  2. Most overlooked iconic USC play of all-time —

    In the 1987 USC/ucla game, Rodney Peete runs the length of the field (89 yds) to nail bruin speedster DB Eric Turner before he scores on a 100-yd pick return TD, which would have given ucla a 17-0 lead. Instead, Peete throws his 33 yd juggle-TD to Affholter with 8 min to go and the Trojans win 17-13 and go to the Rose Bowl.

        • I was at the Diggs catch Rose Bowl. Took so long to get out of the parking lot we had to blow off an after party. Was such a great game. Maybe the best one I ever saw, although I also loved the 38-28 mud bath at the Coli in 1970 when we beat Theisman and ND. Boy, was he ever good that day. John Vella for us was a wild man.

        • Yep, me too, Pasadena. And each of those moments (especially the Diggs catch) is cemented in my memory. It is great to be an SC fan (except 1991 to 1998).

          • Unfortunately, we have to take the good with the bad. If you do, then you can say that you are a true fan. We all know the ruin fan only takes the good and when they have a lousy team they jump off and break their ankles because they sre fair weather fans.

    • I recall that play – if I remember correctly, Peete may have grabbed a facemask on the tackle, which would have extended the half and given UCLA a chance to score, but it wasn’t called. This happened right after the TV announcer mentioned that the fastest person on the field is the QB after an interception. Wondering if anyone else remembers that…

      • USC had three TDs called back on penalties that day. Doesn’t seem like the refs missed much but we did get lucky on the Peete face mask.

  3. Hope the weather is a crisp sunny day for the Rose Bowl. The rain at the Holiday Bowl looks like a buzz kill. Correction…the Poinsettia Bowl.

  4. i’ll never forget curt gowdy’s call of diggs’ catch. the hatred of ohio state and woody hayes was right there with notre dame and ucla.

    • Gowdy ” USC will go for two , if they blow it they could lose … Haden , under the gun , CAUGHT !
