USC Tweet Of The Day

  1. The NCAA has literally turned the bowl season into a greedy money grab for themselves by creating pointless, games. No scholarship is worth risking injury to a projected number one draft choice, in one of those useless, comical games .

    • What is the difference between the NCAA’s money grab and the player’s money grab – other than who is doing the grabbing? I agree with your observation about the bowl season – for that matter for the NCAA – but to some people, meeting your end of the deal even when all of a sudden it isn’t in your immediate interest and may involve the same risk as existed when you accepted the school’s scholarship money and uniform is more than just a quaint outdated idea.

    • Weak excuse! McCaffrey has a $5 million insurance policy protecting him from any injury related to football.

  2. Maybe Su’a should ask the 90% of college football players who don’t make it to the NFL if the bowl game is irrelevant – especially the seniors.

      • We have , I believe new offer to Tre Brown ,Ok commit.corner.He just set official. Thoughts about that ? We just making sure we are covered?

        • I’m hoping it has nothing to do with Darnay Holmes, but it probably does and might mean Holmes gave the staff word that he wont be a trojan. He runs a 4.3 and has some really good offers.

    • Why don’t you and Sam ask them? Sua has a much better pulse on what college players feel than you do.

And you will be shocked by the answers. In fact, I don’t believe you will be able to handle the truth.

      • George,
Yesterday Jaylon Smith who tore his ACL and MCL in the Fiesta Bowl said if he could do it all over again he wouldn’t change a thing. He lost meeeeelions and answered “i wouldn’t change a thing”.
Yesterday David Carr said he would want to play next to his brothers.
Yesterday Ezekiel Elliot said he would rather play in the bowl game with his brothers..

They were asked George. That’s what they said. Those are warriors.

        • Sua disagrees. And he isn’t a warrior? He got concussed so bad he has to wear glasses permanently.

So three players out of the what, 600 in the NFL, voiced opinions to confirm your biases. Congrats, you have a definitive sample size, so your biases are now facts. Maybe you can work for the Clinton campaign. They are looking for date experts who think like you.

And this “they are warriors” stuff is so transparent and boring. Of course the fat, lazy and pasty keyboard “warriors” on the internet are going to rip on McCaffery and Fournette as quitters, because y’all think that if you were in the same position, y’all would do the same. Because y’all like fantasize that you are a warrior who would lay it down for your fellow teammate.

But y’all wouldn’t because y’all are small, fat, pasty and weak, and y’all have no clue and what these players go through on a day-to-day, year-to-year basis.

          • I deleted my reply. Lets just say a person who walks away from our final game wouldn’t sit right the way i was brought up.

          • Also, those are three very high profiles NFL players. What more do you want? So I’m a keyboard warrior? Because I’ve never stepped on a college football field?

GEORGE…..i wouldn’t want you in the huddle or on the diamond with me. You might quit because theres no Gatorade.

          • Perhaps ya’ll need sit down and relax. You think it is okay to quit on your mates, fine for you. Others don’t agree with ya’ll so be cool with it.

          • Independence, Football is a tough sport and injuries happen !

If that is a too great of fear, then choose another sport, something you consider safer like Baseball and or Basketball !

You play to Win, not to fear injury ? !

            It’s Football…

        • We have to assume he said that out of pride. Why else would someone say they would not change tearing ligament and potentially losing money?

The only other alternative is that this person is not smart for making that comment. So let’s just say you’re appealing to pride.

          • My point has been proven.

Tearing ligament and potentially losing income pales in comparison to standing next to brothers.

        • Late to the party.
Good answer but still not conclusive, Sammy. Three players don’t represent all college players. Anecdotal answers/stories never do. You might be right and most college players might want to stay and play. However, until a thorough conclusive study is done, there is no proof what most players would do.

    • Don’t be silly. The majority of these bowls games irrelevant to college football at large.

      • A lot of these schools prepare like it means something. They take pride in representing their University. A win or loss may be the deciding factor in another Christian McCaffrey type signing a letter of intent to Stanford.

    • I agree with Helen. Su’a has a right to his opinion but it comes off as arrogance. Not all of them think the game is irrelevant. If he would have said something like that before a bowl game, as coach I would have not played him or even suited him up. That bowl game could be the last game of a player’s football career, and it is for the majority of them, and its a chance for them to go out on a winning note. Heck, if he is sooooo good and is concerned about his future, why even play his junior and senior years?

  3. Stanford continued to play for Christian McCaffrey when he got injured but it looks like doesn’t remember that. Or that doesn’t mean much to him.

  4. “irrelevant game”? Really? I am certain that Penn State looks at this Rose Bowl game with USC in a totally different light than does Cravens and won’t be “sitting it out”.

    • Depends on the game and where the two teams are at emotionally. When SC went to the Holiday Bowl 2 years ago they were fired up and on the rise. Last year, same game and they did not want to play that game. I think both Penn St and SC will be pumped for this game.

    • Radio host Dave Graca called the Rose Bowl game “meaningless” on national radio yesterday and supported McCaffrey. The wave of selfishness is rising and may wipe out the sport we all love.

      • All college games are meaningless because collectively every player in the College Football Playoff will make less money than the worst player in the NFL when he sits on the bench during the first game of the preseason.

