A Three-Star Commitment

Terrrance Lang, a three-star defensive end from Maranatha High School in Pasadena, has committed to USC. He is the second three-star to commit since USC purged a trio of three-star recruits who had committed before the season. At least the 6-6 Lang can play on the line though going from Division 9 Maranatha to USC should be a big transition. I had previously mentioned Lang and Clay Helton attended a Pasadena Quarterbacks Club lunch together but were barred from speaking because of NCAA rules.

  1. He is a project. He’s a basketball player playing football. Has the potential to to be a DT. Again, Kenechi Udeze has some pressure to land some Big Dogs in my opinion. No need to panic. This commitment was a very long time coming. Let this play out to signing day before we get worried about DT’s.

    • Lang has lots of potential.. Many of these small school kids are diamonds. 6’6 and growing. Coach him up, he may be a special kid with a bright future #blindside

      • I agree. And i really feel BKU can get the best out of kids because of his experiences as an under the radar player, beating cancer, NFL and College success. But i also believe BKU has to land an impact DT. Should be very interesting in the final month of recruiting for USC DL recruiting.

    • Good to see USC is in the position to recruit projects again and not focus just on the needs of today. But 1 or 2 top DTs are also needed so hopeful BKU can come through.

    • You know I saw a list of the Pro Bowl picks.I can’t say if it is accurate.35 of them were 3* in HS…Lang is a project, he even 2 yrs from now be playing OT…However both DT and OT is where we need projects..Good pick up.Great frame to add weight.Buddy the coaches are all over our OT , DT and corner needs..It’s a waiting game to see how we close. Thank The Team and Coaches we have ROSE BOWL.Otherwise Feb 4 would be light years away…

      • BKU has been all over this kid since last signing day. I’m sure he has big plans for him. I don’t see him playing any time soon but i think he will benefit from the extra time of getting football preparation with BKU and Pendergast.

  2. Once again, Mr. Wolf’s logic escapes me. In earlier posts, he has noted that the recruiting services are notoriously unreliable in their evaluation or prediction of talent. Darnold was only a four-star, yet clearly is one of the best players in college football. I would presume that the coaches aren’t counting the stars some non-coaches give, but doing their own evaluation of talent. There may be five stars that the coaches don’t believe will turn into great talents, and two stars who may have incredibly bright futures. Sounds to me like we got a good commitment here.

  3. Glad to see us recruiting needs and not just 4 and 5 stars. Personally, I was sick of seeing 4 and 5 stars show up just to transfer or not live up to the billing. Glad for this deserving young man as well

  4. The most important question for a dt is, does he get the first hit on the oline man or does he get hit first. If he hits them first, then the oline man gets pushed back and visa versa. The hit will come from quick feet and getting off the ball when he ball is snapped. If he gets up to 280 he will play inside, if only up to 260 lbs, then outside.

  5. Don’t get caught up in that nonsense about lower divisions at the high school level, because the guy has a physical frame, and he’s played football. He will get most of his teaching from the college coaches, which is probably a good thing . And btw, how many four and five star players get buried on the depth chart?

  6. I think most everyone is waiting to see how many linemen Helton recruits in this class. He can’t ignore the fact the depth on both sides is a real concern. Not sure Udeze has a good enough reputation to go get the needed players outside California.
