be coach of the year

  7. What occurs to me is CCH has already beat two of these and has a chance to knock off the third on 1/2/17. Wolf’s worse nightmare is unfolding. He has pushed three of these coaches as better suited for USC and CCH has laid waste to two already.
