USC Morning Buzz: Defensive Tackle Remains Under Spotlight

USC has 13 commitments with its recent downsizing of its class. There is still a lot of time left in recruiting but the Trojans do not have a defensive tackle in their current class. This is significant because it’s been a position of concern. USC’s best tackle this season,  Stevie Tu’ikolovatu, is a senior. Defenstive tackle Kenny Bigelow should return but has a history of injury issues. Noah Jefferson, who many had high hopes for, is gone.

If you look at the list of Rivals’ top 50 defensive tackles, there are still plenty who are uncommitted, including the No. 1 defensive tackle, Marvin Wilson. It’s just surprising USC hasn’t grabbed one already.

  1. It’s surprising that you can’t focus on your spelling. Let the coaches do the recruiting.

    “Defenstive tackle”

  2. Right now USC looks in bad shape for DT. These recruiters need to get going on it. Rose Bowl, then recruit, recruit. Not even a DT who is genuinely “warm” and the crystal ball shows zip.

    • LOL, the same crystal ball morons who had the Fresno kid all locked up for USC….. but he went to Utah instead

    • Staff is all over it .look at who they have had in home’s with. And who has and are taking offical visits here. They are doing the work…Closing come signing day remains the question…last year they closed great.

  3. Again, I refer you, Scottie, to Gerard Martinez – he can break down the recruiting game for you. More research? Check back to Pete’s classes – he had about 12-13 players before January and then closed hard. Would rather have a silent commit sign on the dotted line than a verbal commit who leaves.

  4. Clay Helton’s future could be riding on this particular class, because he needs to prepare for after, Sam Darnold. So he better step up his recruiting along the line of scrimmage

    • Sears, maybe Corral after Darnold…Options changed greatly after Washington game…..The list of DL and OL they are after and have been after is large. Its no accident 3 guys dropped making more room. The best recruits are considering and taking officials here. Staff is doing all the right things at this point. Now closing that’s what we have to wait and see….There are at least 2 Major silents.

      • You won’t give out the names of the silent’s, but what position do they play, or even what side of the ball ? They aren’t both WR’s are they? HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

      • We are set up in a good spot at QB in the future. Fink, then Sears and then Corral. That’s a Carroll type of stable.
And Peter, we really need to land one of these DT’s.

        • Happy holidays to you and yours my friend.
Staff knows it.We know it.The DTs in mix Are good. They know they could play next year.We need 2-3 this cycle. We had the drop dt last week by plan.Isn’t there a JC DT in play also.?

          • Thanks bud you too. There’s a DL visiting from JUCO soon but hes a DE and i think he’s leaning to SEC schools but you never know. A lot of time left but we are gonna either hit big or miss greatly. I would say Terrance Lang will be a sure signature on signing day.

          • Here we go with this bullcrap. Sam Bam your out your mind. We set up good at Qb. LMAO. Fink,Corral,Sears are all a waist of time. Do you see Alabama,Ohio State, Clemson, Forida State going after these guys. Heck Nah. They know better they want athletes who can win big games not monitor and dependon others like the old days. Your not winning nothing with stiff statues and playing Politics with that position. Its sickening. Those days are over.

          • Yeah sure. Hey let’s just tell these three Army All American QBs that we dont want them. Are you serious?????????????????????

          • Sam, your getting better at this. Your football IQ is getting up there. Anyone can say anything. Doesn’t mean anything. Just like this troll you replied to. Now when someone says something like ,”Three Army All-Americans”. That’s a fact.

          • All i can say is how do you (not you Pete) not except three kids who are a 5*, 4*, 4* who are playing or played in the premier all star games.

          • Sears just lead a come from behind when on the road in Huntington Beach against Edison to go to the State final. Hello

      • You could sign a top 5 class without 4&5 star lineman, I’m saying Helton needs to focus on controlling the line of scrimmage

  5. SC suddenly loses three 3-star recruits after getting to the Rose Bowl as a full TD fave and being discussed nationwide in the media every day as the team nobody (except ‘Bama) wants to play.

    Read the tealeaves folks.

LOI will be a great day as usual for USC, though we’ll always have the wimpy bedwetters around to fret as usual. Makes me laugh.

  6. All of USC’S DT targets are out of state kids. You could say that they’ve been slow in recruiting this area this cycle but also that California is weak with DT’s. Alec Jackson, Jay Tufele, Terrance Lang who i think they want to be a DT 6-5 275 are all top targets. Marvin Wilson is a long shot but who knows.

Also, Adoree Jackson became a UNANIMOUS ALL AMERICAN today after being named American Football Coaches Association AA. He’s the 28th Unanimous AA in school history.

  7. “…there are still plenty who are uncommitted.”= No one else has grabbed them either, or are silent commits who are waiting for All-American games to announce.

  8. When you single-mindedly focus on receivers and “athletes”, then you tend to be late to the party for DTs.

  9. It’s hard to get these D-linemen because California does not produce enough of them so SC has to recruit out of state and mostly back east. Look at that Rivals list of the top 50 D-tackles and there is only one from California and he’s from Bakersfield.

    • Don’t we still run camps where we get a good look at the local bigs we want to recruit? There really is a shortage out West

      • Sure we run camps but it’s still harder to get kids from out of state, especially from east of the Mississippi. These are 17 and 18 year olds. They want to stay close to their family.

  10. SC is in the hunt for a top JUCO DEFENSIVE LINEMAN BAMA wants… 3 yrs to play too…Javon Kinlaw ,quality like Fatu …ready to go…SC in his final 3

  11. Even though it is early, this news is all too familiar in hiring an offensive minded HC. He usually looks at defensive needed recruits only when his offensive priority list has been filled. People like Helton have a mental block in thinking defense actually wins championships. But it is still early yet for Helton to “wise up”. You look at his list of offensive side coaches and the defensive side and it doesn’t take much to realize where he leans.
