About That Rose Bowl Field

Whatever team you rooted for, what happened to the Rose Bowl field that there was so much slipping? It’s their big game of the year. Shouldn’t they be prepared for pre-game rain? Sam Darnold nearly fell down on that 2-point conversion. If he had, the field really would have been a post-game topic.

  1. Remember when the Blogger ridiculed the decision to add blueshirts Matt Boermeester and Deontay Burnett in 2014? How about his “he’s only a 3-star recruit” reference to Sam Darnold?

Who were the stars of the Rose Bowl Mr. Blogger?

    • Remember when the Dr. Rachel Maddow of Inside USC predicted Bryce Dixon would return to the team?

How many tackles did Bryce have last night, Dr. Maddow?

  2. I have helped paint the Rose Bowl field in preparation for the Jan.1st Grand Daddy of them all. Scotty, you have to realize that the stadium sits in a big gully and moisture is always there during the winter months due to fog, rain, dampness in the air. Usually they fly a helicopter a few feet on the field to dry the field out the day before the game. Maybe this time they did. However, if you you did not notice, walking to the game yesterday I had to stomp through mud and a wet grass going through the parking lot. The field is the same as the parking area. There is nothing they can do, unless they tarp the field. That is part of the game Scotty. There could have been torn knees from cleats sticking and both teams are lucky that did not happen. That is what happened to Adoree’s ankle, his cleats got caught in the mud. This problem has been going on before you were born Scotty. What can we do about it?

  3. Wolf, again, it is plainly obvious that you do absolutely no investigating with your posts. Here is the deal with the Rose Bowl Turf. First, rain had nothing to do with players slipping yesterday. If you caught College Game Day you would’ve noticed that the field was covered and the field crew was blowing air underneath the tarp to dry out any moisture. Second, the new turf that was installed is from West Coast Turf in Palm Desert and is a mix of Bermuda Grass overseeded with Rhye/Blue Grass. Rhye/Blue stays green all year long and it is somewhat slippery. Third, after installation the turf was more than likely rolled a number of times and this is probably the reason why there was so much slippage. This same process was used when Oregon played Auburn in the NC Title game in Phoenix and there was a lot of slippage in that game as well.

    • Too bad SW didn’t interview someone like you or PT above, or the Rose Bowl to find out when the turf was put in. Everybody knows grass doesn’t grow much this time of year. Looks good for the opening camera shot but the roots have not dug in. Who knows how many points would have been scored with solid footing.

    • Then West Coast Turf should be fired. The field was an ice rink and we were very fortunate Adoree wasn’t severely injured by that crap turf they installed. The Coliseum turf that Rams played on January 1st isn’t like that.

      • I hear you Marv…but from what I know West Coast installed the turf at the Colosseum as well.

  4. The field and the refs were the only two things that didn’t live up to the moment. Keith Jackson wasn’t great either.

  5. Rose Bowl resod 5 days after USC-UCLA game.
Coli resod 5 days after RB resod (after ND)

    Rose Bowl is sand based
    Coli is soil base

No slippage in SC-ND, Ram’s v 49ers or Cardinals. ND in 1st half rain. 49ers following 1.18″ rain overnight and tarped till 0630 on game day. Cardinals game tarps came of @ 0730 01/01… a day before Rose Bowl Game…

    Coli overseeded with PureSeed rye
    Rose Bowl overseeded with bluegrass

    Rose Bowl’s priority is presentation
Coli is an NFL stadium. Their priority is playability.

But, we all know Scottie has been little turf knowledge. When is buddy was rolling his little castor wheel suitcase across the south sideline hash marks, he was asked to roll that thing off the grid. Scott thought it as to give the Ram’s a better playing surface….No buddy, grass seeds find those burrow lines and creates an unsightly row of grass.
