USC Morning Buzz: It’s Time For The Friday Notes Column

Halfback O.J. Simpson (32) of USC, breaks sharply to the right, beating linebacker Mike Ballou (57) as he runs 64 yards for a touchdown that beat UCLA 21-20, on Nov. 18, 1967. (AP Photo)

I’ve compiled a list of some of USC’s most iconic plays in today’s notes column. I also mention who the first TV sideline reporter was for the Rose Bowl. It might surprise you. And here’s a question: Will the USC drum major stab his sword on the Rose Bowl field on Jan. 2 after UCLA banned the act in 2012?

    • I don’t see why he would leave LA to work in the sticks for a lateral hire. Not to mention, when Oregon land recruits, credit always goes to Nike/Phil Knight. Oregon may have new money, but you guys have old money and that’s a bidding war the Ducks can’t win.

      • Tee Martin could have a number of reasons to want to get out of L.A. Who cares? If he leaves, he’ll be replaced easily. USC is the learn-on-the-job football capital of the world. It’s not that tough to call plays when you have the offensive firepower USC has.

        • Happy Holidays Jack. No one is irreplaceable, but I would like to keep the bulk of the staff & particularly the coordinators in place for at least one more season. After all the drama and turmoil of the last few years stability is sorely needed. If Tee were to leave I would suspect that Tyson Helton would slide into the OC spot. Tee’s recruiting prowess may be harder to replace however.

          • Happy holidays to you too.

For all we know, Tyson Helton will be a better OC and maybe Martin senses a ceiling at USC he doesn’t like.

USC is successful again. People will want our coaches and it just comes with the territory. Good problem to have.

Now it’s Helton’s job to win the battle for keeping recruiters who can coach at USC. This is what led to Pete’s downturn at USC. He stopped doing that and lost focus.

Helton’s far away from Pete’s success so I think he’ll avoid the complacency trap for now and under a powerful dose of Swann leadership, do just fine. But it’s still much too early to know if CH really has what it takes.

          • Agree about CH. Signs are encouraging, but sample size is still quite small. Does he have staying power?–time will tell. Unless there is something out there that I don’t know about (highly probable), I don’t think Tee is looking to go somewhere just to go. Moving up or getting a more high profile gig makes sense. But I don’t see him leaving SC for a lateral–and Oregon is less than a lateral.

          • So much of this stuff is all about relationships. Do Taggart and Martin have a connection going way back? Have they always wanted to work together?

Taggart swiped away the CU DC in a New York minute. He’s obviously very aggressive.

          • Good point. I live in Oregon and right now the fans & media think Taggart is a home run hire. Listening to players on the talk shows you can tell they are fired up. He is hitting all the right notes. He just might be one of the those guys who will do a lot more with the same talent than the guy he replaced. Just like Harbaugh replacing Hoke–and ironically Taggart is a Harbaugh guy.

          • Oregonians will convince themselves that everything is great until it isn’t and then they turn faster than any fan base in the country

          • Still I don’t see Martin leaving to go to Oregon with what he has going on next season. If it was a HC job, maybe, but he isn’t ready for that yet.

  1. As for stabbing the field at the rose bowl I say he should. The band does this wherever they go. It’s tradition not posturing. Besides the Bruins have nothing to say about this game…or any other bowl game for that matter.
Stab away Trojans and fight on.

    • My question is what is UCLA going to do?
The city of Pasadena owns the Rose Bowl and indirectly owned by USC. 🙂

  2. little gutties have nothing to do with the Rose Bowl. It’s just a pipe dream for the bruins and what do they care we do to their field which they are banned from in January. Stab On!

  3. Did you include the iconic pass back from Mike Williams to Matt Leinart in the Rose Bowl? The victory in the iconic Rose Bowl gave USC the AP NC and #1 ranking in the Coaches poll.

  4. Who cares what ugly thinks. They don’t matter. They are non existent in football. Stab the field

  5. Anyone else pick up on the fact that stabbing was mentioned on a post with a picture of OJ? Clever Blogger…………

  6. “Will the USC drum major stab his sword on the Rose Bowl field on Jan. 2” ?

    Man I hope so !

Nothing against the Bruins, but We Trojans don’t like being told what to do !!

Besides it was (Is) our Rose Bowl long before any UCLA thing !

So not only drive the Sword (Stake) into center field, but twist it a couple of times for Old-Times sake !!!

Then whoop the Nittany Kittens back to the East Coast where they belong !!!!!

Go “back” East young Man (Men), go East, the “West” is Our Land, and that was settled long ago !

    FightOn