  5. How about the fraud element of scholarship players opting to skip a game? Does anybody see it as disingenuous to say; ” thanks for the free education but I think I’ll look out for number one for this game is agreed to play in return for said education. “

    • What about the “fraud element” where a player has a very good chance of getting an injury that will effect him (or her) for the rest of his life, yet the school washes it’s hands of any and all future medical and health care.

All so the school can steer him into those worthless communication and comparative studies degrees because the valuable onea (the professional and STEM degrees) take too much time away from football.

The naivete of fans is stunning.

      • Duh gee George tell me about the rabbits . Every game is an injury risk . It is not naive to believe these students owe the school for their education. And it is outright stupid to believe the school forces them into being communication majors. It the students own short sighted belief that they are somehow become a mega star after college. The sad fact is most of them don’t even get into the draft.
But not all schools force their football players to take underwater basket weaving. My dentist played football at Cal.

    • Exactly. Funny how they don’t skip a game during their entire college career, but are willing to skip the last game because there are no ramifications (i.e., penalties) for doing so. The risk of injury doesn’t go up for the bowl game but remains the same as for every game they played while receiving free educational benefits.

  6. I respect everyone’s opinion & will not disparage anyone for having an opinion different then mine. I There is not universal agreement , let alone consensus as to what the “right” decision is. My opinion is that a player that opts to not play in a bowl game is not a coward or abandoning his teammates and is not being selfish. He is making a decision that is best for him and no one else. Would I be disappointed if a player from SC opted out? Absolutely. I would wish him well and thank him for his contribution while a Trojan.

      • He more than fulfilled his end of the bargain. I guarantee a lot of Stanfords success, which also translates to increased revenue, is directly related to McCaffrey. We are not going to agree on this and that is ok. Kind of nice to have a legitimate point of contention to debate.

  7. Why drive a car on the highway and risk being in an accident? Why choose a career playing in the NFL and risk ruining the rest of your life?

      • You never heard of Junior Seau? Jack Ham? Lyle Alzado? They all paid a heavy price for their sports glory. But then again firemen get COPD from smoke inhalation. Life is full of risks.

        • I don’t know if I agree that those guys had/have a horrible life.
Ham is still alive and doing well, and Alzado’s cause of death is not related to his steroid use. …that leaves Seau, an outlier.

      • That’s what I say. As long as the ar’nt doing anything wrong it should be left to the player.

      • Thanks to the national playoff all the sports writers and ESPN clamoured for, there are only two “relevant” bowls on New Years Eve. Radio hosts are callling the Rose Bowl irrelevant. Having the national playoff is creating a monster.

  8. wow…it is all about self , self, and self…this is why I thinK only seniors should be eligible for awards…loyalty should mean something AS THE starting point…this I love my team and leave early is sheer BS…

    • The terms loyalty and commitment don’t mean as much as they used to I guess. I would love to see the awards going to the junior and senior players. I would love to see scholarships paid back if players don’t play for 4 years. Screw the NFL.

  9. Some games are irrelevant and some are not. It depends on the game. You should have some loyalty to your team and your teammates and your coaches. These coaches poured everything they know into you for 3-4 years to prepare you for the next level and then when they need you the most, you just say “sorry but I’m going to have to skip this game because I have MY career to protect. Give me a break. It’s not all about you. Can you image if Sam Darnold was a junior and said he was going to skip the Rose Bowl to protect his career.

  10. Projected #1 Overall pick in the NFL Draft Myles Garrett is going to play in the Advocare V100 Texas Bowl.
    Texas A&M is 8-4.
    Respect!

  11. Ezekiel Elliot actually had a chance to suit up 12 more times if he decided to come back and play with his brothers. Hypocrisy? Possibly. Talk is cheap.

      • Hey Sam. I realize that. He said he would give anything to suit up with his brothers again. He had a chance to suit up 12 more times if he came back.

  12. Disagree with Mr Cravens, you fight with your brother’s to the bitter end !!!!!! Sure hope this won’t start a New trend in the future sitting out bowl game’s

    • I am afraid it is. And it won’t stop at bowl games. Imagine if the seniors and juniors all decided to sit out the season after we lost to Utah to save themselves for the draft?

  13. The more things that Su’a comments on the more respect I lose for him !

Su’a Cravens is definitely one person that I would never go into battle with, not on my side/Team, that’s for sure !!!

Modern Athletes look out only for themselves, 20, 30 years ago, it was completely different, definitely not as today !

And “Faith” in anything but themselves doesn’t exist anymore !

Money $$$ talks and everything else walks…

  14. That’s a backslap across the face of every one of his usc football teammates, coaches, and fans.

  15. College players don’t get paid directly but are cash cows for the university. If a player like McCaffrey has an NFL future, he should be left alone when he decides to not play in the league. No one looks out for these players so they need to look out for themselves.

  16. Wow, how wrong and selfish can you be. Disappointed in Cravens. The Rose Bowl is now irrelevant for example ? My how times have changed. What’s next ? Players sitting out irrelevant games against Oregon State or whenever they feel like it ?

  17. It is all about money for the school so let the players leave – they owe the school nothing. Nada. Zilch.
